I know where I'd be looking.

There are people to deal with all that stuff under the hood (bonnet)

I rebuilt mine, engine and body. The engine is so small I lifted it out by hand, set it on a tire and onto the ground... I called it a go-cart... Rear Suspension would put the fear in God in you while making a tight turn..

I knew a guy who's father flew one of those Spit's in Gibraltar in WW II.

Talk about having a good war - flying the hottest plane, getting all the girls and very low risk area of ops.

So, I am 8 or 9 and shuffled off to grandmas for the day (why me? why so often?) and uncle John living with Grandma has stacks and stacks of Motor Cycle magazines.  So, I saw tat cover once before, and every other cover from about '63.  And I read most of them...  Grandma was kind of boring but she liked to see me reading.

Nope - look at the wings. Hurricanes didn't have elliptical wings.

They sort of do, at least as far as the angle of the photos can tell us.

But they don't have the air scoop behind the prop

Definitely not a Hurricane. It is a Spitfire, but not a “classic” one. It is a variant, there were many. Probably with clipped wings and has a modified forward air scoop. Googling suggests it is a variant used in North Africa/Middle East/Burma. Can’t find any details.
