Broken Harken furler drum

Recommended Posts

We have had a similar break on a Mk IV unit 4 a few times - the "in the field" repair was to use a flat stainless strap like you use for attaching webbing to things - basically a flat piece of stainless with two holes in it - and through bolt it through the two plates to hold them together.  We had a bunch of the stainless bits on the boat so not a big deal to repair, but we've ended up eventually ordering replacements from Harken.  To be honest the stainless bit is probably stronger than the harken original, as we've broke 2 or 3 of the harken pieces and never busted the jury-rigged one we keep as a replacement, but I guess we're not that smart!

The unit number should be visible near the tack swivel. Check the back of the manual for the plate part numbers. Won’t be too hard the get a new one installed.

why it broke? Black magic, bad luck, or bad actors maybe...could have been the line caught it just right.

Contact Harken technical service. They are very competent and helpful.

Yes indeed, Rick was very helpful. I ordered the replacement part.

Him and our rigger both said "This happened probably due to not enough wraps of line on the drum". "...not enough raps on the furling drum when furling.  So, the furling line pulls the drum apart.  We see this all the time."

Aren't you supposed to have a couple of wraps when the jib is fully furled?
