I found this old depiction of a J105 Leeward mark rounding, it's not too bad

Its bad when some illustrator has no idea how a sailingboat really looks but its even worse when the yacht designer dosnt.

Wow, that is bad as a standalone, but wait, there's more: Bonus points for the fact that this is the cover of the 2020 official annual report of the US sailing body. It is a pretty good exam

It is a pretty good example how far sport apparatchiks can be estranged from the sport they pretend to serve.

Looks to me like someone made a Blooper.

You have a point... but in fairness to meself, I didn't consider it because who even thinks about Ozzy rugby these days?  The announcer on Saturday said your #9 was "playing like Gregan," and I had to agree - he moved like a 49 year old who retired after  one too many serious injuries.  But seriously, that England loss Saturday was one of the most boring, godawful and horrible things my wife has forced me to sit through in years, and not only because England was playing.  But don't feel bad, LB.  It could be worse for you.  You could be a Kiwi and wondering how a very young Ireland team beat the bejeezus out of the All Black & Blues as if they were Conor Macgregor in a comeback fight.  And your bumblebees or whatever they are called managed to beat the entertaining, classy and sportsmanlike 'boks twice this year, so there's that.

As for Ozzy sailing... not going to comment on it, I know just enough to get my ass kicked by all the funny talkers around here.

The legendry Mark Ella was recently asked how his all conquering Wallabies side from 1984 would go if they played against todays Wallabies side. When he replied 'we would beat them by about 5 points' the interviewer asked why such a close game. Ella replied 'We are all in our mid 60's now.'

I kid you not. This, um, painting is titled "SAILBOAT SAILING SHIP IN OCEAN AT SEA STORM." And no, that is not a typo.

I never knew those old square riggers could surf.

How come the helmsman in the first one stands in the middle of the wheel like a clueless nubie?

the driver's on his way down to leeward to keep an eye on the weather mark
+ the foredeck is heading forward for the upcoming spinnaker hoist,
but as there doesn't seem to be a pole to weather or bowsprit visible,
he's probably dashing in embarrassment to bring the pole up from the
other side...

it's always the foredeck's fault...

there is a perfect explanation for. He is clearly testing out a new free flying jib, and the tack line clutch slipped just as this photo was taken.

But.. but..

I have had this book on my shelves for 40 years and the front cover pic has been bugging me the entire time. Why would their hair be blowing backwards on a dead run? Huh?

Fuck you Norths!

Looks like one of the most adventurous thing on earth;  wave surfing with a monohull.
Can be dangerous as well.

That’s what our place looked like after Laura blew through.  How most of the trees withstood it is a mystery to me.

Those look like pine trees, which are the opposite of "deep roots and flexible above the ground." They often twist and the trunk snaps anywhere from 1/4 to 25/27ths of the way up.

Now gum trees and birch tree, those are some flexy mofos.

We have sweet guns and a very few oaks mixed in.  The biggest protection is the a very large wind break jsut to the north of our home (The man who built that home hated neighbors) and the west which is higher and covered with trees.

To backup your thoughts, and Black Sox, When we drove eastward on Interstate 10 though the devastation of Michael, there was huge acreages of pine that were broken off about fifteen feet off of the ground.  Just as if a giant lawnmower came along and mowed the tops off of the pines

If someone is going to stylize sailing in a painting or drawing, is it too much to ask that they do a bare minimum of research so it doesn't look ridiculous? This is from US SAILING, for chrisakes! The main is weird enough but WTF is up with that headsail? Tell us about this hot new panel layout! Nice luff tension, bro! Mainsheet eased but headsail strapped in. Does anybody look at these things before giving the go-ahead for publishing?

Nothing says "I'm completely out of touch" quite like that... That's painful.

Just rememberd to this. Was a present from some non sailors for me. Has some interesting concepts.

grafik.thumb.png.af84feebb89c528cbd729102aa8f8022.png

The two front sails are placed so close together so that some Hypersonic edge streams can develop inbetween.

And on the other side we can see some new interesting sheeting.

grafik.thumb.png.e1bf675b680a5dd537fb20fd083f3a0c.png

Using the foresheet straight as a shroud is genius. If a gust comes you will have almost instant more rig pressure.

Truely a scale model of a next gen racer.

Ugh! Sailing gifts from non-sailors are pretty much universally horrible.

I remember a model Arabic dhow where the hull was shaped from a solid block of wood using a band-saw. The chines which resulted from the sawing were slightly rounded by sanding. The portholes were made from shoelace eyelets. Ugh!

That boat (red one with the artist) looks suspiciously like the the one used on the cover of one of the endless free magazines I get at work.  Not sure what it is.  There is no credit in the magazine.

Not sure I get the wave action and turbulence depicted as the boat appears fairly close hauled on starboard in relatively benign conditions upwind.  Sails are actually trimmed.  Maybe there is a waterfall just to leeward.  Probably a combination of pics put together.

This magazine is published by Putnam Media in the Chicago area.  Maybe someone there is a sailor.

I don't understand how she could observe and get this little detail correct, and get everything else on the other side of "not even wrong." Her "sailboat" doesn't even have a mast FFS!

That’s the 2nd Elvestrom logo in an awkward advertising campaign this week. The Ed had that blue boat in the what is it? thread.

Poor guys aren’t going to sell many sails if there are any more abominations sporting their moniker…

You've never seen so many first class paintings by well known painters in your life,
Norway is rich and has good taste and art knowledge.
By the way the scream is one of 5, By Edward Munch.
