And medical insurance will only pay for some of it. Exactly. I needed extensive treatment and surgery from a specialty cancer center in Manhattan. Insurance covered it all without an issue. Except for travel there, a place to stay for me and family, restaurant meals, etc. “hospital rate” hotel rooms in midtown ran $250-350/night and didn’t qualify as medical expenses, etc. The hospital does what it can to help find affordable accommodations but that is not much in Manhattan. Add in SWMBO taking Family Leave time off without pay for a lot of it. Our employers did set us up for mostly remote work and that helped. I’m told some of my “emails while on pain meds” were pretty classic. Bottom line is that any of us who have dealt with major medical issues can point to plenty of uncovered and unexpected expenses. Hobot has given us a lot of his time and energy. The least we can do is support him.

Ambulance is free if you have a health care card (for pensioners, students and welfare recipients) or you've paid abt $50 per year Ambulance insurance to the Organization. I got taken to the Hosp couple of months ago. Cost me $1200 for a 4km trip. Thank's for reminding me to pay that 50 bucks I was diagnosed with breast cancer 2 months ago. I had to pay for the mamogram, Ultrasound initial Specialist consultation and biopsy because it was done in a private facility within 3 days of discovery. I have no private health insurance. out of pocket cost? abt $800 total Then whoosh. off to public hosp for surgery one week later. (Surgery done by the same private specialist) One isotope insertion, radiological images ,surgery, anesthetic, theatre and overnight stay. Biopsy, daily radiotherapy for 3 weeks, 6 specialist reviews and ongoing specialist follow up for the next 5 years. Cost to me? Zero. (I even get fixed price parking at the Hospital for daily treatments, it would be free if I were a pensioner or other low income recipient) (The cancer is managed for now, small invasive grade 1)

Zonker 2,893
In BC we pay $80 for an ambulance (ground or air). If visiting other parts of Canada expect a bill for a few hundred to several hundred dollars. I had ass cancer which was finally diagnosed in early 2019. Did oral chemo/radiation, followed by removal of rectum surgery in fall 2019. Lots of CAT scans, colonscopies, dr. visits. More fingers up my ass than an inexpensive sex worker. More IV chemo Dec 2019/Jan 2020. "Reversal" surgery in July 2020 during the pandemic lull (got rid of the colostomy bag yay). IV port in shoulder so they could put in IV's easier. Minor day surgery to remove IV port. Lots of follow-up blood tests every 3 months and annual CAT scan. Cost: about $24 for 2 enema kits before 2 of the colonscopies. $8 for some dry shampoo when I was in the hospital for 11 days and couldn't shower. Maybe $60 for the first batch of oral chemo drugs. The IV drugs were covered since it was in-patient. A few bucks for parking for my wife when she visited most days.

It really doesn't fade the curtains or upset the cows. Here we go again! A stupid suggestion from another Mexican who is obviously completely ignorant of why "day-light" saving, although great in Hobart, very good in Melbourne, good in Sydney and even OK in Byron Bay, is totally inappropriate for the state of Queensland. Educate yourself. Slip down to your local library, you've probably even got your own key, and find a nice map of Queensland. Draw a vertical line through Cairns and see how much of Queensland lies to the West of said line. Whilst doing so note the longitude of Cairns, Brisbane, Byron Bay and anywhere else that is of interest. Using a pencil and paper work out how many minutes (of time not longitude) difference between the aforementioned cities. Go to the Microfiche reader and get copies of the Hobart Mercury, The Age, SMH, Courier Mail and whatever is the Cairns daily. Look up the Sunrise and Sunset times in each. Notice a pattern? If the pattern is eluding you try looking up the times for Nauru and Anchorage. You're welcome. P.S. I'm from Sydney and appreciate the benefits of daylight saving, but only where appropriate. P.P.S I will leave it at that as I really don't want to take away from the intent of this thread.

Hobot's blood pressure fell last night, and they had to find out why and what was causing the blood pressure to fall. They gave him two units of blood to bring the blood pressure up. They found two stress ulcers that we're causing the blood loss, but didn't say where, but possibly his stomach. They've got him hooked up to a third unit of blood right now. When this came down last night, they brought in all the specialist doctors, doing what they could do to determine the blood loss. They scoped him to find the ulcers - my wife says they can and probably scoped him from either end. Hobot has been on oxygen since off the ventilator and intubation, and had him down to 10% oxygen last night, but that has been brought up to 30 and then 40% since. He's constantly being monitored by nurses, and doctors are on standby in case he goes into distress again. They also just put him on the ventilator again. My wife says putting him on a ventilator actually puts him into more stress, and can stress the ulcers, and may continue to need more units of blood till he can handle breathing on his own. Hobot was weened off the sedatives and was finally communicating yesterday afternoon, and asked about my wife and I, and right after that in the same breath , the sailors on Sailing Anarchy. The next thing Mark asked Hope about, what they were going to use for money. She told him not to worry about it now. I also discussed with Hope about getting the ball rolling on the 'Gofundme'. She has to set up another account or take the monies in through her account. She can't use his only account, his business account, because they're gonna shut it down as soon as customers pay off and close their accounts with him. I told Hope we need to set this up sooner, rather then later - today if possible. Doing all I can to keep you all informed sailors - when I find out, I tell you as soon as I can type a message. I find out anything and I let you all know immediately, even if I have to pull over and text while driving. Believe me his caregivers want Hobot to get better, and are doing any and everything to accomplish that. Please stay positive for Hobot. He's under as good of care as possible.

boomer 914
Quite alright Mike - I understand that you and everyone else here is concerned. Hobot's life is intertwined with his daughters, Hope, sailing and Sailing Anarchy and all the sailors on SA, since shortly after it's inception. Hobot really does care about SA and the sailors of SA.

boomer 914
Hope just called again for another quick update. Hobot's condition has been stabilized. They gave him drugs to stem the bleeding and to protect the ulcers from further - and the bleeding stopped. They put four units of blood in him now, and have a fifth unit hanging and ready just in case. They hope to get him back off the ventilator by tonight or tomorrow morning. They expressed confidence that he will get through this. Stay positive sailors.

Mike in Seattle 128
Purple, we are all really tense about Hobot and Hope. At the same time, we are a really "Strange" group of personalities, and it can take a while to understand. I'm thinking that "git up off yer ass" will mean as much to them as the other "normal" well wishes. , or I could be completely fulla shitte
