Kenichi Hori is gearing up to do it again.

Apparently Kenichi-San, at age 83 is planning a west-coast-USA (San Francisco) to Osaka  run in another 19 foot boat. You may recall that Mermaid, the 19 foot plywood boat that he sailed from Japan to San Francisco in 1962..

Well, Kenichi-san is back with a new 19 footer, Suntory Mermaid III, rather more sophisticated than  his first Mermaid.  This site is in Japanese but it has drawings of the boat.

I have to say, I'm more interested in this than in the hottest new foiling multimillion dollar 60-footer.

Seeing Endangered Species around here, it’s nice to see Kenichi-San keeping the flame bright.

Thanks for posting this.

I can't help but be way more impressed with this design, than that of the similarly dimensioned G580. I realise one is for home completion, but still....... They are very simplistic and agricultural.

Suntory Mermaid could IMO benefit from a rig rethink, which looks absolutely so unevolved with its size, placing and lost opportunities, compared to the nice job done with the hull.

Double rudders for redundancy and lose the Porcelain throne! (Or is that a Japanese cultural thing......?)

Good luck to Kenichi.

Impressive guy - definitely has a huge pair.

Re the rig rethink - one of models shows a spin pole? That can't be right. Not only would you think an assy provides more flexibility, but jeez an 83 yr-old is going to clamber around on deck to gybe the pole?
