Gouvernail 2,889
A local fellow has a mastless San Juan 23 i have a collection of various spars. we would like to choose the most appropriate mast. or decide we don’t have one. Sailboat data gives me a pretty good idea of what Kirby had Clarke use but I would love to know EXACTLY what came on the 23. I have J-24 masts and a San Juan 24 mast. The J24 mast is hull stepped and light weight . The SJ 23 weighs 400 lbs less than a J-24 the SJ -24 mast is a beast. The SJ24 has nearly double the ballast of a SJ23 and I am concerned about using a mast that is obviously way heavier than correct anyway... for all I know, the J-24 mast could be the exact same extrusion as a San Juan 23. Dors anybody here have access to look at a San Juan 23??
SloopJonB 8,656
FWIW my Nelson Marek 1/2 Tonner - about 6200 Lbs - uses a SJ 24 extrusion. It was raced hard for years and still has the original spar.

xyzzy 52
I took a look at a SJ23 at the marina here. Extrusion is about 4.75" x 3.5" teardrop shape. Looks like the same one as used on the SJ7.7 as far as I could tell.
