I am sad to hear about your health issues ED, hope you are doing ok.  The above is exactly why I have no time for AJ. When the observation is more applicable to the defence, I think you've answer

As I think this over, it occurs that US politics are needlessly complex. In a nutshell, you either lap up AJ's drool and spittle, or ... you're a Nazi. Simple stuff really.

I kind of like you even if you are a crabby old dude.

Since you feel obligated to call out stuff, I feel, against my better judgement to do a little calling out myself.

You, @Gissie, @Fah Kiew Tu, and @LB 15 really have a hardon for old AJ.  Y'all have gone way beyond the good natured insults and harassment and even the general air of disgust and disdain that often happens here.  It seems to me that you folks are full of genuine hatred and I am trying to think of a good reason why grown adults from various parts of the world (interestingly most of them from down under) can express such vile hatred on the internet to somebody that they don't even know.

The main defense appears to be that AJ is a narcissistic, socialist asshole that says stupid thing and by golly that's just wrong.  So you and your mentally impaired cavalry need to charge in and rescue everybody by 'calling out' AJ and showing him his place.  It fucking comical and it's fucking sick.  And the ole communist AJ is like the proverbial Weeble that wobbles but he won't fall down.

The funniest thing is that AJ and I both are here with our real names while the hate squad, full of themselves and their obvious superiority hide like a bunch of cowards behind fake names.  On of your crew even suggested that AJ and I are the same person!  That's fucking hilarious considering that we both post under our real names and it's quite easy to prove that I live in Poland and he lives in Ohio, even if I used to live about 100 miles or so from where he lives.  An anonymous, spineless coward suggesting AJ and I are same person.  That's so far beyond ironic, it's just utter stupidity.  Your side really needs t5o up your game if that's the best you've got.   Most people probably know who LB is but the rest of you eunuchs are fucking cowards.

What the hell is wrong with your pitiful lives that you have so much time to express your angry, bitter opinions and feel such a need to tear down AJ.  Maybe he's an asshole, maybe he's a nice guy, maybe he's a bit of both like most of us.  But he is apparently perfectly capable of absorbing your abuse and just annoying the shit out of you pitiful people.  I've noticed over the years that the crew from the south of the Equator are particularly vicious, angry and bitter while all the while claiming how wonderful their lives are in their antipodal paradise.  There' s a bit of cognitive dissonance there for me.  Maybe it's a COVID thing, but I don't think so because many of the same actors in this drama were pulling the same shit long before COVID.

I'm going to say this as an empathetic, compassionate person.  I would be happy to have a drink with you Crab, the others I'm not so sure.  but here's my view, take it as you will.  Maybe some deep introspection would help y'all to figure out just why in the hell some old, retired Vet in Ohio is touching so many raw nerves in you folks.  Are your lives really that miserable and impoverished that you have nothing better to do than to spew hate and anger at a guy that you hardly know?  Why AJ?  He is on to something to provoke such a reaction form you folks.  This place is full of assholes.  Why the need to 'call him out' and 'put him in his place'?

I've been on this site for some years and seen and been involved in some epic shit fights here.  But this one really puzzles me.  When the attackers are so desperate that they look into a guy's background and criticize him for teaching at a small Ohio liberal arts college and sailing on 'a little puddle' there's is something quite wrong.  If that's the best you've got, you lost this one a long time ago.  Yet it continues, repeating the same childish, idiotic insults over and over.  It's pitiful really.  Look on Ebay, Amazon, Ali Baba, somewhere. I'm sure there are real lives available somewhere online, You can get everything else there.  Just remember you get what you pay for and try to buy at least a mid range one, this isn't the kind of thing to cheap out on a sketchy Chinese imitation product.

Good fucking luck, I'm embarrassed for you guys because apparently there is no bar to low for y'all to stoop under in your irrational, embarrassing, pitiful fight that you are clearly losing.

Just my 2 cents.  I don't even know why I'm commenting on it, I'm here struggling to just stay alive.  I guess that's my legacy to SA to 'call out' you mother fuckers, because you know, somebody has to do it.  You can attack me, you can ignore me, you can do whatever, I don't give a shit.  I have bigger fish to fry right now, a bunch of impotent little minnows are the least of my worries.

