Ventucky Red 1,102
Cable provider notified me that I should upgrade to the DOCSIS 3.1 modem and provided me a list of units to pick from or rent theirs. I am inclined to buy my own and looking at some of the units out there the new set up is modem and router in the same unit. I have used Netgear from the start, and I am looking at the Orbi. https://www.netgear.com/home/wifi/mesh/cbk752/?cid=us-run-rates-srch-cpc&utm_source=shopping&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=us-run-rates-shopping-cpc Anyone here have this or a recommendation on something better? IStream 3,415
FWIW, I just retired an one year old Arris SB8200 modem. No wifi, but it's a good performer: https://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboard-Approved-SB8200-Frustration/dp/B07DY16W2Z/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=arris+sb8200&qid=1629590237&sr=8-3 I just switched to fiber and was going to put it up on CL but if you're interested PM me and I'll give you an SA deal. ExOmo 177
You might consider getting a separate modem and router. Just gives you some flexibility. It is my understanding that unless you have a very fast connection, then you may not benefit that much from wifi 6 and it certainly costs more at this time.

LionessRacing 669
Anyone up to speed on “MoCA” bridges ? just learned that my Internet/cable provider installed one, off the Modem to the house coax network. the “cable box” gets its “network” connection over the bridge, apparently multiplexed along with the digital cable signals. as I understand, I can put similar bridges at various points in house, and connect my Apple airport 801.11ac Wifi gear, extending the network by wires rather than propagation through house. I would expect to get much better speed across house (three story, 5 k ft^2) are all brands compatible ? Is gen 2.5 back compatible to gen 2?

Not only higher speed than 802.11ac, but more reliably. MOCA has a certification and interoperability program, so all brands should work together. Don’t know for sure about back compatibility, but would be very surprised to find out that it isn’t. Go for it.

rockb 30
My experience with Mediacom is if you have your own modem and there is a problem they always say their system is working fine, the problem is with your equipment. If you rent a modem from them and there is a problem at least you can plug 1 computer directly into their modem and if the problem persists you can prove it is their problem not yours. Hike, Bitches! 353
I have been running the Netgear Orbi CBR40, with one satellite for a few years. It is still technically a hub/spoke style "mesh" network, but the repeaters talk to the main router on their own frequency band so it isn't piggybacking off your wifi frequency. I still don't get as much 'range' outside as I would like, but I haven't hooked up one of their outside satellites yet. The other nice thing is one network name...I tried at $35 repeater once, and it was a PITA to switch between networks. The Orbi seems pretty seamless hopping between the router & satellite. The connection is good enough for all my IoT's to get a connection.
P_Wop 3,413
My own view (FWIW), having cabled several homes, is to install the modem and/or router where the external signal arrives in your property, then immediately after it install a 24 or 48-port secure gigabit switch. They aren't expensive. Then you run one or two Cat 6 cable spans to each room (excluding bathrooms of course). This was easy in my last big home as it was built on a hillside and hade huge void areas underneath. YMMV. If you want WiFi, a cheap and cheerful Wifi transceiver on each floor or building should be fine - just tune each to a different channel. You can also plug in a small 8-port GB switch if there are more wired users or devices in a room (TV, Roku, etc...). If you want the highest speed for your porn habit, just plug in a local patch cable.

If you're into that, or tortoise porn, just stick with dialup. 14.4 should be plenty.

My last house (2003) I had them do a double Cat 5 run to each cable box in the bedrooms LR, etc. outlet that terminated in the garage. That ended up being really nice and I used it for all kinds of stuff, but I never needed to hardwire routers together though.

Finally just bit the bullet and ran cat5 downstairs and into the bedrooms. $$$ but with everyone moving in, 4 of us now, and at least 2 devices running between us at all times most times 6-7 streaming etc.. It was the only solution as I WFH and my connection speeds were going into the shitter. ...
