Bill Weld Taking On Donald Trump for 2020

I don't believe he has any chance.

I listened to him on Bill Mahar last night - blegh.  Probably a nice guy but boring political pablum.  There's no incentive for any republican to really go against Trump at this point.  You can't 'out-right' him so you'd be going to the middle but for that demographic to make sense, you'd also have to carve into a significant number of right leaning democrats and that seems to be a TALL order right now.

I’ll give him an A for effort. But anyone who hitched his wagon to Gary Johnson just can't be right in the head.

One of the very few times I agree with you on politics. Maybe the only time.

OTOH if the choice was between Trump and Weld, you'd have to be a pretty fucked-up person to choose Trump

Repubs will have an easy win.

So you are saying, that after all this, Republican voters have learned nothing since 2016? Simply owning libs and the urban elite at the expense of everything else?

I dunno, there are probably a few mammals that would be worse picks than Trump...... I can't think of any, off the top of my head, but there may be such a one.............. OTOH I think it was unfair of you to rule out lizards

Republican voters have learned nothing since 2016. Simply owning libs and the urban elite at the expense of everything else.

I posted this in the Boris Johnson thread. Jeff was yammering on about populism, that you all who do nothing but discount this as a case of the deplorables and racists just getting uppity are ignoring, at your own peril, the greater, much more deep-seated roots of discontent.

You'll admit that the Kenyan left the country in much better shape than it was handed to him in (country sinking vs country making headway upwind, OBL living with his three wives vs OBL sinking) yet for some reason the deplorables and racists seem to have been pretty unhappy about that. It's a conundrum. So I guess I'm not following you, of course at my own peril.

 Indeed Shitstain's antics have been embarrassing for the country but then his governance has been equally bad. Caligula was going to make his horse a consul which has set the low bar historically. But one of Shitstain's 4 failed Federal Reserve nominations said, 'I'm not an expert on monetary policy'. Is the Federal Reserve Board a good place to learn on the job?

 Maybe y'all's populism is the actual problem. That is one of the things the Founders worried about. Instead y'all want things to be worse because at least that screws over those damned elites.

I was pretty OK with my conservative friends before Shitstain. But they need to grow the fuck up. This is on them

That's the problem.  They don't think anything is wrong.

Or like that lady who only watches conservative news...  Who knew?

If knowledge is power, these people are pretty powerless.

As far as Weld is concerned, national Republicans will hate him. First, he's running against Shitstain. Done and done. But if you recall, Bill Clinton nominated Weld to be Ambassador to Mexico. He'd have been a fine choice. Then a sitting governor, he's fluent in Spanish (as well as Latin, Greek and French), former US Attorney. Serious guy. But Jesse Helms hated the fact that Clinton would nominate a Republican moderate on  gay rights, abortion rights, and medical marijuana. There was some other intramural nonsense having to do with Ed Meese but his nomination died without a vote.

The only way there will be a GOP win is if Trump can stave off the investigations while playing the victim card and doesn't manage to tank the economy. This coupled with somehow the Ds manage to nominate someone not mainstream enough to capture the middle while alienating enough Ds to stay home.

That is sort of like betting on that 13th horse that limps into the starting gate at the Kentucky Derby.  Could happen but I am and have been willing to bet against it. That bet is still open for any who are interested.

Shitstain doesn't need (or want) a majority. He has to turn out his voters and depress independents. That was what the endless Benghazi nonsense was about in 2016. I don't think it's a strategy for re-election.

Weld = founding Pilgrim family,

Trump = nouveau riche

Of course Trump will win- he’s the scrappy kid who made it from the streets of Brooklyn...... his backers have the pitchforks and tiki torches at the ready to take down the aristocracy and cleanse the country of the stench of the indolent established upper classes!

is Trump Lenin?  Or Robespierre?

Interesting to ponder what the Republican party will look like after Trump.

Except they look too young to be Republicans.

Bill Maher had a piece where he said Trump uses playground rules so the Ds need to take him on there.  One suggestion Maher made was for Warren to call Trump "Brokeahontas" in reference to Trump losing more money than anyone in America.

If the Ds focused on Trump's nouveau riche status and pointed to his loser history - casino failures, unpaid debts, bilking contractors, hiding behind lawyers - the Ds might break him.  Imagine the D candidate getting the crowd to chant "Loser, loser, loser."  Trump would crumble.  And if his base saw that, they would abandon him.  They need the strongman.  But then, who would be the best at playing by schoolyard rules?

These f-ing people are not conservative. That implies some form of principle behind their choices.

Oh, they have principles all right. Their principles are that they have a powerful bitter hatred inside them, because their mommies didn't love them (and who can blame poor ol' Mom). They are stupid and they want to inflict the pain of their stupidity on the people around them whom they blame. They envy the rich and worship the idea of wealth.... so of course, they think you goddam libby-rulls ENVY the rich (because who doesn't) but they hate that you don't obey their religion.

Among other things