I fart in your general direction!

I do have a vague memory of making that comment, I forgot who it was directed at but I meant it in the spirit of the comment, but I doubt I could easily kill anyone for any reason.  It wasn't you was it?

I too am only human and I have a temper.  I worked on it for years and believe me, I have tamed it considerably.  The main motivation is that I feared that I would actually really hurt of kill somebody in an impulsive fury and I didn't want to carry that burden with me so I changed.  It was hard work and it's easier now but I still keep trying to improve.

I understand what you're saying, but let's be real.  There are far more important thing to be outraged about in today's world don't ya think?  I have  a lot of time but limited energy and I'm already pissed that I decided to inject myself in this situation.  I hadn't planned on responding to any comments on my little rant but I decided to be polite and respond rationally and calm because it's the right thing to do.

I truly believe that as humans in a society we have an obligation to continue to improve ourselves and be the best person we can be.  It's a never ending process in my opinion, and I will strive to be better until I draw my last breath.  We have very little control in our lives and anybody that thinks otherwise is delusional in my opinion, they are only fooling themselves.  One of the few things we have some control over is our behavior and interactions with others.  It isn't much, but it's something.  I try hard, I often fail, but I keep on trying.  My wife just told me today,; "You are a very, very good man, but you are difficult."  I think that's as good and accurate description of me as any.

Nice rant Ed, I enjoyed that. Sorry to hear you are not doing well, I would like the chance to try an convince you that a top (bombastic, overblown, opulent) Aus shiraz is as good in the right place as the best Bordeaux.

To answer your questions, a couple of points. AJ gets shot down because he comes across as an egotistical blowhard. He does have a tendency to say xxx is true because I say it, and you should trust me because I'm a professor and a greatly experienced sailor.  And Aussies, by and large, don't do well with the appeal to authority fallacy. Particularly when his authority in academia, or sailing, does appear to be a little lacking...(although it is a fucking big lake, I have to say).

As to the annononimity thing... it's a little overstated. A lot of the Aussies who sail are actually known to other local folk. So while you post under your name, realistically, almost no one on here knows you. But if I am a complete dickhead about something, there are folks here who either know, or can work out, who I am. And I'm a nobody in the sailing scene here - bought a boat off one poster, raced with and against a few, probably been at the same bar as a few more. But I know who LB is, I've checked out FKT's boat (on a sail past) etc. So they are putting themselves behind their posts. To their local peers, if not random internet hackers looking to do a little spear fishing.

So as the boys from TISM said, the reason he's a home boy, might just be because he's a dickhead.

Thanks for your concern, I appreciate it.

Sorry, but I am just not into bombastic, overblown, opulent wines.  I have tried a few and they just aren't in my wheel house.  But I do understand the attraction.  I prefer the fairly restrained power and complexity of a really good, well aged Bordeaux or the elegant delicacy and and hidden power of a good Burgundy.  My wine friend is coming over on Wednesday and i will supply some nice steaks for the grill and he will bring a few bottles of good Bordeaux.  We haven't done that for a while now because of COVID restrictions and border closure but the border is open now so let the party get started!

I still insist that there are a lot of egotistical blowhards here, I've been one on occasion.  I still don't understand why the extreme hate for AJ.  I think he is trolling you guys, he responds without a lot of vitriol with whatever and you guys just get riled up even more.  To me it just feels different than many of the shit fights I have seen here over the years and I wonder what the real reason is.  Very strong reaction usually occur because of other dynamics other than the precipitating event.  I know some here will say BS, that AJ is just full of shit, which he might well be, but I still think there are deeper reasons for the reaction.   I am always very curious about human behavior, it's a fascinating subject.

