The Sydney-based New Zealander, who survived throat cancer with a hole in his throat which makes any ocean racing life-threatening, says he will return the yacht to Clark after the race and expects it to be then taken overseas for sale. However there is rumoured interest from another Sydney businessman and Sydney to Hobart enthusiast who could well buy the boat and race it south himself next year under an Australian flag. “Jim is lending me the boat and I will pick up the bills,” said of Comanche, which took line honours in the 2015 Sydney to Hobart with former supermodel Hinze-Clark aboard. What happens after the race, it will probably leave the county and be sold. But that’s all still up in the air.”

You'll see many similarities between the conceptual drawings and the actual boat. But the discerning eye will notice that the boat is immersed in water and features a mast and some sails, whereas the conceptual drawing shows no wetted surface and features four jet engines. Apparently Reynolds numbers and bypass ratios matter. Who knew?

SCANAS 523 #581 Posted October 30, 2017 https://spark.adobe.com/page/cBRjjcxw6TY0g/ Be interesting to see if they go for a nose job / finer entry. At this stage they said they are aiming to own the lighter wind range & results from Hammo certainly proved that. Could be a smart move. WOXI modded to bride the gap with Comanche so left the door open at the other end. If it's light for 3-4hours that could easily be enough to put BJ too far in front for WOXI or COMANCHE to mow back down. Should be the closest one for a while. pulpit 192 #582 Posted October 30, 2017 1 hour ago, DtM said: How much has been done to Alfa/Esmit/BlackJack ? Last time I spoke to the boys on BJ the mods haven’t been that great. Single Dagger board forward lifting rudder and sail area changes. The boys told me that if they play with the keel or fin they will lose the tungsten bulb that is grandfathered. 10 ton almost half the size of a 10 ton lead bulb. So the boat is is still almost as designed. What other changes could they do ? The mast is about 3-4 m shorted than Oats. BJ owns 12 knots and under why go taller mast. They Could cut and shut the boat to increase the down wind performance, should of bought the Indian for the money it would cost to do that. So what have the boys got left to do ? Longer bowsprit, bigger kites and maybe DSS. BJ is still one of the best all round boats that is still very close to her original design and still sails to her rating. pulpit

They have a boat that will be most likely the fastest in the fleet in the 5-12 knot range. It's pointless trying to compete with Oats and Comanche in the higher wind range given the mods Oats has done to be stronger which was driven by Comanche's strengths. Given the tungsten scenario and they also went to RP for any ideas they now know where there at. I think this makes sense for them. They will be sailed very well too and if Comanche and Oats get caught out 2 boat racing they could slip through somewhere given the opportunity.
Car Ramrod 10 #584 Posted October 31, 2017 Don't forget breakages in the the top end of the fleet. Plus if it's a big boat year, they could be closer for the overall by virtue of sailing to a better handicap.

It tends to be either 25+ on the nose, 25+ up the bum, with something weak (think SE/E) in the transitions. Those transitions are where you can make the break from the competition. Light and skinny also tends to win on VMG downwind unless its really honking or from a favourable direction. That, and the inevitable lottery across Storm Bay and up the river. That's 30nm of potential nothing.

LB 15 4,884 #588 Posted November 1, 2017 Not in the customs house it isn't. 40 - 50 would be closer.

BJ is still one of the best all round boats that is still very close to her original design and still sails to her rating. pulpit Tungsten bulb half the size at the same weight as lead...? Me thinks not...
SCANAS 523 #590 Posted November 1, 2017 Google says: Lead 11.3g/cm3 Tungsten 19.4g/cm3 Is WOXI's mast really 3-4m longer than BJ?

While Tungsten is seriously heavy stuff, in practice the density is a bit less. Tungsten is hard stuff to work with and can't be cast easily (melts at 3422 degrees celsius) is, so as I understand it "tungsten" bulbs are ususally made of tungsten ingots cast into a lead bulb. And - see below, tungsten ingots aren't pure tungsten in any case. Wikipedia to the rescue: "Tungsten is extracted from its ores in several stages. The ore is eventually converted to tungsten(VI) oxide (WO3), which is heated with hydrogen or carbon to produce powdered tungsten.[31] Because of tungsten's high melting point, it is not commercially feasible to cast tungsten ingots. Instead, powdered tungsten is mixed with small amounts of powdered nickel or other metals, and sintered. During the sintering process, the nickel diffuses into the tungsten, producing an alloy." SCANAS 523 #592 Posted November 2, 2017 So less than half as dense & can't be cast so we're talking 10-20% less drag (sorry surface area) over the bulb area?
