Sorry PB.

Man, I love Fitz. It’s killing him to be on the bench, but then he turns around and drops this:

If you missed the Ravens/Browns game, you missed a good one.

I sort of feel sorry for Andy Dalton - decent QB and now playing for another suck team. Of course he is still making bucketloads of money, but still not enough to have to answer to Jerry Jones.

Jerry Jones is a significant upgrade from Mike Brown.

Watching this on a loop is way better than one of those soothing ocean sounds things.

Unbelievable. Tua will start at Buffalo. Win and they’re in the playoffs, where if I’m not mistaken...they would open at Buffalo. Two early January wins at Buffalo?  Yeah no.

Mixed feelings. They can’t win it all this year. I’d rather they show some promise on the way to another top five pick, but I can’t pull for them to lose, try as I might.

And Fitz will be enshrined in Dolphins lore. Amazing.

LOL
The Jets are winning again while Jax is doing the sensible thing and getting blown out by the Bears.  If Jax was smart they’d trade the Lawerence pick back to the Jets for a mother load of draft picks a la Cowboys and Herschel Walker.  Jets love themselves QB saviors but can’t be bothered with building a team.

Tanju-Berry-Mud.

Goddammit. That was a somewhat disastrous and unnecessary win.

It's hard to watch your team play well when you wouldn't be upset if they lost. But where then hell does Brandon Allen come from putting up almost 400 yards in the air??

Hawks take the NFC West title. Rams D is freaking scary good. Now the Seahawks go on the road to play the 49ers at their home field......

In Arizona??????

Santa Clara County shut down all professional sports teams in their County. So the 9ers get to use the Cardinals stadium as home field. Strange days

That always happens to the top qb. He gets to start fresh with a new GM and coach/staff. They’ll pull a top assistant from a top team, like Bienamy, make him head coach and let it fly with a new team built around him.

Any chance of Houston coming to life after JJ Watts' rant on Sunday and beating the Titans?

Any chance of the Browns, Ravens or Colts losing? How many starters will the Steelers rest against the Browns? Colts gave the Jags their only win in week one in Jax, if memory serves...they won't be losing at home. Ravens aren't losing to the Bengals, no matter the Bengals' two game winning streak.

How many starters does Buffalo rest next weekend?

How Green Bay, Wisconsin Became
the Toilet Paper Capital of the World
NO CITY DEALS WITH MORE assholes on
a daily basis than Green Bay, Wisconsin

This is not a metaphorical statement:
Green Bay is the toilet paper capital of the world.

But how did Green Bay become the Keister Kingdom,
the Crapital City, the Xanadu of Doo-Doo?

It was largely thanks to a revolutionary invention
that changed bottom wiping from painful
penance to inconsequential chore,
and elevated this small mid-western city
into the number one of number twos.

Wiping itself has a long and storied history.
Chimpanzees have been observed using leaves
and twigs to wipe feces from their buttocks.
Humans have embraced a wider array
of tools for this unpleasant task.
Grass, fur, shells, stones, corncobs,
and bare hands have all been documented
in our struggles to keep up appearances.

Sometimes the choices our
ancestors made are wince-inducing;
shards of pottery were used in Roman times.
A gentler if less sanitary relief could
be found in the form of the tersorium,
a communal stick with a
vinegar-soaked sponge on its end.

(The one literary reference to the tersorium stems
from the writings of the Roman philosopher Seneca,
who describes a gladiator killing himself by
thrusting the tersorium down his throat,
blocking his windpipe and choking himself to death).

An array of pre-toilet paper implements from Japan, c. 710-784

Unsurprisingly it was the country that first
invented paper that first invented toilet paper.
In 589 AD, the Chinese scholar and government
official Yan Zhitui agonized over the correctness
of using paper that had Confucian quotations
written on it to wipe his bottom with.

Indeed as Richard Smyth reveals in
his breathtaking tome on the subject,
by the 14th Century the province of Zhejiang
dominated the toilet paper market,
providing the Imperial court in Nanjing
with special toilet sheets that were
three foot long by two feet wide.

The first mention of toilet paper in
Western literature is not favorable.
It comes in Francois Rabelais’ supremely
scatological Gargantua(1534) in which the
titular giant discusses how through
“long and curious experience”
he has “found out a means to wipe my bum.”
Having tried sheets, curtains, table-cloths, hay,
straw, wool and cats to do the deed,
Gargantua announces that by
far his worst choice was paper:
“Who his foul tail with paper wipes
Shall at his ballocks leave some chips.”

Joseph C Gayetty, the inventor of toilet paper

As it was, the sheer cost of paper made it impractical
as a wipe until the 19th century when the arrival of thick
and cheap publications such as the Sears Catalog and
the Farmer’s Almanac saw them put to double use.
The Almanac was even published with a hole in it
so it could be hung off a nail in an outhouse.
However it was in 1857 that an American
inventor named Joseph Gayetty announced
the arrival of the first purpose-made toilet paper—
“Gayetty’s Medicated Paper For the Water-Closet.”

Gayetty was a shrewd businessman.
He took aim at his greatest competitors—
the newspapers, magazines and catalogs
people were already using in their toilets—
and in the truest American tradition,
used fear to sell his wares.

