roundthebuoys 1,004
Massive racial protest, turned culture war, during a 100 year pandemic, crashed economy, massive unemployment, scorn of the world, socialist bail outs, record debt... At this very moment in America you can walk out your door and get a virus and tear gassed at the exact same time, but wearing a mask is oppression. #butheremails

It's obvious what choice he made. He's not a leader, and he's WAY over his head.

I think it is more a matter of who wants to be a cop - people who want to show how tough they are and get to carry a gun. People who are responsible for selecting candidates tend to want to replicate who they are so it is self-perpetuating. The whole culture of policing has to change - the uniforms, the equipment used, the militaristic nature of much of it now.

Any job supervising kids attracts pedophiles. Any job that gives you nearly unlimited authority to beat and kill people attracts people who want to do just that. True enough, but IMHO that's still a minority of all that are attracted to the job. And a lot of education goes into making a police officer, hopefully learning that you can't beat people into submission in the long run, is a very simple lesson that should sink in somewhere along the line. But with the extremely bad example of President Bone Spurs at the top, you can't expect the worst of them to shine or the best of them to rise. - DSK

My son is a Mountie and exactly none of that applies to him - or his colleagues. When we went to his graduation at Depot there was one of his class missing. When they were putting on their red serge for the ceremonies he was overheard to say (paraphrased) "I can't wait to get out there and start knocking heads". He was terminated on the spot - the afternoon of graduation day. The phrase "Serve and Protect" is what draws the vast majority of people to the job. There are about 700,000 police officers in the USA and about 70,000 in Canada. How many are involved in incidents remotely like this? How many are killed on the job? kent_island_sailor 5,274
The RCMP might be better than many USA police departments, but they have not quite made it to sainthood yet: https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2019/05/17/rcmp-video-brings-home-reality-in-a-visceral-way-says-former-trc-chairman.html In the video, the officer can be heard asking her questions, including whether she was “at all turned on ... even a little bit” during the abuse she is describing. The young woman replies that she was not, adding she was “really scared.”The apparent attitudes and techniques on display in the video were profoundly outdated, offensive and wrong, Goodale added, stressing the RCMP and all police forces must work continuously to conduct themselves appropriately. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_controversies_involving_the_Royal_Canadian_Mounted_Police The list might be shorter than average, but they, like pretty much every other police agency, get some of the wrong people in there. Here is one cruising the jail for dates Mountie takes woman home from jail In 2011, a northern Manitoba RCMP officer took an intoxicated woman he had arrested out of a cell and to his home to "pursue a personal relationship." Several of his colleagues witnessed this but only two reported it. The constable admitted to the allegations, got a reprimand and lost pay for seven days. The Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation has called for an independent investigation.[32][33] The bolded part is the issue with reforming ANY police department. The cops are not at all unlike the mafia in one way, they value group loyalty and abhor a snitch.

The real question is, How do you manage this position of authority, to avoid the bad actors that want in or get in ? Or get jaded during the course of their careers? I believe it is very common for idealistic young person to join the military, become a firefighter, or a police officer, and go thru all the demanding schools & training with the idea that "I am going to use my powers on the side of GOOD!" Then as they see less than perfectly honest comrades/peers/mentors, are exposed to some of the shittiness of the average citizen (and cops do not see people at their finest), and slowly they acquire the attitude that there are no innocent citizens, just ones that haven't been caught. That plus the attitude that they can do anything they want, is sure to corrupt. This is a shame but I also think it's part of human nature. We need to be able to rotate cops once in a while to some kind of place where the citizens are good and appreciate them, as a break and as an attitude refresher. - DSK
