Iips for painting a Laser hull.

Recommended Posts

I have been here enough times to justify $300 for a proper Bosch 1/2 sheet orbital sander.  One of my better investments.  I budget tools separately from tasks.

Is this for drying out?
Other than that, I can't recommend a location, though -- one of the worst places to locate one (beside the obvious) is just beyond reach of backing for important rigging.
Incidentally, a while ago I read elsewhere in Dinghy Anarchy that someone blew apart his (5O5?) when he aimed the "blow" end of a shop vac into an inspection port.

My girlfriend painted her Laser using her lips and this was the result!

This is why you're not supposed to bypass the pressure regulator

Is this a good placement for the ports? I want the port on the front to also be able to be used to reinforce the mast step.

Yep, seen a bunch put in like that. I don't think there are any ribs/braces under the deck

I have been told by a Laser dealer that the inspection port on the bow deck should be off center. I don't know the reason. But that is what I was told.

I once had an inspection port beside the centreboard slot. It had a small removable bucket that was handy for storing a few things.

I've never heard this but then I've never talked to a Laser dealer about the topic. I have added inspection ports in front of the mast step on many Lasers through the years as required to reinforce the mast step and have always centered them just like the Admiral shows in his picture. The foam core of the deck is not present along the centerline (smooth section of gelcoat). No big deal. Also, don't mess with attaching the ports with screws - just use silicone. A port like @Bill5 mentions is really nice to store your lunch for long days on the water. Also, with that port next to the CB trunk you can duct tape a spare vang key to the underside of the port.

These pics are of the complete and refurbished laser! New updated rigging, a new Radial sail, as well as a centerboard and bottom section I got from @Alan Crawford. I had a great deal on the Harken Vang I got a used for $175. I 'm very pleased with the paint job, I sanded it down to 1500 grit, the hull is vastly smoother than it used to be originally

I'm taking it to a local regatta this week with a nice little 9 boat fleet, should be fun!

looking at this weather diagram, do you guys think there could be a favorable wind bend near the south shore? Or increased pressure?( I'm sailing in the enclosed bay pictured)

I'm already thinking out my pre race strategy:D

I recommend you find out who the best local sailor is in the fleet and go the same direction.

Be aware they may go off on the wrong tack together on Sunday, along with a pack of ducklings who don't figure out why soon enough.

Because what usually works doesn't apply this one day.

People at top of score sheets match racing late in series.

Slightly better boat speed (whether it is technique, better equipment like a new sail), make a select few look like tactical geniuses. :)

Then by that definition, unless you have won every race you have competed in, you are a lemming.
