It's Ragtop Dreaming time again!

Recommended Posts

It seems about every April I get at least one BAT announcement that sets my heart on fire and my mind starts calculating the cost/ benefit ratio of windblown hair on a summer day vs a few grand sitting uselessly in a checking account somewhere.

Last year it was an immaculate 2002 Audi TT convertible turbo AWD that the Carfax showed had had meticulous pro maintenance and had already had 2 new timing belts. Unfortunately they wanted almost $6K and at 198 K miles I just couldn't pull the trigger. I stood fast on my $3K offer hoping for a call back from them.  I've rued that decision for a year now.

A few days ago I got this...

Gorgeous Saab Ragtop

1994_saab_900_convertible_1618512465e3d9

I've always been a Saab fan but as everyone knows, they aren't long lived and are pricey to keep running after a certain age. Well, this 1994 has only 20K miles on it and of course, I can't get it out of my head.

Opening bid was $9K, it's currently up to $16,750 with 5 days left.

Heavy sigh! Over and out, again.

Like boats... the purchase price isn't where the cost is typically located.

So if you like it, buy it.   If you can afford to keep whatever it is, then you should be able to sell at some point recouping a % of the buy cost.   Ideally...

But!   Hold on there Mr Remaining hair/toupee in the wind.  Now that we are in the silly season of covid stimulus checks, no chips for new cars, and spring, the trifecta of lousy used convertible car pricing may give you pause.

I say go for it. (perhaps not the Saab)

Your hair will thank you.

Heh, heh, if there's one thing on me that isn't fading away with age, it's the hair on my head.

I'd welcome the windswept look, it can't be any worse than my typical brillo fro.

I've done this a few times. first was a MB 320SL. happy, fun little car, that. sadly It was impaled on a overly long trailer hitch. exaclty a week after I'd spent the coin to put a new top on it.

next came a string of 3 or 4   500SLs ... never dropped more than 6-8k on one depending on the mileage. I like driving them, they fit around my big arse when the top's down. which is a problem with many of the fun little ragtops out there.

most of them are fine when the tops down. but I found it challenging to get in and out of some of these with the top up.

current version is a 97 XK8. easy to get in and out. not as tight a handling car as that Audi would have been, but i'm gettin old and soft and dont tend to push cars as hard as I once did. Got lucky on this one as first two owners had kept up with Service bulletins and preemptively did things like the timing chain tensioner replacement. This car has 98k miles on it. picked it up 5 years ago for 7k. just watched a couple videos of Electric conversion on one in CA. tempting...

Yet you were bidding on an Audi.

BAT has gone nuts in prices of old cars. I'd keep checking local craigslist and find a car that has been babied by their owner.

Doug Demuro's new auction site could also be useful. https://carsandbids.com/auctions/rGx0JAAj/2007-saab-9-3-aero-convertible

Just picked up a 2017 430i hardtop, Coupe Convertible with 13,500 miles on it, in dark grey, black interior.  With the windscreen up behind the seats, Missus BB's hair doesn't even blow around!!  2 Liter 24 valve 4 cylinder twin scroll turbo puts out 248 BHP. Not much trunk space with the top down, but plenty for PFD, foul weather kit, boots, etc.  I would have preferred a brown or tan interior, but I stumbled upon this one, and didn't even shop around, just bought it.  Life is short...

of the current offerings on BaT, this is the one that blew my dress up .. loved those old Broncos.. had an 84 once, all white with dark red interior.. was like driving around in a brothel.   btw, the top comes off!!!!! of the back anyway.. still get a bit of breeze pulling your hat and glasses off..

I think one of these is probably the reason I enjoyed the "Longmire" series as much as I did LOL

I had a few of these... Ironically I liked the inline 300CI 6 cyl better than the V8

The nuances of why are long lost to time, but I had each flavor.

Couldn't be bothered to take the top off.  I bet it would leak from there on to the end of time if you did.

top removal wasn't too bad, and as I recall, I never had any leaks issues after putting it back on. I think the lip/gasket arrangement was actually pretty well thought out on that.. odd for an American car ;)

Traded my 3 series hardtop in for an X5. Miss putting too down. Was nearing 100k on it (2011). Didn’t want to pay to get rear seals fixed as starting to leak. Sad though. I know I will miss it this year

That car? Is seriously like those super-smokin' hot 23 year old Balinese chicks you see in surf magazines. Almost way too g-damn pretty to bang.....just wanna hang them up on my bedroom wall and stare at them all night. That Benz? Would probably just take center stage in my living room in the same manner.....

