Looks like both boats are fast enough to stay in front of the other if they win the start. Think Kiwis are a little faster, but not decisive.

I think port entry is basically decisive if you don't mistime your run back to the line.

On screen graphics have really made a step

Loved the bit afrer the second start with the boat heading lines as they maneuvered.

LR looks higher and faster upwind, ETNZ faster and lower downwind.

These legs need to be at least twice as long for a quicker trailing boat to catch up.

And twice as wide

How’s LR’s lead at that last mark? Not as big now is it.

Great race this one!! Well sailed by LR and ETNZ never stopped fighting.

TNZ had a good start of last upwind, halved the lead but LR stabilised 2nd half.

TNZ closed up to under 150m on the downwind but are gonna run out of distance.

That’s more betterer.
We have a series.
Some shifty breeze would be fun.

LR pooched the last gate rounding.  It goes to show, though, that ETNZ has some fast straight lined speed.

LR looks like they can go into point mode better though.

Perfect first day, (since I have no skin in the game).
It looks like we gonna have a series.
Lina Rossa has just confirmed its best result ever in any America´s Cup by getting one point.
Congratulations to both teams.

Awesome work by both teams to take a new class during times with little real sailing, yet come up with two competitive boats!

I think it was PB realising he'd fucked up.

So it seems we can win even in Te Rehutai preferred range. Good race. Bravi ragazzi. Without the JK call that didn't pay at all the gap would have been greater. Game on. First time LR wins a race against the Kiwis in AC race. Never say never. Now Mr Pete knows they must win every start.

Odd boats.  They are like NASCAR speedway cars.  The boat trailing can’t pass without help.  So is it going to be the first team to win 7 starts will win the Cup?

Gimme 1.5hr races in these things dammit.

Why?  So there will be 1.5 hours of follow the leader?  The first two races were decided in the 2minutes of the pre-start.

ETNZ seemed slower through turns, slower to get back to speed than R1. Odd.

The grinders will be spewing blood after 45 minutes!!

I think these stored energy boats should be made to use hydro generators to charge the stores rather than grinders. Grinders should only grind live trim.

Yeah - was it PB?

Someone had realised they'd screwed it.

Might make it back to L1 on North Head at this rate. Well sailed LRPP.

Why not 8 laps?

Good to see the whinging NZ fanboys getting in early with complaints about course size!

Match racing has always been about winning the start - the difference in the last few cups is that even downwind the lead boat has the advantage due to the apparent wind.

Great graph they just showed. LR faster through turns upwind. If you think the race is won in the start, it’s the start, AND the first tack. Even if you’re not in an optimal spot on the start, as long as you’re fast, can tack quicker, and can get to speed faster, you’ve got a good shot.

Btw Etnz has a speed edge in these conditions indeed. But with a good start it can be managed sailing perfectly

"sailing perfectly" involve things like throwing in a JK with no reason other than giving me a stroke? (I'm asking for a friend...):P

You are all missing the point, SBD called it, except backwards!
