If the boat is not Australian - the article says there was no identifiable registration for the Police to track down, so it may have come from abroad -  perhaps the skipper jumped ship when he found out over the radio (which the article says was on) how much he'd be fined for not reporting in to Customs ahead of time?  If he'd reported in, they'd have identified the boat by now.

definitely a discrepancy on what is considered a yacht between here and there

Australians (particularly non sailors) call anything with a sail a yacht - down to, and including dinghys. Big motor boats are more likely to be called 'gin palaces' than yachts here.

Hmmmmmm

Snag says perhaps he means: isn't the vhf registered?

Rather unlikely at the look of it, and if so, probably someone else's name.

The only sure thing is that he got separated from the boat  B) Not funny really.

That belong to Rimas?

His last boat got cut adrift in the South China Sea by Vietnamese fishermen. After the miraculous escape from Natewa Bay on Vanua Levu, I'd believe anything was possible for his yachts.

Didn’t the boat wash up on a beach in China, quite some time before Rimas himself surfaced?  That was, like, the fourth or fifth time we were sure for certain that he was dead.

Exposing your knowledge of Marine Radio again Jack? You might recall that didn't end well for you last time you tried that cupcake.

Inspector Cantillon said the missing yachtsman's name was not Walter, but that his real name could be mixed-up with the name Walter.

Which is?
