fastyacht 1,601
Posit: crude oil has quadruplled humans in a century. Global Warming Climate Catastophe is a function of population which is itself a result of increased fertility due to food and resource availability including technological improvements. Plastics and erspecially microplastics are and will contunue to cause reduced fecundity. Result: Nature wins. Humans become incapable of maintaining population. Wilderness returns. Forests absorb carbon, a New Ice Age Epoch dawns, and things get back to normal.

Windward 407
This is why the aliens periodically fly by. They pop over to see if the planet is ready for plucking, and see that humans are still infesting the place. Playbook says to simply wait, and the bedbug infestation will die out on its own, and the planet will self heal. The aliens from planet X are a patient lot (not politically far left or right)... no need to rush or put in extra effort. Plenty of sandy beaches elsewhere in the cosmos. Earth just isn't ripe yet.
