VR Transat Jacques Vabre

Recommended Posts

I have to admit to being slightly fed up of travelling around the world at 4kts with a 65° tacking angle on the Magellan.  So I am looking forward to doing a high speed dash down the Atlantic.  I am going on an IMOCA 60.  Is anyone else coming out to play?

EDIT - I'm going with the full package.

I have decided not to race virtual sailing games anymore, too much of my time was wasted playing them. Unless I sat on the computer constantly, all I found was I got stuck in a position range and never seemed to improve.

That said, I hope you enjoy the VR  TJV. RS

what are they doing for polars in the game?

is there anything that is supposed to be for the new 60's?

If you go to zezo.org, and open the TJV IMOCA, there is a tab at the top of the page for the Polars.  I have no idea whether these are changed from last time the VR ran an IMOCA race.

Thanks for that, I’ll take a look at the polars.
Not that it’ll make much difference, got to actually point it in the right direction for starters. :P

Could someone racing the VR version of the TJV give us an update on how the different routes boats have taken have panned out please. We all know that in the real race the eastern traditional course has the race lead, and the western route appears to have failed. Of cause as there are 1000s more boats in the VR and there are many more possible routes to try.

Hello,

Here is a rough schedule of placings, the top placed boats went about three-quarters right, some that went hard right are now a LOOONG way behind.  The boats by N Africa have got a lot of westing to make up.

Let me know if you are playing, but I have not included you - you need to tell me your boat name.

Rank SA Name Boat Name 02:30 UTC 01/11/19
1 Gufmiester Big Balls 4.54
2 Magool Magool 9.02
3 Tunnel Rat Mongrel 31.5
4 rolltak awkwardturtle 64.7
5 kea.nn kea.nn SA 73.1
6 Marty6 Cambodunum 88.7
7 mad Sticky 261.7
8 Vin Divided Sky 535.9

I was interested if one route had prevailed. RS

Hard to tell as I am only following a couple of boats in the east, but it does look like in the VR IMOCA 60's the east group are a few hours in front  right now.

Routing wise from what I can tell. . .
The eastern group has temporarily taken the lead by a thin margin but are still routing about 6 hours slow of the previously leading pack that went west...obviously a reset to still be had at the doldrums...additionally the eastern group will be forced to extend west sometime soon and give up some leverage with a light patch standing in their way that is extending off of Africa.
There are a few that tried to go far west and got hosed but right now I think it will come down to how quickly the mid/west group can cross the ridge and escape the edge of the mid-Atlantic high. I am with this group (sailing as "PGB") and based on routing would expect to see gybes from the Western bit of this gang in 1.5 - 3 hours with the eastern guys in the pack hanging on for 2.5-4.5 more hours before the gybe.

Plenty to play for but has been a complex escape from what initialy looked like a strong western routing. . .especially considering these VR boats don't care about pounding sea state.

Hello,

Here are the rankings.  I seem to have gained a bit from better pressure to the east of the main group of SAers.  Fast_Cubed is 45Nm ahead of second place - very unusual to have such a big lead in such a competitive race, it will be interesting to see if he can hold on to it.

I am concerned about Awkward Turtle loitering out to the west.  He is not too far behind and has quite a bit of leverage.

All to play for....

Rank SA Name Boat Name 00:30 UTC 04/11/19
1 Tunnel Rat Mongrel 176.1

9 Vin Divided Sky 388.5

505.2

On a separate topic, I rather bizarrely ran aground in the Magellan race on Balicasag Island off Bohol.  It is the island where my then girlfriend, now wife, did her first open water dive in 1998.  Last time we were in Bohol in 2007, the kids were playing on Balicasag beach while we took turns diving.  The schooling jacks are incredible.  Beautiful place.

Mini transat is working out better this time though.