As far as folks knowing many of the posters here in spite of made up names, I understand that.  However there is still plausible denial as it were should the individual say something truly vile, nobody will find it on an internet search for example, under their real name.  Posting here under your real name forces you to won what you say, come hell or high water.  There is no hiding.  When I gave up my old user name and started to use my real name I did so to try to stop getting so angry and getting involved in some of these shit fights and saying things in the heat of passion and anger.  To me knowing that that was my real name, it tempered the well deserved or not insults and negativity of some of my posts to a point.  If I say something mean now, whether you will ever be in my part of the world or not, I know that I said it and it's out there for anybody in the world to know I said it and also to know who I am although I have a limited internet presence so a Google search of my name doesn't provide very much except a lot of hits for a long ago Russian actress by the name of Lada Edmund Jr.  She had achieved some small fame in the 1960s-1970s.  It's pretty strange that her names are in the reverse order of mine and neither one is a common name.  Apparently in Russian, the word lada has several meanings.  In Polish it is just a surname.

Maybe I'm naïve.  I bought it.  I do see a hint of a dig there, but I don't think it's an overt or subtle accusation of anybody here being a Nazi.  Having lived in and next to Germany for the last 22 years I have met real 3rd Reich Nazis and real neo Nazis and while some of you folks can be a bit reprehensible, I have seen it a that level yet.  I don't think AJ does either.  I think that there's a good chance that in his dotage AJ is just entertaining himself by yanking your chains.  If that's his true motive, it's working well, eh?  I do believe that he believes in a lot of what he says politically, but that's OK.  We are allowed to do that.  I mean come on, he was a sociology professor, what do you expect?

When I was in college back in the 1970s I had a radical fire breathing feminist philosophy professor for an intro to philosophy course.  She had a reputation for being a man hater, men never got good grades from her, etc.  I found her to be intelligent, charming, a good, passionate teacher and I got along fine with her.  I learned a lot in her classes.  Maybe it's all in you approach them, I don't know.

Sorry @Blue CrabI am in complete agreement with AJ on this one.  And I live about 60 miles from Berlin and I am well aware of German politics as well as Polish. I would add the current Polish government to AJ's list.   A few years ago a friend of ours was on the short list to become the head of the majority party in Germany and therefore to be the president of the country.  My wife and I were excited about the idea of actually have the president of Germany to our house, which I'm sure we could have arranged.  Alas, she lost out to a man.

Perhaps you have let your anger and dislike of AJ to cloud your judgement and jump to a hasty conclusion.

Not only did Trump allow the low key simmering racism in the US to come out in the open, it also gave some European countries the green light to amp up their totalitarian, nationalistic far Right agenda with complete impunity.  Of course this trend was happening before Trump, but having such a man at the helm in the US gave the Righties in Poland the confidence to really ramp up their tactics.  They were creaming their jeans with Little Donnie pledging his undying love of Poland and agreeing to significantly expand the US military presence in Poland.  The country can hardly take care of it's citizens and the government was offering to build large bases to get US troops on Polish soil.  I personally could have reaped a pretty good windfall because of my US Army experience and living in Poland.  I was offered a position where my compensation would be 10% of the gross for connecting a medical facility to sign a near exclusive contract to provide local medical care for AUS soldiers.  It literally could have made me rich by Polish standards and well off by US standards.  But I turned it down because I have morals and values that I won't compromise.

So I'm giving this point to AJ, he is spot on and I think if you actually looked into the situation we would all be on the same side of this one.

Heinz Guderian Quote: “New weapons require new tactics. Never put new wine into old bottles.”

Good advice but a few years ago an Indonesian immigrant to the US named Rudy Kurniawan did just that and made millions selling counterfeit wines, particularly rare and expensive Bordeaux and Burgundy.  At the time fine wines of this nature costing up to $10,000 a bottle were quote the rage with the newly minted Russian and Chinese millionaires and billionaires as well as many others with more cash than fine wine knowledge.  And more than a few that should have known better.  He finally got busted, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2013.  He was released in 2020 and was deported  He made so many counterfeit bottles that he almost destroyed the market for those wines because it is sometimes difficult to know what is the real thing and what is fake.  It's kind of like counterfeit cash.  Nobody wants to be stuck holding the fake $50.00 bill so they just pass it on.

I saw a great documentary about that wine scam. Only fat cat who had the balls to go after the counterfeiter was Bill Koch I think.