“The Greatest Necessity of the Age!”
An 1859 advertisement for Gyety’s medicated paper

“Many people have wooed their own destruction,
physical and mental,
by neglecting to pay attention to ordinary matters,”
read his broadside advertisements.
He warned that printed paper contained
“Oil of Vitriol” and” Chloride of Lime”
and other “fearful poisons” and declared
that improvised toilet papers introduced
“rank poison to tender portions of the body.”

Gayetty’s medicated paper was,
by contrast, made to be “pure as snow.”
He thus declared his product
“the greatest necessity of the age!” which,
despite his abject scaremongering,
did not seem entirely hyperbolic.

A bird’s eye illustration of Green Bay, Wisconsin, c. 1867

Yet toilet paper was still a niche product,
reserved for the rich or hemorrhoidal.
It was not until the popularity of
indoor plumbing took off—
and the pages of the previously used
catalogs proved unflushable—
that the paper mills of Green Bay turned
their covetous eyes on the nation’s backsides.
Perhaps it was not surprising that Green Bay
should have achieved such coprophilic success.

After all,
the area had originally been named
'La Baie des Puants',
“The Bay of Stinkards,”
by early French explorers because of
the odiferous green algae in the water.

Whatever the case, in 1901,
Northern Paper Mills of Green Bay issued the
first “sanitary tissue” called Northern Tissue.
Each pack had 1,000 sheets of 4x10 inch paper
that were pierced with a wire loop to hang from a nail.
The product was such a success that by
1920 Northern Paper Mills was the world’s
largest producer of bath tissue.

Competitors sprung up and production of
toilet paper doubled between 1925 and 1935.
Such was the success of the toilet paper industry
that it helped Green Bay avoid the worst
effects of the Great Depression.

A 1943 advertisement for Northern Tissue

A serious problem did emerge.
Toilet paper, like most paper of the time,
was made from wood chips.
These were pulped, treated, cooked and washed.
However the process was not perfect.
Small pieces of wood would often
be embedded in the paper,
making for an occasionally shocking surprise.

Nearly 400 years on Gargantua’s foul
pronouncement on paper wipes—
“shall at his ballocks leave some chips”—
was ringing true.

Fortunately the engineers at Northern Paper worked
ceaselessly to develop the method of “linenizing”
paper which made toilet paper both softer and,
vitally, “splinter-free”.

Indeed so important was this discovery that
“Splinter-Free“ soon became Northern Tissue’s
slogan and led it and Green Bay’s toilet paper
manufacturers onto national and global success.

Charmin packaging from the 1930's through to the 1970's

After millennia of scraping around in the dark,
mankind had finally found a bottom-wiping tool
that was neither too dangerous nor too disgusting.
So the next time you bend over and swab the decks,
think of Green Bay. It’s thinking of you

Meanwhile the GOAT threw for 400 yards today.  The win was costly though as Evans got hurt bad.  It would be great to see the aBucs as the home team in the Super Bowl but it will be hard to get by GB in the cold.

Way to go, Houston. Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, for a four win season. A Dolphins blog says that's good for the third pic, but it looks to me like the Falcons go third, Dolphins fourth. Hopefully the Falcons will leave Sewell on the board....

While I empathize with my friends who are NY Giants fans, they really can't feel cheated out of a postseason berth with a 6-10 record.

Hell, the entire division had a cumulative 23-40-1 record. Embarrassing.

NFL jumping the shark..

Quote

Roughly a month ago, the NFL announced that one of its Wild Card games will be aired on Nickelodeon. The Bears and Saints will be the two teams aired on the special simulcast this weekend.

Nickelodeon’s broadcast will include slime graphics, clips from beloved shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, googly eyes and comic book-style bursts of color. It’s an interesting move from the NFL that should help attract a younger audience.

Urban Meyer to Jacksonville.  A deadly combination with Trevor Lawrence.  I think he’ll be the best in the league at assessing college talent and how/whether it translates to the NFL.

Hopefully no one gets killed.

good thinking outside the box by that guy.

When Tom is pissed and sets his mind to something, NOTHING gets in the way. Just ask the Atlanta Falcons...

This is not about another Superbowl ring.  It is personal.  He is out to prove Bill Bellichek was hobbling him with poor members (aka no credible running game)  around him for past couple of years in Foxboro instead of using some of the early draft picks.  Patriots were willing to match any other offer, but Tom declined that deal.

A win may make Hand Job Bob Kraft question some of BIll's decisions.

Amazing to think Tom is old enough to be the father for many of his teammates.

2 great quarterbacks.  2 great coaches.   Should make for an great game.

the decisions made at the end of the last drive made no sense. The last play Rogers was in for he could have run in for a touchdown or very close. The one before he also could have run but likely not make into end zone but still close. Also, the refs had been essentially ignoring holding and pass interference down field and then finally called one when it looked like the Bucs would have to punt. So many interference calls weren't called against the Bucs it totally changed the game.

Trade is getting rave reviews for lions.  They can ditch Goff after one year with no cap consequence.  Rams in the meantime won’t have a first round draft pick till 2027.

Meanwhile things are heating up pre Super Bowl in Tampa.  Big crowds (presumably locals) downtown and at NFL experience events.  Tony Romo is in the house!
