Former CDC Director Under Trump Now Promoting Unproven Virus-Killing Tech for 'Big Ass Fans'

The former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under Donald Trump, Dr. Robert Redfield, has landed a sweet gig at...Big Ass Fans.

Per Kaiser Health News (KHN), Redfield is now a strategic health and safety adviser for the company, effectively lending his scientific reputation to Big Ass Fans and the $9,450 ion-generating model it claims is 99.99% effective at sterilizing rooms from the coronavirus. Dr. Deborah Birx, the former coordinator of the White House coronavirus task force, has signed on with a separate company called ActivePure which markets products that release small amounts of hydrogen peroxide as having a similar success rate. Experts told KHN that despite the endorsement from some of the nation’s highest-profile infectious disease specialists, these devices aren’t proven to work and similar ones have been shown to potentially generate harmful byproducts.

Some of Big Ass Fans’s Clean Air Systems models use sterilizing UVC light, which isn’t controversial and is widely deployed in sanitation. Others, according to KHN, use an unproven bipolar ionization technique that has been the subject of an Environmental Protection Agency warning and is viewed skeptically by scientists who study air quality. Such add-ons can cost $500 to $1,500 more than the company’s standard air-moving fans.

University of Wisconsin-Madison chemistry professor Timothy Bertram told KHN that “it’s completely unproven whether these devices would work in a real-world setting.” He added his research has shown that ion-generating and hydroxyl-releasing products may create potentially harmful ozone or other small particles, and that tried-and-true air filtration tech is the most effective option.

“When they give you 99.999%, that’s a red flag to any scientist. We don’t know anything to that degree,” Bertram told KHN. “That’s just nuts.”

I'm glad that Kaiser has seen fit to give Doctor Redfield another chance to kill more people.

I thought Big Ass Fans were just your basic Trump supporter.

I'm disappointed to hear the BA Fans is pushing this unproven ion solution. They are a for real company and have some amazing products.

I have a BAF. I used to have 2. The starter capacitors keep rotting. They say it's the climate. You'd think that if they know there's a problem, that they'd fix it. But it's very difficult to get replacement capacitors for BAFs over 10 years old, so they just expect you to ditch the old one, and buy another. Guess what? There's lots of other air moving companies on the internet.

Caps are widely available in lots of different sizes and electrical specs.  You can probably find what you need at any electrical parts store.

Yup. That's what the jerk at BAF told me when I told him he was nuts to think that I'd spend $70 on a repair kit, when I didn't even know exactly what was wrong.... Thing is..... I hate electrical stuff. Big blue sparks, and loud popping noises make me nervous. I've been hit by lightning once, nailed by 240v AC once, 440v AC once, and 220v DC once... maybe twice. Not fun.

So, you finally learned something?

Almost got hit by lightening once.  There is no explaination for why a bolt of lightening would smash the ocean just near our boat, rather than connecting with the large metal stick.  But it did light us up and all our wet clothes were stuck to our bodies from static electricity.  It was very close.

Shocking!

I was going to give some advice on the process of grounding and removing a motor-start cap, but on second thought, it's a bad idea.

I figure I'm pretty safe from lightning... And if the fan is unplugged, I feel fairly safe... Then again I had an unplugged belt sander go scooting across my work bench one day during a thunderstorm.

The start cap (or run cap) issue is cheap-ass caps. Can't get decent parts now that the world has had it's massive race to the cheapest. I'll replace a cap for the condenser fan in the A/C once a year, no matter what supplier I've tried. The 20 yo one on the compressor is still fine.

It was semi-rare to replace them way back when I was an actual A/C tech paying for school. Now I keep a few in the garage for myself and neighbors.

Why sell a part for $30 that never goes bad when I can sell 10 of them for $20?

(Oh, and "bipolar ionization technique" sure sounds like dropping a bunch of $$$ for a pile of bovine excrement)

Ionization can kill bacteria

I dunno what it will do to a virus, or what exposure levels are needed for a low enough survival rate... if you don't kill >99.5% of them, all you do is breed resistant ones faster than you can build the machine that "kills 99.5% of pathogen X"

I would suspect that hi-intensity UV would do more against a virus.

I flew a drone into a big ass fan during a shoot once in a big arena. My wife had "one job" that day, it was to warn me if I was getting too close to a fan, altitude wise. Right in the middle of a shot, almost right over the talent, the drone hits the fan with a loud grinding clattering noise. I chopped the throttle and got away amazed I was still in control. I could see a landing gear leg in the camera, where it normally wasn't in the picture. I landed safely, changed props, fixed the drone and flew again. We asked that they turn off the fans. We all had a good laugh, she had just one job.