Victims of Kurniawan's fraud include Bill Koch, who sued Kurniawan in 2009 alleging he sold fake bottles at auction and in private sales—specifically, a 1947 Pétrus, a 1945 Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vielles Vignes and two bottles of 1934 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti that were sold at the first of Kurniawan's two auctions in 2006. Koch and Kurniawan settled out of court in July 2014 for $3 million in damages, and Kurniawan should be completely debriefed regarding his knowledge of counterfeiting in the wine industry

Yeah, I read that Koch spent far more on legal fees than he got in the settlement.  He said he didn't care, it was a matter of principle to him.  He probably didn't even notice the money was gone.  Moral of the story, don't piss off a wine loving billionaire.

Last I knew Kurniawan didn't really give much help to what and how much he counterfeited.

One reason why many people who had some suspicions that maybe Rudy wasn't completely hones was that Kurniawan would host tasting parties and dinners and share real as well as fake wines that many people will never be able to taste.  When somebody is sharing some of the best wines ever made, and asking only that you help him drink it up, you don't ask too many questions.  There is a certain thrill in the exclusivity and decadence of it all.

The counterfeiting of wine is still a big problem.  Many high end restaurants have a policy that they destroy any empty bottles from very expensive wines so counterfeiters don't get ahold of the correct bottle and genuine label to refill with swill.  It can be very difficult to identify a re-corked and sealed bottle, especially if the original cork was in good condition although in 60-to 70 year old bottles, that's not common. So depending on the experience with a particular vintage, they might even never know they were swindled.  I have a collection of empty bottles that would fetch a pretty good price should I desire to sell them.  But I'm not doing it, they are wonderful mementos of drinking the incredible wines they held and I also don't want to contribute to a criminal activity.

Well time to lighten the mood. with a little on topic humour.

What does Angela Merkel do with her old clothes?

She wears them.

So let us look at this joke in the light of the AJ teasing. I think Merkel is one of the great leaders and statesperson of our time. I don't particularly agree with much of her politics, yet I greatly admire her.

I wish absolutely no ill will towards AJ.

He puts his chin out to be hit regularly and clearly enjoys the attention. He is a name calling, bloviatating old blowhard, and thinks that anyone who responds in a negative manner to his posts is a 'Troll'. However I simply find him amusing and he clearly feels the same way about me, as he has been cold posting invitations to me and others to troll him for days.

This is how forums work. A poster writes something and others respond. That is kinda the idea of the place. If you don't like the responses then either flame back (like AJ does) or fuck off somewhere else. Personally I get as much shit put on me as anyone on here. Yes I probably invite much of it but it is water off a ducks back. I just had that fuckwit Jack Sparrow spend 8 months conducting what must be the most vicious personal attack campaign in SA's history on me, my business and my family (thousands of words a day) and all I did was laugh at him. He and AJ became online buddies (the enemy of my enemy is my friend?) and I think the boner the Professor has for me is butthurt over his beasty being punted. But Jack is a truly nasty deranged cunt. AJ is not that by any measure.

Random and I have been putting shit on each other for years and yet I really like the guy. Same with Meli. For leftists they are good people.

This is Sailing Anarchy. As the name suggests if people step over the line the pile on by 'we the people' is the law.

AJ does not come across as particularly good or interesting company, and has a ego the size of his lake, but that doesn't mean I or anyone else on here hates him. I for one would piss on him if his hair was on fire.

Ed I am very sorry and saddened to here of your health issues and wish you all the best. I have always enjoyed you musings on here and long may they continue.

And AJ, when I call you a beardy old Homo, please feel the love behind the words.

And I don't hate AJ, but I do dislike blowhards that refuse to admit mistakes and resort to abuse, bluster and misdirection when called on it.

Due to your obvious love affair with AJ, I have to assume you find that sort of behaviour perfectly normal.

And that's why I'd like to share a bottle of each with you and have the discussion. It is not a zero sum game.

I see your point on the names. I like to keep my social sphere separate from my work one.

Yes we believe so. His Jack Sparrow account has gone dark and his sock ‘plan covid abnormal’ was nuked along with all its posts. His Bitter Fijian sock is around but keeping his head down. He passed on a couple of messages from Jack (he communicates with him using an ouija board presumably) and according to Jack ‘this’ (whatever this is) is far from over.

