Just a few questions about race management....

Recommended Posts

There are a lot of race management software packages and services out there to pick from, so I am just conducting a  little survey to see what the scoop is!

For all the event managers out there...

  1. What are you using now for race management and scoring now?
  2. What do you like about your current tool (features, usability, cost, etc...)?
  3. What do you dislike about your current tool?
  4. Last but not least, if that tool only did (insert here), that would make our lives so much easier.

For most of the racers out there, we are largely using these tools to register for events, look up scratch sheets, notifications, and results.

With that being said...

  1. What do you like/dislike about the programs out there?
  2. What do you think is missing from the programs out there?

All this leads to one last final thought, especially regarding handicapping and our good ol PHRF. Now days with all the technology we have,  it seems we could really put a polish on everyone's favorite rating system that was data driven instead of committee driven. With the rise of complex rating systems that make us do more than basic math in our heads, I'm curious to hear thoughts on how we could use data to make the simplicity of PHRF more polished.

Opens a bag of chips and a beer and gets ready to watch the shit fly...

Just switch to IRC. Problem solved.

You’re welcome.

That’s why IRC registrations are at an all-time high. That’s why no one is buying any new boats designed to the rule, because it is so absolutely infallible in rating older designs.  It is especially great because one rating is set worldwide, despite conditions in some places that favor some boats over others. How a boat performs in the Solent applies worldwide, so if you don’t get 15-20 knot winds on a regular basis you can move to a place that does, and race there instead.  It is really precise, too. IIRC the rating goes out to THREE decimal places.  Hard to argue with that. Hard to argue with a governing body on the other side of the ocean too.  It must deal with CCA-style boats particularly well.  That’s why all of them refuse to enter PHRF events.

IRC may work for recent designs, but the majority of boats racing are not recent. The OP’s suggestion is well taken. Creating a database of all race finishes for every design in a set area and re-examining the PHRF ratings would be a good idea. It might not change things much.  People grouse, but PHRF racing  continues to be popular.

We use Sailwave at our club. It doesn’t provide all the bells & whistles of other more commercial sites; the RC has to enter the info and set things up.  On a local level, that seems to work.
