The Laser Class seeks new leadership!!

Recommended Posts

Their annual meeting was held via Zoom on October 30.  Per this Microsoft Word - TLC AGM Invitation & Chairmans message 2021.docx (thelaserclass.com) they need a new Chairman and Exec Secretary as the incumbents both stepped down.  Among the reasons given is the "challenging relationship with our boat builder." (!!!)  If LP cannot get along with the people trying to salvage their brand/boat/class, they apparently cannot get along with anybody at all.   Wonder what happened at the meeting?

Now that's a bit unfair.

I'm sure they do find the situation very complicated to describe appropriately and that they are finding it very challenging to write up.  I think i would too if I were in their position and needed to phrase an account that presented the situation in a fashion that LP senior management would find acceptable.

Let’s see who gets finished first.

* The Guys writing up the Laser Class meeting minutes

* the guys writing up the Constitutional amendments necessary to allow the ILCA to be a class legal toy

* Pete Rose getting inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame

* Elvis and Selina singing an album of Duets

Very true .

I think it will take a copywriting genius to square that circle :D

Very nearly posted a long diatribe about politics and the good it CAN do. Then remembered where I was posting :D.

So onwards and upwards and let’s get back to ‘ RIP The Laser Class ‘ .

As a young man I was working with a UK civil servant. He gave me one bit of advice, 'always offer to write the minutes, even if you don't win in the meeting you can win afterwards. No one will read them at the time, and if they ever need to it will be too late for them '.

Politics has the power to turn anything to shit. Change my mind.

Our wonderful little game has prospered when those building the toys and organizing the play have been driven by a desire to put more butts on boats and have worked tirelessly to accomplish that.

The  game has and always will suffer when people focus their energy and squander assetts  on control issues.

The Laser Class deserves to die for the same reason the ILCA should have been disbanded years ago, and action was necessary to extract the game from the clutches of a foolish trademark owner.

The absolute ONLY reason anyone needs to be “in charge” of anything related to sailboat racing is to allow that person the freedom to accomplish the necessary work.

I could write a novel trying to explain the previous paragraph.

Here are the minutes of the recent AGM of The Laser Class.

The 2021 Annual Meeting
The 2nd Annual General Meeting was held via Zoom on 30 October 2021. Chairman Beat Heinz and Executive Secretary Andreas Doring reported that The Laser Class (TLC) faced a challenging year, particularly due to the MNAs’ and ILCA’s efforts to not allow any events to take place and the limitations posed by the Covid 19 pandemic, resulting in all events being cancelled or postponed.  The webinars organized were well received and attended. The finance report showed 10,886.50 euros in open payables. Membership has grown from 986 before the previous AGM to 1107 members to date from 59 countries. The biggest TLC member countries are from the Italy (300), United Kingdom (197), and Netherlands (99).
Laser Builder, LaserPerformance Lda, noted that TLC was able to organize itself, prepare a constitution, put up a website and initiate social media activities in record time.  Membership has increased, strengthening the Class.  The Builder remains a strong supporter of TLC and, as event sponsor, commits itself to support events in 2022.  Manufacturing stopped in August as LaserPerformance moved its Laser manufacturing from the U.K. to LaserPerformance Lda in Setubal, Portugal.  Manufacturing has now resumed and backorders are now being fulfilled. Logistics remains a challenge.  Demand for Lasers remains robust and next year LaserPerformance has forecasted a growth in its manufacturing and distribution of Lasers.
Technical Officer Charles Campion was unable to attend due to being delayed traveling back to the UK.  He was visiting the Builder, LaserPerformance Lda, in Portugal to inspect and sail the Laser manufactured at the Setubal facility.  Charles has also drafted new Class Rules, following World Sailing format, which will be finalized before the end of 2021.  A vote of thanks to Charles for all his efforts.
The following members chose not to run for the 2021/22 Board:
Beat Heinz
Monica Azon
Andreas Doring

The following members were nominated and elected to the 2021/22 Board:
Andre Gray
Phil Peron

Charles Campion will continue as Technical Officer and Bahman Kia will represent the Builder.
Participants thanked Beat and Andreas for the exceptional work and efforts undertaken under challenging circumstances.  Heini Wellmann was also thanked for the leadership he provided during the formation of the Class.
Next year’s annual meeting will be held in conjunction with one of the Laser events in Europe.

Where was TLC's funding coming from again?  Plaque sales?  Interesting to see how long it takes them to pay that 10K in bills

Maybe that British show LP was on recently will be showing up at TLC HQ soon looking for some dough.

So another new company. Laser Performance Euurope (UK based) fell by the wayside some years ago and Laser Performance LLC (US) became a builder, and now it seems everything is transferred to Portugal.

Is TLC really holding on to the WS dream? Good God. And once they actually start charging for memberships, what is the over/under on how many members there will be? 250?

Charles has also drafted new Class Rules

This caught my eye. Must be a tough one to write, so that they don't breach the ILCA copyright, don't refer to the build manual while still ensuring that the rules make the boats the same as other "Lasers". Writing WS compliant rules is pretty easy - they have templates - so normally its just a pain in the arse rather than anything else, but this is another story. I wonder who is paying Charles to do this and how much is being spent on legal advise.

I would have thought it was quite easy. The template drives the content and format of it, so my similarity to ILCA rules is unavoidable, and anyway copyright of ILCA class rules would belong tomWS not ILCA I assume?

TLC keeps sending me emails, but really I don't need any sanctioning body to do the club racing I do. I cannot speak for people who want to compete at a higher level, but I have to think ILCA is the future.

The ILCA rules are marked © ILCA. As World sailing appear very determinedly anti TLC too, I don't suppose they'll be significantly more co-operative than ILCA.

ISTR reusing the ILCA drawings was the biggest issue before, but World Sailing retain copyright on the rules template. If they were to withdraw permission to use it - if indeed they can - then it might be interesing.

Charles Campion appears to be a directory of "Sail and Sport" Ltd, who, it seems, are a LP reseller based a couple of miles from the LP place at Long Buckby.  According to Companies House website, when Sail and Sport was set up two other shareholders were Simon Ogden and Dan Slater, who are both, according to Linkedin, currently LP LLC execs, but both are recorded as having ceased to have significant control the day after the company was incorporated. The implications of all that are beyond me.

Wonder how many of these TLC members are also ILCA members?