So far I have not heard from his Eagle street Law firm, their process server, AMSA. OMC, AMU, AS, my local member, the Australian Federal Police, SA moderators or his potty mouthed daughter.

So all good so far.

Where I come from, if you make as assertion about how someone "comes across" you are expected to back it up with some sort of evidence.

Since we have never met, the only way you could offer proof is by reference to what I have written.

Got some of that Eva Dense ??

Didn't think so.

If that is "egotistical" for me to write, I plead guilty.

Hmmm

Given that there is no objective measure of whether someone is a blowhard, I think it is obvious (or at least strongly implied, and recognised by those not hard of thinking) that I was expressing an opinion. I'm pretty comfortable that I don't need to provide evidence to support my own opinion. I have no evidence to back up my opinion that a good Aussie Shiraz is as good as good bordeaux, yet I can still hold that opinion.

Now I may have reasons for an opinion - in the case of wine I like the fuller fruit and secondary flavours from shiraz as a complement to full flavoured meats.

In the case of my opinion that you are a blowhard, let me just refer to the one post of yours I'm quoting here.

First, as stated, you mischaracterise an opinion as something more. Then you state "where I come from" - which is an implied appeal to the authority of your background (See "appeal to authority" fallacy). You follow that with what purports to be a question, but as you also immediately supply a response to that question, clearly it was retorical - ie not a question, but rather a lecture from you. You then sign off with an admission that the post was egotistical  (which is the only point in your post that I find myself in agreement with). These, and many many further examples are why I have formed the opinion that you are a blowhard.

So - when LB 15 states that you are a beardy homosexual, it is fair enough that you ask for evidence that there are men willing to have sex with you and that you are able to grow a beard. But when I say that I find you to be a blowhard, you may ask for my reasons, but you really have no position from which argue with my opinion. Indeed, while the plural of anecdote is not evidence, we may find that many people hold a similar opinion. So, based on the posts on this forum, I think that there is evidence to say that the consensus of opinion from Australia, is that you are a blowhard.

I appreciate your civil explanation of you view.

I don't have a love affair with AJ.  Perhaps I do feel some kinship with AJ given that we are from the same part of the US on Lake Erie and share some common interests.  I came of age in the 1960s and was just a year or two too young to be a hippie at the peak of the movement but there was still enough of it left when I had shoulder length hair (hideous!) and wore love beads. I grew up in a blue collar community with a very liberal minded mother that was heavily involved in many cause of the day, civil rights, women's lib, etc.  I absorbed those values and have maintained them to this day.

But like all humans, I am complex and multifaceted.  In spite of the Vietnam war which was winding down, I enlisted in the Army a year after the draft ended.  I served in Germany as a Cold Warrior during my 2 year enlistment.  Twelve years later I enlisted in the Army again for many reasons, not the least of which was that I felt it was a noble cause to serve my country.  My time in the Army were some of the best years of my life.

I agree that I can come on a little strong at times and in person it's even worse because I am an imposing figure, very tall and nowadays a little heavier than I like, but not fat.  I work hard at trying to be not too intimidating, although it can be useful in certain situations.  I attribute some of my more impertinent comments to my passion and my desire for the world to be a better place.  After 65 years of doing many things and seeing many terrible things, while I might appear to be cynical on the surface, I am still an idealistic starry hippie in my heart.  I get frustrated at the general stupidity of the world and sometimes my frustration causes me to act impulsively.  unlike many people my age, I constantly try to get better and I will never stop learning and trying.

If I have learned anything in life it is that almost every person has some good in them.  We often get mistaken impressions of others but if we are patient and listen and observe carefully, we often find a fundamentally good person inside that has a story.  I find that if I close my mouth and listen, set aside my ego and my prejudices that I can learn valuable things from anybody.  The more we learn about others, the more we learn about ourselves and therefore the potential to be a better human increases.  I often say that you can't listen if you are talking.  Of course none of this is easy to do, but not much worthwhile in life is ever easy.

