I think a good choice in the £30-40k purchase price bracket, lots available although getting a little older so won't be in pristine condition. Rates pretty well under IRC windward / leeward but not as effective upwind as a Corby 29 and not strong white sail reaching. Small and light enough to be fun downwind in the way that a 105/109 sort of isn't. Cat B so you can't do the Fastnet but you can do Channel races.

The J/97 has more of a 'bandit' IRC handicap but is in a different cost bracket.

Cracking boat. I raced one for a couple of years on the Solent a while back. Ours was campaigned on a shoe string and we thoroughly abused it but it was great fun. Would have benefitted from some newer sails, better running rigging, better hull finish and inhaulers etc. The boat was fast in the light airs and a blow but struggled against Sigma 38s which rated the same. Our rated 0.995 which is high but generally they now rate between 0.990 and 0.975

There are numerous ones around here that are universally fast on the light air of the Chesapeake-great all-around boat. Obviously, IRC not used around here so can't answer that question.
