Tragic loss of a 16 YO yesterday.

Several 911 calls on a young man in a driveway brandishing a pistol and knife.  State troopers responded, kid took a "firing stance" and aimed at the cop.  Passerby reported kid was behaving erratically.  Predictable result.

Fucking airsoft pistol without a red/orange flash.  Lots of responsible sport shooters and hunters here along with some " I have my rights" players who are not completely wrong. Already some rumors of mental health issues but who knows how accurate.

Hopefully cool heads prevail and it's easy to take a hard line on either side but the result is a dead kid and a cop who will live with a decision for the rest of his life.

Are these kids hitting the pills? Are they jumping off tall buildings? Or are gunshot injuries the cause of death?

I know why you highlighted "without".  Really though, in this day and age would it have mattered?  We have instances of the bad guys painting up real guns to look like nerf guns.  Removing the orange tips is par for the course for folks too.  Just grab a pair of pliers or a hacksaw.  Hell, an industrious 7 year old could do it.

There's a solution to this.  But a whole lot of people simply aren't open to it.

Before I grew up and stopped killing things, it was cool to show people pictures (almost), but now it's really stupid.

You are probably correct.  You do see plenty of "decoy" guys painted to look like toys.

Just some additional news.  White kid, honors HS student, enrolled in a Intl Bac curriculum, college track with lots of history bias.  Location was 2 doors down from the Country "State Police Barrack" so rapid LEO response guaranteed.  Kid was family oriented, blah, blah.   Trooper has about 38 months on the force with a good rep and, as in most small communities, a local resident.  My nurse today's husband is a local Sheriff's Deputy and the local LEOs are pretty shell shocked at this.  Family has made a couple of statements but their are pretty shocked as the kid is nothin of a "gun nut" and "would never have expected him to be waving any gun (even toy) at the cops. some speculation on COVID isolation mental issue or drugs. Like many rural areas, we have a poorly acknowledged youth drug problem (mostly opiates) and a steady flow of "product" coming from DC and suburbs.

Tragedy all around. Plenty of legal guns here used for hunting/sporting.  Hunters often also carry handguns in the field.  Kind of place where you pull into the grocery store parking lot and are nor surprised that the pickup truck in the next spot has a deer or some geese in the back during the season.  We have our gun nuts and our gun grabbers but generally folks are used to seeing guns around and not uncomfortable with that.  We get annoyed with the drug traffic associated shootings and pissed at the rare passion induced shootings from uncontrolled "home defense" handgun shootings.

What is the race of the kid and the race of the officer involved?  I didn't see that mentioned anywhere in any of the news reports.  How am I expected to make an informed decision on a story like this without those salient facts???

It's not a mental health issue. It's a cultural/media issue.

When you grow up (or not, but become older) with video games that aggrandize killing, and movies that aggrandize killing, and TV shows that aggrandize killing, torture, publicity, and then you have next week's episode, it becomes not such a big deal.

People used to decry Roadrunner Vs. Wile. E. Coyote, Daffy Duck, and Bugs bunny Vs. Elmer Fudd because of the violence. That cartoon violence is just a drop of spit in the ocean compared with today's offerings.

When I was growing up (OK I never grew up, but got older) We never heard about kidnapped kids, or father's raping daughters, or mothers drowning their kids. The most horrifying things we heard about were the kids from the next town over who would tie dogs to the train tracks (Completely un-true, but terrifying), or the rumors of the Catholic priest molesting little boys (Probably un-true, and as a child I had no idea what "molesting" was).

Now people see these stories on dubious and not so dubious websites, get ideas, and go to make a name for themselves, or just to see if it really can be done.

Too much information is a bad thing sometimes.

Not sure. Good HS friend of our so who still drops by is a social worker locally and will probably offer some insights as facts become known.

The school shooting at GM several years ago was the unrequited love teenage boy grabbing his dad’s unsecured bedside home defense handgun and taking it to school with him. The discussion was not helped when our National congressional delegation rolled out the “got to get rid of assault weapons” before the lockdown was over.
Actually pretty satisfied that the investigation into the facts seems to have more focus than the drama so far. We want to know why this kid died and how we can avoid the next one.

Wrong. Rate went down significantly after the BOI (FBI antecedent) decided to shut it down in the 30s following a number of high profile kidnappings, including Lindbergh. We have some time f the lowest kidnapping rates on earth.