One that I let get away.

1963 Roadster.  My neighbor had three, and sold two when he moved from Palo Alto to Hawaii.  He left this one behind as his "driver" when he was over from Kauaii.  He hardly ever came, so he asked me to drive it around every couple of weeks to keep it all going.  So much fun.  Finally he decided to sell about 15 years ago, and asked me if I would like it for $10k.

Like an idiot I said no.  I regret that maniac decision every day.

International Harvester # 14 in my life (and Traveler number 4). Big fun bouncing around my 'hood down here in Baja----except for the gearing in this one. 3:07's with the TorqueFlite 3 speed and the 304 v-8. Absolutely useless on the trails until you put the t-case in Low. But on the other hand.....she was one of few Internationals that could do 90 on the freeway.....

It’s a good thing it’s a convertible because the windows, heater, and AC will stop working.  I think that’s a a lot for that car.
When they are working they are great, safe, and a lot of car for the money. I bought a ‘cherry’ 9000 for my daughter for $8,000 and I think I quickly put $8,000 into it. The last big repair the garage I bought it from (specialist in Volvo and and Saab)  said it was on him he felt so bad.

A cheap convertible that's fairly reliable and cheap to fix?

Miata.

They are cute and there seem to be plenty around for not too much, but they only accommodate dwarves (or little people, I hear they prefer being called that) with the top up. I rode around in my cousin's a while back and it was surprisingly zippy for a chick car, but sooner or later I'd surely get stuck in the rain and have to put the top up.

Surprisingly, I fit into that TT (6'2"/ 230 lbs) just fine, except it was a struggle standing up from that low height.

Probably a lot more if you had all the old systems flushed and engine tested and rebuilt if required.  Same for trans and other running gear.  But that's a lot of dough, unless you have the skills, time and cash available to do it your self.

I'm 66 years old.   I still enjoy driving my Miata with the top down - as long as it's over 50F.  It makes the drive to the boat part of the fun of going sailing.

As I look out the window at the snow-covered fields (yes, it is late April) I am enjoying looking at pictures of convertibles.  Cheers to anyone that lives somewhere that even thinking about having a car with no roof (for other than maybe 2 days a year) makes sense.

Well, yeah, I can see how that, parked on the 405 next to a low rider boombox car on a smoggy summer day might lose it's appeal after awhile. ;) You shoulda brought it out downeast for a springtime coastal drive sometime.

I sold it to a lady who wadded up her boyfriends exact car/color on the Golden Gate Bridge while he was out of town on a business trip.  I think her plan was to park mine in the garage and call it good.  Ha ha...  I always wondered how that worked out.

She paid cash though, and sent a trailer to pick it up the next day.

A guy in North Van built a Toyota powered version years ago - very accurate replica.

I sat in one and the top of the windshied was about the level of my nose. The foot box was so tight I'd have to have driven it barefoot or I'd hit the brakes on every shift.

A 4 wheel motorcycle.

girlfriend had an '85 mustang with the 302 that was fun to drive, can pick them up pretty cheap, easy to fix up, and don't have to worry about finding parts

Except.....life's too short to die in a fugly car. And those were some of the fugliest cars ever built----just ask James Dean.....

:)

That's the trouble with contemporary cars - they're so much alike if you can't read the label you can't tell what it is.

I've been a gearhead for 60 years and I find lots of cars that remain anonymous even after considerable study.

Everybody knows what this is.

Your misconception only deprives you of an amazing drive.  I feel very sorry for you.

Cars, like women.....are 'sposed to be attractive. I'd rather get caught being inside of Amy Shumer instead of that.....thing. Wetf it is......

That exhaust system looks like a 100% leg burner.

You're gonna have to join this F/Book group to learn more. (I'm halfway thru a 30 day timeout---again---so I can't see much. But it's apparently a kit car. It's also apparently like the bitchinest fuking roadster I've ever seen (an authentic '66 Ferrari California Spider being the exception).

Not sure..but it could be a re-fabbed 800 series. Or if the front windshield has hinges, possibly a first Gen 80, built from 1960 to the middle of 1961. I can't tell on phone....and at the time I saw her cruising around So Cal.....window hinges were like the last thing on my mind.....
