Borax Johnson 107
Fkuc me. I bought the wrong iPad - it doesn't have the GPS chip - Fkcu Tim Cook. Save $3.09 per unit in the Uyghur concentration camps and rape factories?!? So, what is the best aftermarket GPS (bluetooth?) device to buy? Thanks.
Mulligan 49
I loved my Bad Elf Bluetooth GPS, before I got my cellular iPad. I may just get another for backup!
Mulligan 49
One really cool thing about it is that you can connect several BlueTooth devices at once. It’s battery lasts a long time, and it doesn’t chew up as much battery on the iPad.
knurd 8
+1 for bad elf. I'm using the same setup, an old ipad mini paired with a bad elf gps. I've had no problems with the combination.
Ruminator 156
Another vote for the Bad Elf. A solid piece of gear for years onboard.
CutterCaptain 6
I too used the Bad Elf until I installed an AIS transponder that has Wifi (the Vesper XB8000.) Shows not just AIS targets, but GPS and NMEA data even on an ancient iPad2 running iNavX.
Slim 129
I also use the Bad Elf. Works with my iPad, my iPhone, and a windows PC running OpenCpn.
SEC16518 114
I've used a small Garmin handheld that connects via Bluetooth to the iPad......works great for the Navionics app.
dacapo 1,571
I use the DUAL multipurpose. Less expensive, and just as capable.

I used mine for point to point racing. I was able to leave mine plugged into ship’s power and leave the unit down below. But, you can’t do that on carbon boats, as the signal won’t go through! The Bad Elf also has a small lcd display, giving speed and cog.
Hike, Bitches! 353
I also used the Dual GPS (marine version, it was white, not sure any other difference), until I went a similar route as @CutterCaptain and got a Quark AIS/GPS/Seatalk/NMEA/WiFi combo box. But the Dual is still in the iPad bag in case I go somewhere else.

I’m running a 9” IPad brightness is on full, the gps and wifi are on (connection to Furuno radar, works great) and it is a battery hog. I might go to an IPad mini and perhaps a bad elf to use less power. I assume a mini is less power dependent. We had a lot of fog on our June cruise and wouldn’t of cruised on schedule without this stuff.
