British to Return to Imperial System?

Recommended Posts

They have a Conservative government - what did you expect?

Tories are salivating at having "Imperial" back in everyday use.

Stupid fuckers.

Even before this and Brexit, the currency has always been pounds sterling, not euros, all the road signs are still in miles, not kilometres and speed limits are still all mph, not kph. Kilos and grams still struggle against pounds and ounces.

The Brits never really took the metric system seriously… I worked there for over thirty years as an architect and you had to be bilingual when it came to all of this. My English wife of over 40 years still needs me to translate. Nice to know I still am at least one use to her…

It will stimulate the economy no end.

Heaps of IT work, bigger than Y2K.

So retailers who chose not to change, will they be unpatriotic?

IIRC Anything that came from British Leyland, or Morris Garage, came with it's own tool kit, because SAE and Metric just wouldn't do.....

Seems I recall a copper mallet being provided for removing the hubcap on the wheels.... Maybe the Healy Elliot.....

At least they decimalized Sterling.

When I lived there they were just getting rid of farthings - 1/4 of a penny.

Lefty - a jar of this costs a Guinea.

Ah yes! That's the stuff!

When I lived there a Mr. Softy ice cream cone was 12P If you wanted it dipped it was another penny. If you wanted sprinkles it was a hay-penny more.

A double cone with chocolate dip, and sprinkles was 25P.

Back then you still got King George VI shillings in change, but never in a bank. That was when the new half quid and quid coins came out.... They were very cool.

Yes, 3 45/64" is so much more logical than 3.7".

Tenths of a foot? Common in engineering. Sailmaking too.

Anything but that socialist Metric system.

I mean... it was invented by the French FFS.

Some unusual conversion factors.

1 million microphones = 1 phone
1 million phones = 1 megaphone
1 million microgrids = 1 grid
1 trillion pins = 1 terrapin

And of course the standard unit of beauty is one millihelen, enough to launch one ship.

To be strictly SI complaint that would be 454 grams. You weren't supposed to use decimal parts of larger units, so the exist is 500 m away, not 0.5 km. I think that is close to two furlongs.

Not my thing, but I understand that legal cannabis is sold by the ounce in Canada. I suppose that avoids the awkwardness of someone who wants a entire kilogram of hash?
