The Hollywood sailing flicks will make you jump out the window! (but for a few exceptions)...

Check out the oldie but goodie "Riddle of the sands" on youtube for example...

Also - check this thread out... It will surely keep you entertained fora few days!

Do not miss my recommendation for the vid :"S/v Pestilence"

Enjoy!

Masquerade from the 80s.

Rob Lowe sporting a red shell jacket is still my prototypical big boat sailor image.

It's a pretty good little thriller, save for the LGBT-demonizing twist ending. Oops.

Oh, and Kim Cattrall topless! Woo hoo!

Yes, what a moron!  Didn't he stop bailing out his boat to take a nap?  I was yelling at my TV the whole way through

You made it all the way through. We gave up after about 30 minutes.

Deep Water (2006)

The movie is available free on YouTube, but omits the extra interviews:

The Weekend Sailor

With Jean-du-Sud Around the World

I bought the Jean-Du-Sud movie and enjoyed it every minute. You just need to look it either alone or with fellow sailors. For everybody else it is most disturbing.

Not a sailing movie per se but Master and Commander, a good tale, has the most realistic looking ocean shots.

Aubrey–Maturin series

Aubrey-Maturin series
Author Patrick O'Brian
Country Great Britain
Language English
Genre Literary fiction, Nautical fiction, Historical fiction
Published 1969–2004

The Aubrey–Maturin series is a sequence of nautical historical novels—20 completed and one unfinished—by Patrick O'Brian, set during the Napoleonic Wars and centering on the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey of the Royal Navy and his ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin, a physician, natural philosopher, and intelligence agent. The first novel, Master and Commander, was published in 1969 and the last finished novel in 1999.[1] The 21st novel of the series, left unfinished at O'Brian's death in 2000, appeared in print in late 2004.

I like to read from various genres and never read two books in a row from the same genre.  So, it took me a few years, but I read the entire Aubrey-Maturin series and enjoyed it immensely.  In fact, it was long enough ago that I might start over and do it again.  Turn the TV off and read a book (or a kindle).

Nobody mentioned "Hot Yachts Cold Water" by Warren Miller yet?  was up on youtube for a while.

The St Francis Laser Slalom and dropping the Hobie 33 bring back memories with great narration from WM

Worst Sailing movie was All is Lost!

We saw it at a downtown Seattle movie theatre.  When we went in, we didn’t know if there were any other sailors in the audience.  But then about 3/4 of the audience discovered the lack of an EPIRB at the same moment, and started yelling at the screen.  It went downhill from there......people were throwing popcorn at the screen, yelling and laughing.  At one point a couple of the theatre crew came in to see what was going on, but we found our out later they couldn’t  figure it out and left.  A bunch of us wound up at a bar across the street and the best we could come up with was he was an alcoholic who never had sailed before.

Not the best sailing movie, but the scene in Pirates of the Caribbean where the Black Pearl decides to fight Barbarossa and drops their anchor to spin the boat and bring their guns to bear,  great trick, I wonder if it was ever actually used in battle?

‘Battleship’ did that- pretty cool.  No sailboats, but good water and boats action.

Would ‘African Queen’ couldn’t.   More motor boat stuff.

Roy Disney should be embarrassed. That was the worst piece of modern sailing BS I have ever seen.

Nobody has mentioned Dead Calm

Nicole Kidman gets her gear off and Billy Zane gets a flare between his teeth. Stormvogal is a nice boat as well

The first owner, the one who commissioned the boat, was Cornelius Bruynzeel, inventor of marine-grade plywood.

It was ~10 minute segments shown on I think Mickey Mouse Club or a show like that. I saw it in the late 60's but at that time it kinda looked like it might have been from the 50s, maybe early 60s.

I don't know if its true or not but I heard one of the last things Ted Kennedy did when he was dying was get out of bed and go sail the Wednesday night beer can race.  Its always fun to hear a love of sailing story.

Captains Courageous is pretty good - some great shots of the old schooners.

But then there was the laughably inept Portuguese accent by Spencer Tracy - worst thing he ever did.

Many of the Howards’ Way episodes are available on YouTube. Yes it is a soap opera but it was firmly based on yachting: much more interesting than Dallas, Dynasty, etc.

Perhaps especially relevant now, given that many people will be facing layoffs and will need to reinvent themselves. :(

Not quite a movie, but the Irish language channel TG4 has a beautiful television series online following the 2019 racing season of the Báid Mhóra, the biggest of the traditional Galway Hookers. The racing is based in the Irish speaking Connemara region of Galway, shown with subtitles. Possibly about as far from Americas Cup as you can get, this is as much about culture as sailing, but then again cultures of many kinds are a foundation of a lot of sailing.