I have had many jobs in my life and often in fields that involved helping people in some kind of distress or pain.  I never made a lot of money but it was always interesting and educational.  I have never experienced more pleasure and satisfaction in my life than when I could helps somebody in distress, physical or emotional, and facilitate some positive influence, large or small and help them feel a little better about themselves and their situation.  I have never had any drug legal or not, or any amount of money, or any other experience that has created the feeling of satisfaction and pleasure that comes from that.  It's the best 'high' ever.  Like any human I have done things I am not proud of.  But I think I have done far more good things and that's what motivates me to get up every morning and put one foot in front of the other with the idea that maybe I can have some positive influence in the world no matter how small, and to keep trying to be a better person.  I think that is the meaning and purpose of our lives.

The fundamental problem of social interactions on the internet is that it is a poor substitute for face to face interaction.  The up side is that you can meet many interesting individuals from all over the world.  Many people have largely substituted actual in person human interaction with the distance and limits of online interaction.  The COVID thing magnified that even more due to the restrictions.  People have limited attention spans online and we rarely get to know much of value about the distant individual we are communicating with.  That's too bad.  Effective and meaningful face to face interaction and communication is difficult enough, the limits of online communication make it even worse.  I would be willing to wager that if you, AJ, myself, and others here sat down somewhere and actually talked face to face we could find some common ground and if we all didn't part as friends, we wouldn't part as enemies either.

I see your point on the names. I like to keep my social sphere separate from my work one.

I'll tell you what.  You grab a few bottles of Penfolds Shiraz and fly up to Berlin and we can go to my German friends house and raid his cellar for some fine Bordeaux.  We'll throw some steaks on the grill, sample the wines, talk about them and just generally have a good time.  I don't think I've ever had a new world style fruit bomb that I have truly enjoyed, and I've had a few of good quality, but who knows, there might be one out there.   We won't run out of wine anyway, my friend and I won't empty his cellar in our lifetimes no matter how hard we try.

As to your last sentence, that's exactly my point.  Before the internet our social sphere and our work sphere often intersected.  As adults, we find most of our friends through our employment because that's where we have the majority of interactions with other people.  This kept us on our best behavior for the most part for that very reason.  Nothing like going to the office on Monday morning after a raucous Saturday night party where you might have been dancing on a table mostly naked, covered in whipped cream with a lampshade on your head and then seeing some of your coworkers that were at the same party.  Being anonymous on the internet allows us to engage in behavior that we wouldn't do in real life and for the most part there are no serious consequences.  There are certain advantages to that but for the most part I do believe that it isn't a good thing.  You often see the phrase 'In real life' on the internet as though the internet is not real.  Online or not, it's all real life and thinking otherwise can lead to inappropriate and possibly dangerous behavior.  It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.

We would certainly no leave enemies, to much energy required. In reality it is unlikely I would turn up to be sure. Over the years I find myself even less tolerant of fools and AJ is definitely a fool. They waste valuable time and emotions that I prefer to use in better ways.

So as long as AJ (plus a few other denizens that inhabit this place) weren't invited I would try and find the time. Interesting conversation doesn't always need to be with friends, just people willing to meet in the middle somewhere.

Sorry for the delay AJ but I had to read thru Ed's life story again.  Get a grip, Ed. This is political stuff. We know your personal stuff.

What we're interested in is your take on Euro politics as you are smack in the middle of it. I've suggested that Ollie could be a part of or supports a Fourth Reich, in the typical Nazi meaning of the term, in a resurgent Germany faced with 20% and growing non-white citizenry that many thought was a bad idea from the jump. He sez there's a German media outlet that implies everything is peaches and honey in modern Germany. My limited resources and gut feeling is that the sweetness is bogus. Your take would be welcome.

Are my posts lies, Ollie? I'd term them conjectures, plus: You've not denied your affiliation with the United Church of Christ, not famous for their teachings of love for America. You continue to beat the dead horse of No Iranian Nukes when none of us knows. You think you have a cute argument about proving negatives that a 5th grader would laugh off. You've made no secret of your Arab preferences. And your stern/harsh bloviating writing style is the kind of thing I associate with fascist/authoritarian/dictatorial/warlike behavior. Of your 8600 posts, I'd bet quite a few reflect the above. A nickel sez we could find an ex-student or two who'd be happy to reflect on your rantings as above, as well.

