this list puts George Straight at the 11th best selling artist of all time. https://www.businessinsider.com/50-best-selling-albums-all-time-2016-9

Living in a rock and roll world it is easy to NOT see CW. A stint in the service, SC, TX, AZ enlightened me.  Geez there is a lot of people in the south.  and a lot of  music and talent.  George Straight was /is good but my barracks buddies turned me on to Waylon and Willie.  All/Each made bedrock contributions.....and I do like George Straight....

george led the neo traditionalist movement in country.  willie and waylon led outlaw country.  george ushered in randy travis, clint black, alan jackson, dwight yokim, etc.

Another Tom T Hall winner...

"He smiled and all his teeth were covered with tobacco stains

He said it don't do men no good to pray for peace and rain

Peace and rain is just a way to save prosperity

And buffalo chips is all that means to me "

That must be from the country part of Jersey.

Ha! Maybe this is not country enough either, but it's good...

Deep, like the grandest canyon.

Wild, like an untamed stallion.

If you can't see my heart you must be blind.

You can knock me down and watch me bleed, but you can't keep no chains on me.

I was born free!

There's so many pretty people in this city,

I swear some of them are girls!

Said James, "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a '52 Vincent and a Redheaded girl.
Now Nortons and Indians and Greavses won't do.
Oh, they don't have a Soul like a Vincent '52."

Livin' on the road, my friend
Was gonna keep you free and clean
And now you wear your skin like iron
And your breath is hard as kerosene
Weren't you mamma's only boy?
Her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
Sank to your dreams
Pancho was a bandit, boys
His horse was fast as polished steel
He wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel
Pancho met his match, you know
On the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dyin' words
Oh, but that's the way it goes
All the Federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him slip away
Out of kindness, I suppose
Lefty, he can't sing the blues
All night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down South
Ended up in Lefty's mouth
The day they lay poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go
There ain't nobody knows
All the Federales say
We could have had him any day
We only let him slip away
Out of kindness, I suppose
The poets tell how Pancho fell
And Lefty's livin' in cheap hotels
The desert's quiet, Cleveland's cold
And so the story ends, we're told
Pancho needs your prayers, it's true
Save a few for Lefty, too
He only did what he had to do
And now he's growin' old
All the Federales say
We could have had him any day
They only let him go so long
Out of kindness, I suppose
A few gray Federales say
Could have had him any day
We only let him go so long
Out of kindness, I suppose
