I think this whole sea shanty thing is bit of a myth, or a victorian affectation.  Having sailed with square rig everything is so fucking heavy you need every ounce of breath to haul on the lines.

But you're just a modern softy, not a 16th century, brought up lifting and pulling from age 5 working with your parents till age 12, then heaving ropes on board ships until by age 20 you could out haul 99% of modern men.

One of my faves - South Australia - about the old wool ships bound for South Oz from England, leaving the girl behind in port, and rounding the Horn in dreadful conditions en route.  I taught my daughter about this one years ago as a kid, to get her in the sailing adventure mood ! :-)

And as we wallop around Cape Horn / You’d wish to Christ you’d never been born!

Heave away, you rolling king, Heave away! Haul away!  / All the way you'll hear me sing / We're bound for South Australia!

I was the guitarist for a group of street performers that did shanties and songs of the sea about five years ago.  "Soon May the Wellerman Come" was one of the songs I brought into our repertoire because it was then unknown and is well-written and appeals to the modern ear.  We played it often and it was well received.  I had first heard the song on a recording by Bok, Trickett, and Muir.  It isn't a shanty as such, though some of the other material was used was.

It's cool to see broader interest in the genre.

Here it is a bit differently.  Not a sea shanty anymore, but more of a drinking song.

Not exactly a shanty's per se but "Spirit of the West". They use to hang out at the pub that I frequent once and a while 6 blocks from home !

RIP John Mann

You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best
I've been gone for a month, I've been drunk since I left
These so-called vacations will soon be my death
I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest

The band name is enough to know with certainty that the "Gaelic" element of this is ersatz.  Sure enough, a quick peek at Wikipedia shows that it's a Californian band which has performed in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Japan.  Note that Ireland isn't on the list.

Gaelic is the English word anyway, in Scots Gaelic it's "Gaidhlig", in Irish Gaelic  it's "Gaeilge".

Note, diacritical marks are missing from the spelling , I can't handle them on this tablet ...

Ahoy scurvey's
Listen to this then
It was on the good ship Venus
By Christ, ya should've seen us
The figurehead was a whore in bed
And the mast, a mammoth penis
The captain of this lugger
He was a dirty bugger
He wasn't fit to shovel shit
From one place to another
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Captain's name was Morgan
By Christ, he was a gorgon
Ten times a day sweet tunes he'd play
On his fuckin' organ
The first mate's name was Cooper
By Christ he was a trooper
He jerked and jerked until he worked
Himself into a stupor
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Hold on
Give it some bollocks
The second mate was Andy
By Christ, he had a dandy
'Til they crushed his cock on a jagged rock
From cumming in the brandy
The cabin boy was Flipper
He was a fuckin' nipper
He stuffed his ass with broken glass
And circumcised the skipper
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Ahoy Jimmy
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
The Captain's wife was Mabel
To fuck she was not able
So the dirty shits, they nailed her tits
Across the barroom table
The Captain had a daughter
Who fell in deep sea water
Delighted squeals we knew the eels
Had found 'er sexual quarters
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
Friggin' in the riggin'
There was fuck all else to do