Rick you gotta stop pulling numbers from the comments section of foxnews bro.  You’re not usually so obviously a mark.

Suicides down >5% from 2019 to 2020 despite pre-2020 year-on-year increases for a decade.

Suicides among 8-14, 15-24 flat or down slightly from 2019 despite a decade+ of increases until 2020.

report is up at NIMH if you’d prefer facts and not repeating what some asstard spread to people he thinks are too gullible to realize he’s all fraud.

You seem to be unaware that automatic weapons are THE most regulated weapon a US citizen may own.  Like, heavily regulated.

Would you care to show us how much you know about this by specifying mass shootings in which an automatic weapon was used?

'Racist'? 'Scared of black people'? You stupid fuk, I spent 45 years living & working in Southern California, one of the most ethnically diverse areas in this country. Furthermore, I've spent twenty years south of The Tortilla Curtain, on purpose....where I'm in the 2% racial minority 'class'. If that makes a racist then you really need to go back to school and finish up 3rd Grade.....

Automatic weapons are heavily regulated in the US.  Heavily.  Far more than any other weapon available to the public.  As a result, they are not only difficult to obtain, they are ridiculously expensive to purchase.  You need to accept that fact.

Now, in recent history, how many times was an automatic weapon used in a mass shooting?  I mean, you did say they need to be "banned".

Shirley, you have some knowledge supporting this position.  Numbers would be nice.  Expressed as a per capita or raw population.  Doesn't matter.

Either way, the number is far smaller than you probably think.  But, go ahead and give it a shot.

Yep. You're a bullshitter. Even break barrel pellet guns with a rifled bore have always been regulated in Australia. Nice try at deflection though

Smooth bore, not rifled.  Smooth bore has been regulated since 98. If yours was rifled you were breaking the law.

Which law, in which state? We did not have unified gun laws prior to little Johnny Winston throwing his toys after Port Arthur.

Sorry, but I think you are making shit up based on faulty memory. Rifled barrel air rifles were ubiquitous where I lived, and no one had a license. Or permit.

Automatic weapons = military arms like .50 cal machine guns and M-16s. Almost never used in crime in the USA since the 1920s.

If you want to make a sensible argument, don't use the wrong words that mean the wrong things or you get wrong results. If civilian ownership of automatic weapons was totally banned in the USA, the number of homicides in the USA would not change one bit.

22,000 a year are suicides. They don't count.

2000 a year are accidental deaths. They're 'accidents'...check your dictionary.

6000 a year are gang-on-gang killings. They don't count.

4500 a year are justifiable law enforcement shooting deaths. They don't count.

The remaining 5000 murders per year are criminal homicides. Those DO count.

So 5000 criminal homicides a year, in a country of 337 million people, who own almost 425 million 'legal' firearms, as well as close to 90 billion rounds of 'legal' ammunition......is absolutely fuking nothing. Seriously, if you Girls would stop with the vagina tears and start being a bit more pragmatic and knowledgeable about this shit....you MAY.....eventually be informed enough to sit down at the Big Boy Table and begin a real conversation of what the problem is with these fuking nut cases that do shit like this. Mental disorders, no Dads in the house, psychotropic drugs being handed out like licorice sticks, shit rap music, the Hollywood fuker a, the video game fukers, the fuking sports 'stars', a kiss-ass Leftista media with a HUGE financial agenda.....and a bleeding heart judicial system that doesn't enforce the ten zillion gun laws already on the books.

Seriously, THOSE.....are America's biggest obstacles in reducing those 5000 annual homicides.....not more 'gun law's.

He's already confessed that he used "automatic" when he should have said "semi-auto". (Actually he made up some crap about anything with any automation counts as "Auto" in his world, but I trust anyone with a triple digit IQ understood what he meant.) Or perhaps been pedantic enough to specify each of the categories A to D.

You however have not recanted your bullshit that all rifled guns have always been regulated. Hence inferring something about the effectiveness of the AU approach. Actually I have no idea what point you were trying to make under your "licensed to kill" moniker.

Semi auto were also regulated. Bolt action single shots were regulated.

You can wade through the time back machine and prove me wrong on anything I've stated if you like, I'll happily stand corrected.

a self loader is an automatic.

the distinction between fully auto and semi auto was put in place to dilute the argument and obfuscate.

see this thread for an example.