If it quacks like a duck ...

And which reputation has been damaged? Your posts are your rep here, and buddy, I wouldn't want to defend that crap in court. Your academic rep? Do you have one? How would you measure that for the court? Has it been damaged? Only in your mind, Skipper.

More conjecture: Dunno about you but if I wanted to keep a lowish profile yet still be in an organized movement that opposes its government's policies, I'd call it something innocent, like Vets For Peace, as an example. Or Oath Keepers, or Proud Boys or anything but say, Aggressive Aryans Against America. Even better, I'd create a quixotic diversionary scheme to go into the bright red heart of America where the haters live and stir some shit up with subtext under the No Nuke thing that no one could disagree with.

I'll grant "Jesus in Jackboots" is a little harsh. I just liked the alliteration but if it saves me millions in a libel lawsuit, I'll admit to hyperbole. Your white Jesus is  complete fiction anyway. What I know for a fact is that I am not a member of an organization that the FBI keeps an eye on for domestic terrorist reasons.

So I offered to let this all drop yesterday but you're still rattling your sabre. I think that's a mistake on your part.

I'll tell you what.  You grab a few bottles of Penfolds Shiraz

You need to be careful just saying 'penfolds shiraz, as penfolds have a long tail of overpriced crap in their lower ranges. Don't drink anything below their bin range, and even that is expensive for what it is. What you do get from the lower prices bin wines is a fair certainty that they will age well. Good vintage bin 28, 128 or 138 will improve for 15 to 20 years before hitting it's peak.

Penfolds grange is, in my opinion, way overpriced. I have only tasted 2 vintages, one way to young. Both were nice, but I'd suggest that there are equal wines at 1/4 the price.

To defend the honour of Australian shiraz, I will try and bring 4 wines.

First, a South African RIJKs reserve pinotage. A hybrid grape of pinot noir and shiraz. Leaves you wanting more. Serves as a nice step from the French to Aussie wines.

Then the one that I think will change your mind. A 2003 Penfolds RWT. It's a little more restrained in the Bordeaux style, but still has solid fruit. I had one a month ago with my father and it changed his religion. I have 4 of that vintage left.

Then we have to have a 2010 St Henri. Arguably the best vintage of my personal favourite Aus Shiraz ( and from memory 2010 is a straight shiraz). Balanced, but with some big plum and chocolate flavours. It's really too early to be drinking it, but it's good to check every few years.

Then it's time to go silly with a Binders Bulls blood from '96. Shiraz mataro, which I believe is a Polish style (Lutheran eastern Germany if not Polish). Thick, heavy, overblown plummy flavours. No point drinking more wine after that until your palet recovers.

If I was to be so good as to say what I'd like to try, it would be a well aged buttery Riesling, perhaps with some carpaccio early. Then a nice sauternes after recovering from the bulls blood. Two wines I like, but don't know enough about. Or a chateaux Margeaux :-)

Well then.  I am open minded and willing to try most things.  I will warn you however that hearing anybody say 'plum' and or 'chocolate' flavors in any wine is a trigger for me.  For whatever reason I abhor 'plummy' wines, and in the new world style unfortunately that often appears to be one of the main things I taste.  Chocolate is less common but again, not something I like in my wine.  Now tobacco, leather, a hint of forest floor make me very happy.  But in the interest of international relations I would submit to your selections and bravely try all of them.

My friend might have some Riesling but his cellar is 95% red wines.  But Berlin is only an hour away, I am sure we could scare up a nice bottle or two.  You are in luck with your desire to have a nice Sauternes.  My friend still has a few bottles of Château Rieussec from the early 2000s.  It is much more affordably priced then the legendary and iconic d'Yquem and it is a marvelous wine.  The high acidity is perfectly balanced by the high sugar content and the result is an explosion of tropical fruits and other flavors exploding in the mouth.  No plums in sight. Although it is as viscous as one would expect from a Sauternes, it isn't at all cloying.  Maybe someday I will be lucky enough to taste a nice vintage d'Yquem but the Rieussec is just fine with me until then.

