Now This Is A Whale Of A Tale

Where is Jaws when you need him....

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. —

A veteran Cape Cod, Massachusetts lobster diver is home from the hospital after he says he was swallowed by a humpback whale off the coast of Provincetown early Friday morning.

Michael Packard says his vessel was positioned off Herring Cove Beach, surrounded by a fleet of fishing boats.

Humpback whales are Baleen whales.... Guy must have been awful skinny to slide through that sifter...

And diving for lobster is illegal in Massachusetts.(AFAIK)

You would think that with all the sharks up there this would be a self correcting issue.   Back when Jaws was swimming about doing her thing there was nowhere near the shark density on the Cape that there is now.

Well…the guy may be bullshitting but……..the way the baleen whale feeds is to open its mouth,in rushes water - a lot - and “stuff”, then it closes the mouth and pushes the water out and the baleen - now across the “opening” - strains out the little critters. So, although the throat/esophagus is too small to swallow a person….you could wind up in the mouth.

Sounds a bit bullshitty to me.

The Massachusetts coast offers a great opportunity to hunt for lobsters. You can either use your pots or directly dive into the water to enjoy it a little more.

It's Mass... things are different there!

For those non believers or too frightened to click the link, the guy's story is  entirely plausible.

Balleen whales have swallowed much larger things...

another view...

The baleen sifter is to keep the krill inside the mouth after they have opened wide to fill it first, so no need to slide in, only out...

EDIT, I now see that Point Break already 'splained it.....

Unfortunately, no one can verify the whale species. Probably humpback but possibly finback. No mention of a bubble net, which is the tool some baleen whales use to corral schools of baitfish, then the come up from the bottom in the middle with their mouth open to scoop up the catch. That would be my guess as to what happened, the whale blew it's net and was just coming up when it accidentally ingested the diver near the bottom.

Where's the ubiquitous headmounted GoPro when you really need it?
