qwerty57 21
This one doesn't seem to have anything to do with the sea, but it does use a shanty format!

Whinging Pom 262
I think this whole sea shanty thing is bit of a myth, or a victorian affectation. Having sailed with square rig everything is so fucking heavy you need every ounce of breath to haul on the lines.

But you're just a modern softy, not a 16th century, brought up lifting and pulling from age 5 working with your parents till age 12, then heaving ropes on board ships until by age 20 you could out haul 99% of modern men.

Jud - s/v Sputnik 1,429
One of my faves - South Australia - about the old wool ships bound for South Oz from England, leaving the girl behind in port, and rounding the Horn in dreadful conditions en route. I taught my daughter about this one years ago as a kid, to get her in the sailing adventure mood ! :-) And as we wallop around Cape Horn / You’d wish to Christ you’d never been born! Heave away, you rolling king, Heave away! Haul away! / All the way you'll hear me sing / We're bound for South Australia!
2airishuman 325
I was the guitarist for a group of street performers that did shanties and songs of the sea about five years ago. "Soon May the Wellerman Come" was one of the songs I brought into our repertoire because it was then unknown and is well-written and appeals to the modern ear. We played it often and it was well received. I had first heard the song on a recording by Bok, Trickett, and Muir. It isn't a shanty as such, though some of the other material was used was. It's cool to see broader interest in the genre.

Not a sea shanty anymore, but more of a drinking song.

TwoLegged 2,238
The band name is enough to know with certainty that the "Gaelic" element of this is ersatz. Sure enough, a quick peek at Wikipedia shows that it's a Californian band which has performed in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Japan. Note that Ireland isn't on the list. The Q 787
Gaelic is the English word anyway, in Scots Gaelic it's "Gaidhlig", in Irish Gaelic it's "Gaeilge". Note, diacritical marks are missing from the spelling , I can't handle them on this tablet ...

Son of Hans 53
Thanks for that! I'll bet that's a lot closer to sea shanties as actually sung as compared to the stuff made up for the tourists at dockside.