Funny you should mention Château Margaux.  I have at least tried and in many instances consumed multiple bottles of almost all of the famous Bordeaux 1st growth wines of various vintages and ages from 20 years old to 90 years old.  I do believe that Margaux is my absolute favorite.  In my opinion it is the most delicate of all the notable Bordeaux wines but don't think that it doesn't have a backbone.  It reminds me of a good Burgundy, at first sip it's all gentle and pleasant, even ethereal and then as you swallow it, it grabs you by the shirt collar and shakes the shit out of you.  I have drank more Cheval Blanc than any other Bordeaux including the legendary 1947, and the oldest wine I've ever drank, a 1928 Cheval Blanc, a couple of years ago (The color had faded a bit, it tasted very old, but it was drinkable and still tasted like Cheval Blanc.  Pretty amazing considering the age.).  I do love Cheval Blanc and it's my sentimental favorite.  However I think if I could only drink one Bordeaux wine for the rest of my life I would chose the Margaux.  It is truly outstanding in my opinion.  I'm sure my friend would happily open one or two for you.  I am pretty sure he has more of the 1983 and there might be an older one or two yet, like the 1947 in the photo below.

My wife's ancestry is from your area. Probably 2023 at a guess before we make it back there given current issues, but it is planned. Aside from a quick visit to Paris and Berlin, neither if us have spent any real time in northern Europe. So it is planned. I do think the RWT will change your mind on colonial shiraz.

And yes, that is completely shameless, and I do not forgive you. But I am jealous.

If I can stay alive until then it would be a pleasure to meet.  We are only an hour from Berlin.  I would be happy to try the RWT.  My limited experience with Shiraz/Syrah has been favorable, I can see where a good one could be similar to a Bordeaux.  Actually I have heard that back in the day and perhaps even now, some unscrupulous wine makers in France in a bad year would supplement the Bordeaux blends with some Syrah to give them a little oomph.

In other Shiraz news, Shiraz is the fifth-most-populous city of Iran. 1.5M

Folks in Siraz, Iran say they don't have Nukes. Some dude in OH believes them. Israel sez they do and periodically destroys them when found.

Whom to believe?

New guy in US wants to meet Iran's new guy. Per MSN, " When asked about Tehran's ballistic missile program and its support of regional militias, [new guy] Raisi said those issues were "non-negotiable."

I turned to THE fount of all knowledge, Quora, where several just plain folks simply said no they don't. Period. Much like the dude in OH. One answerer commented that they do. Another guy read a book. Yet another asks where I-ran would even get a nuke and someone else mentioned the inventory of missing nukes from the former Soviet Union, Iran's very friendly neighbor and well-known supplier of all things military to Iran. The other guy said, and I quote, "Oh."

So, we've got a complete stalemate: The OH dude and several others with nothing to lose v. the State of Israel with everything to lose. Pretty sure international relations expert Ed Lada of non-nuke Poland would give this point to the dude from OH but I think the other 7 billion of us might think Iranian politicians, believers in God each and everyone, would kill their mamas to wipe those fucking Israelis off the map. Former US SEC State Mike Pompous already has new ME maps printed with no country names awaiting developments, sez NPR's Mary Louise Kelly.

And what if the game is as simple as friends holding Iran's stockpile across a border so Iran can cross its fingers, and say "we don't have any in Iran? Honest."

Our next installment from Shiraz will examine the differences between Iran's god and Israel's god and raise the question: Would mere mortals lie about god and nuclear weapons? What we won't do is use Whataboutism as the bedrock of our coverage. Stay tuned.

The above is exactly why I have no time for AJ. When the observation is more applicable to the defence, I think you've answered your own question.

I note Ed's criticisms haven't resulted in any tit for tat? Because Ed's a decent chap and differences of opinion should be celebrated, not viewed as negative. Ed throws a few insults around and none of us care because why shouldn't he? It's a difference of opinion. I'll happily insult his choices back but amongst the trading of barbs we converse, learning from each other and normally the richer for it.

AJ doesn't want dialogue, he wants a submissive audience. If you get on your soap box and people give you their time and your response is to throw dusters at the class, well some might throw it back.
