Figment 42
Serge, you're pissing in 25yr old cornflakes there. To assert that Jeep's (or any carmaker's) product from 25 or even 10 years ago is an indication of their current product is nonsense. They've all done quality and they've all done crap at one time or another, each model must be evaluated on its own merits. Furthermore, if you bought a cherokee for the mileage or the interior space, or the quiet highway ride you plainly bought the wrong car. The "falling apart before I was off the lot at the dealer" was also a well known trait in that era. If you didn't know what you were buying it was because you didn't want to know. I dunno if I dig that 2018 wrangler redesign. I do know that I'd buy my 06 LJ back in a heartbeat. I should've sold the boat and kept that car.

That man is a damned genius with bringing old engines back to life. He gave me the step-by-step plan for getting my old 1975 Fiat Spider running again, I haven't started it since 1990, so many things that I would have missed, he's like a Amadeus Mozart of old engines.

wristwister 81
There really is a lot to the statement "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand." Yes, they're underpowered, they handle like bricks, overpriced, uncomfortable, boxy, unreliable ... just about every negative attribute that can be applied to a car applies to Jeeps, particularly older ones. But ... I love 'em. Built up several Wranglers and Cherokees and thoroughly abused them. The aftermarket parts available and things you can do to them are just plain fun. And for some reason, used ones are so overpriced that they tend to be worth putting the time and money into.

The good news is that means I am no longer bound by the NDA. We put about 60,000 combined miles on JLs over the last 18 months. All of ours had the 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder (GMET4). The biggest recurring issue we had was the start/stop system kept frying the starter motors. We probably went through 10 starters over the course of our testing. Our vehicles were early prototypes (VP-A) so maybe they have sorted out the issue by now. I am hoping to drive a release version this week or next MS

If that filter clogs, he'll be out $3K. Best to do what it says. I'll never buy a modern diesel. Too much complexity.

However, he also told me that they found a new breakfast joint up the coast one day when the car said, "Please continue driving the vehicle" because it was doing something and was not supposed to stop during the process. Maybe he was just fucking with me... any word on what killed the fucker? we got the 2014 diesel GC when it came out. at 1k miles, the high pressure fuel pump imploded, i guess bosch ended up re-designing it. we've now gone 46k without any issues. But just yesterday the thing started flashing all these warnings, telling me that i needed to drive at highway speeds as soon as possible due to some exhaust filter shit??! i didnt get to the highway in time and now it says that it needs to be serviced, the exhaust filter is 100% full. strange. needed to bring it back to the dealer anyway because the dumb fucks at kendall jeep didnt reset the oil change meter (i dont think it can be reset manually...). are there any decent jeep dealers in south florida? we have the prepaid oil changes, and the truck is still under warranty... austin1972 629
You can reset the oil change through you MFD. Your DPF is stuffed. I hope they can clean it.

austin1972 629
It's in limp mode. It won't clean itself. Have them check your turbo while it's in. It's variable vane and they can get f'ed in that situation.

Cape_taco12 7
anyone have a new JL 4 door? Getting tired of waiting for the truck. May end up going with the 4door and landscaping trailer. My boat (J80) is basically right on the towing capacity with trailer not that I plan on towing much farther than the .5miles to my house. A weight distributing hitch will probably solve any issues if it have to hit the highway.
SloopJonB 12,545
It ain't the weight distribution that determines tow limits, it's the transmission and diff life. Don't tow past the stated limits much or at all or you will be formally introduced to Big Bill.

I should've sold the boat and kept that car. i agree that it's not necessarily an indication of build quality, but it's 100% an indication of design quality, or the lack of it. Vehicles are almost never redesigned from the tires up with the passing years and models. They are a continuum. The crappy design decision that someone made in the way a strut is fitted and compressed for example, may have been okay when the vehicle had a straight six in it, and lots of steel in the frame, but it's not necessarily the right design choice when the vehicle has a V8 with a lot of plastic and impact foam. But these design decisions often move from year to year like bloody hijackers, because it's often way too expensive to redesign a key part, due to the ripple of parts and service methods that will be impacted by it ... move the connection point to that strut the three inches forward where it needs to be to prevent torquing the drivetrain in body flex, and suddenly you have to move some other connections, change some other design specs for safety, then go back to the safety testing, back to consumer research to find out how the new body shape (which might have to accommodate the different connection) then plays with the customers. So they just leave things alone often times unless there is a pressing need to change things. In general, it's much easier to bolt new stuff onto a vehicle than to move old stuff around. These engines don't just have to move the vehicle, they have to be amenable to profitable service schedules, they have to be reasonably workable that the service techs can figure them out, that they use materials that don't risk supply interruptions. When you change one thing, you often then have to change a hundred things, so things tend to persist, they tend to be left alone. And we then look at this drivetrain of 2018 and convince ourselves that it's wildly different from the drivetrain of 1998, but once you take off the plastic covers, and computer controls and sensing for things like timing and variable cylinder, and other advanced safety and performance enhancements, you often are left with a lot more like the original vehicle, than different. I learned long ago at my old marina in Kingston, NY, that a manual transmission with even a weak frame and a weak engine, can move an astonishing amount of mass with minimal failure. The kid at the Hideaway used to use a little Geo Tracker with a ball mount on the front (for convenience) and a wheezy little 1.6 liter four-banger engine to move around every boat in that yard, regardless of weight. It's the automatic transmissions, that need the cooling, the parts hardening and the extra thermal mass.

I picked the Brain of Cal BAR technicians asking and learning the subtleties of the emission/parts/ computer relationship (my computer was fine) Mopar is a picky bastard only happy w OEM parts ... but that includeS Denzo/NGK as the manufacturer of a bunch of MOPAR OEM But ya youall just buy new vehicles and have shop do whatever Mine Blew through Smog yesterday and I shall pick up my plates on Monday @ AAA

I have been trying to figure out where in the food chain the Commander actually is. It's roomier than a Grand by far. It's Trail rated because it came with the little thingie that says so At the Frisco AC in 2013 I slept in back of the QX4 this is WHEY ROOMIER and gets Much better mileage... not as Luxurious (leather etc) and no sunroof All Up Running like New with Fresh OEM Emissions Everything that talks to the computer I'm in it about $4K even ....about what you put down to lease a new one whete EVERYTHING Costs MORE
