Here in the Carolina's, for some reason they keep track of the transient boats as they pass by. I don't think it's a law, more of a policy. Maybe to justify funding? If the vessel name and hailing port aren't readily visible, they'll call on the VHF sometimes to get it from you. That was my guess as to what was happening there.

Granted, a buck-o-three per vid probably doesn't cover the time spent on editing, not at any decent hourly wage, but intended or not they are building an audience on YT to send over to their patronage page, and getting lots of exposure at sites like this one with their , erm, "boating adventure". You have to be at close to 1 million videws per vid to actualy get paid in the sense of "self sustaioning" You don't eben qualify for a single cent until you pass a subscrier threshold (tesms of thousands I think now). Then after that you can put adverts on the videos, and you get roughly 1000e per 1 million views (based on my experience). But apparently the revenue is based on what sort of adverts, for example if you are making videos about buying houses there is a good chance your audience want to buy a house... So the ROI for a company advertising on these videos is higher, and they pay more to have adverts on these vids. Some weird guy refitting a shit boat in the south of Ireland... his audience are probably buying boat stuff which won't have the same ROI, so he makes sweet, sweet fuck all off ad revenue. Will their ipad navionics be of use in open water though with no visible landmarks and no directional references? They've already almost sailed out of sight of land accidentally. Will their ipad navionics be of use in open water though with no visible landmarks and no directional references? I'm just thinking if they succeed in making this trip down the ditch it might embolden them to try an offshore trip similarly ill equipped. That wouldn't be a good thing. While i would love to see them try to cross the gulfstream in that boat, the first proper roller would send them right back in.

I've tried sailing using the compass function on a small tablet, it sucks. You'd be better off with a map and going from GPS waypoint to GPS waypoint. Correct, but it is important to have the right sensors. I think they are gravity, gyro and compass, and most newer phones have the lot. Cheap tablets not so much. I was pleasantly surprised how well the compass app functions, much better than the old fashioned fluxgate compasses.

Squeaky and gomer could use one to get to Florida. Either one.

I thought someone with your experience would know this! Have you not been paying attention? Bond, bondo - hmmm, do I use Bondo...... I can't be bothered watching this pair, it's all a bit painful really. But I give them credit for trying. And as long as they learn & improve it's all good. Reminds me of the GF of a friend of mine - she was a fully qualified architect. They bought a block of land & started to build a tiny house to live in. Not a single clue about actual construction - she thought that if you wanted a 240 grit finish, you started with 240 grit paper and persevered. Plus buying paint, rollers and not knowing she needed a roller tray. I gave them a lot of help and advice. But they both learned, built a cosy & functional place and were happy in it while planning the 'true' house. So there's hope for this pair. If they're willing to learn. I mean, once they reach Florida alive the interest in this channel is going to drop off a cliff. They will need to start preparing for the next big adventure or (gasp) get JOBS!

Steam Flyer 8,439
For the record, I did not see anybody I know in that video.... kind of skimmed it. Both of the boats at the free town dock are centerboard boats, the depth there is about 4 1/2 ft IIRC The spot they tied up along the wall is about 2 ft or less, and I don't think there's cleats. The town probably takes a dim view of dimwits tying up to the handrail. There is also a pretty strict time limit, Oriental has had to deal with boat-dwelling freeloaders and outright thieves many times over the years. Not that this pair is all the way down in that category FB- Doug

Why do you need a compass when you're 'sailing' down a CANAL??? I haven't installed the compass on my boat and I just got back from a nice little 4 day jaunt down the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. The chartplotter works, I have the tablet if it dies and if that fails then the Mk 1 eyeball still works. Sorta. FKT
