name that harbour

How about this one? If you look you can see the Stars lined up for their big regatta that this place hosts in December. IMG_6595.thumb.jpg.c41ebe8215caa754524643f788fd23fc.jpg

they could improve that affect by putting protected small openings in the seawall so all the water didn't have to flow in and out of the entrance

Doesnt seem like there should be lots of flow as it not that big an area.

It looks like a big ebb with the whirlpools but it could be all that mass transport from the swell hitting the north side of the south jetty. Any local opinion?

Yeah, that's O'side at it's very worst... It's really not that bad,

We had a problem with the dredging company a few years ago when they didn't remove enough sand infill. It created that left hand point break that went into the harbor. I surfed it before they dredged, then it was gone.

With all the rain washing the San Luis-Rey river out (a good thing) and some big south swells the entry is now down to 6ft in places...

In response to the comments about Oceanside, I have only a four words that work for all their "well-designed" harbors in California - Army Corps of Engineers. Gulp.

Yup, Oceanside can be hairy.  The key (usually) is to come in from the West close aboard the south tip of the north jetty.  You'll not get pushed into it, and you want to avoid being near the south jetty.

The closest I've come to crashing in SoCal was the Mission Bay  entrance. I saw the sand bottom of the channel near the breakwaters exposed during big westerly swells with Santa Anas and a low tide, barely able to avoid being  pushed off course by the breakers even with the engine at warp speed.   Because it faces almost due west, it is vulnerable much more to the effect of swells, winds, and currents than our “Big Bay” entrance, which is protected by Pt Loma. Before the Mission Bay channel was dredged and the south jetty extended in 2010, the mouth was extremely dangerous during storms, with waves breaking the entire width of the entrance. Several boats have sunk there, from surf kayaks to 35 ft fishing vessels.

No - Dana just has a single headland, not the three stacked like that.

It is an old photograph.

In the distance is Dana Point and the point in the middle is Princess Point which got scraped away when they built the harbor.

From the other direction;

Uh, quick question, maybe more a point of order, did Ed.'s software autocorrect "harbor" to "harbour" or are we getting cultured around here?

The most beautiful lagoon I have ever seen.

This one is still pretty good but is on the other side of the Americas. My middle daughter did her open water check out dive here.

That’s in Australia?  Are there enough sailboats in that shot for it to be Australia?   If Google makes it too easy, why didn’t  Mid say where it was?

So people should use pictures they took themselves and not ones used in ads?  (Not that that ad shows much in the NY tri-state area.)  Makes sense.
