It died in in the late 70's early 80's when the format shifted from government mark racing to W/L racing. Change everything about the event and the boats that participated.

With a govt marks navigators class , and a push to get the phrf 3 boats back I think haS helped.

It’s nice to finally see some well sailed J29s lead their fleet at this event.

Jackie and the GBSA All-Stars setting up a nice picket fence. Nice work gang. Good to see Dirty Harry up front.

Boondoggle was immediately behind XLR8 rounding the second windward mark. XLR8 began launching their spinnaker before the mark and the spinnaker was partially in the water and draped over the windward mark, making full contact with the mark. We were 10 feet behind them and it was totally clear. We immediately told them and told them protest. They acknowledged and said they didn’t hit the mark.

I guess their memory improved...

30% SCP accepted by XLR8

Ha Ha

After there win this year, they will only have to win Block 9 more times to equal that poorly sailed J29s record of Hustler.

The sailmaker for for Dirty Harry has a shot at cracking 100 points on the boat he's sailing on.

None of the top J44s are there this week
Phrf 1 is up for grabs
Lots of rating protests among boats 50-60 point out of a podium finish going into the last day in ORC C
One was upheld.

A Ker 40+ racing PHRF with a handful of pros on boat and not able to beat up their competition.
Priceless

Perhaps they have old sails?
There is only 85 phrf rating points spread in that div.
And only six points separate the top 5 places.
Close racing! Exciting day 5!

Makes sense.

Flying Jenny has an ORC rating due to non class sails.  Fortissimo's rating might be questionable based on stock sails or something.

Peacemaker, well rumor was it was measured years ago and moved over to ORC without a new measurement. Stick a 4300lb boat that crushes everyone against 14000lb boats and things get interesting. No one likes that boat for that reason apparently.

The whole what classes boats sail in is getting ridiculous. Phrf, Performance Cruising, etc.  Mine as well have an IRC Party at Block too.

1100 and  racing has already been canceled.  Its over.  The ferries and party win.  Many unhappy and grumbling sailors on the dock.
So  only 3 days racing.  Maybe it will be dead in 2023?  Back to Key West!

You mean to tell me 100 points won't get cracked in some divisions?

Looks like I picked a good year to skip  this one. seven, six and five races across all divs in five days ouch. There should be a thread of BIRW stories from 40,30,20, years ago, To celebrate this amazing week long regatta and partying spectacular. There are lots of sailors here that we’re there back then. Share some fun and positive stuff. I’m tired of the bitching and moaning about ratings, ORC sails and pros. How about some positive BIRW fun we all experienced.

Ok I’ll start. Who remembers why you wrap a hamster in duct tape?
the Airline TWA was BIRW sponsor one year, what happened to the banner and how was it altered and what boat displayed the banner on the balcony of their house?
scratching the surface here this just one boats antics there is sooo much more.

Playing hide the hamster is not funny.

What year did Appleton Rum sponsor the event?

Who was the skipper who accidently bleached his STC polo shirt and turned it purple.... and when pressed about it at the head of Champlain's dock stated, "Your shirts are all nice, but this one shines!"

What was the last year you could anchor out just off of Paynes', BIBW and Champlains'?

Who was the Duty Officer in the 70's?
hint, "Now hear this. now hear this, will the young lady who lost her panties in the cemetery please come to the Duty Office."
And something about stealing a horse.......

What maxi boat got stuck in the channel off the USCG station forcing the RC to postpone the start for all divisions?

Does he keep the watch? Or give it to the pro?

Based on there performance  the 2 regatta's in Newport prior to Block, the Pro should get the watch.

Were they giving out Casio's this year?

Remember Mount Gay rented armored truck and police escort to deliver rum to Champlains in 1977? Nobody had heard of it before that party but everybody remembered it next day
