So here we are...Boxing Day at the G. Aussies win the toss, ask England to bat and 1st wicket falls in 2nd over....here we go again....and the another in Cummins's 4th over.

Root and Makan have steadied the ship since and England 2/58.

But who cares right now coz the Sydney to Hobart race is about to start in 5 mins.

My prediction for the MCG, Boxing Day start.

Australia 450-6 dec.  England 200, made to follow on, 200 again.  Australia win by an innings and 50 runs, and the Ashes 3-0.

Looks like a rerun of Brisbane so far. England not likely to make 200.

And then Warner rubbed some salt into the wound by getting a relatively quickfire 38...before getting out.

Plan A tomorrow will be to bat the day out and they should be around 400 by then

Did Lyons survive to stumps?

Those first few balls worried me a bit. I don't think Marnus or Smith were keen to head out that late,

Harris got hit a beauty on his finger late in the day. Seemed to be an open wound coz there was a fair amount of bleeding happening when attended by team medic.

Can 'Post it Pat' do no wrong? What a wonderful time to be an Australian cricket fan. I do feel for Joe, nice bloke, truly great batsmen and he has to lead this pack of C graders into an ashes series. He deserves better.

Just think how many more runs he'd score if he was in a decent team!

I am speechless. To all England Cricket fans my thoughts are with you today. The smart thing for the English squad now is to head out and try and catch covid.

What the fuck are we supposed now to do for the rest of the afternoon?

Any bets for Sydney and Hobart?  Now the Ashes are gone, might there be a resurgence of spirit among the touring side?

I fear not, and that it will be a clean sweep, 5-0.

I doubt it considering their 2nd Test debrief session where they supposedly had a warts and all discussion and vowed to do better this test...and then last night and this morning happened.  Insipid.

It'll be a whitewash 5-0 barring inclement weather in Sydney or Hobart.

As LB said above...the best they can hope for is catch covid and forfeit next two tests.

English first class cricket has been lured away from five day Test matches by ODI and T20 sport.  The Test format requires a totally different physical and mental discipline.  That's why it's called a "Test."

Discuss.

Fourth Test at the Sydney CG.  Miserable weather forecast, on and off rain for the whole five days.  A possible reprieve for England.

Anyway, Australia won the toss, and quite correctly elected to bat, despite the slow outfield.  Hopefully a start in ten minutes, half an hour late.

Any bets?

One very easy one - England WILL NOT WIN. Australia may not either if the rain sticks around.

Meanwhile in NZ....Bangladesh have done the unthinkable...they've beaten NZ in the 1st Test of their series in NZ...and by 8 wickets

Thanks for putting up this thread, mate.  I'm in California, so the possibilities of watching this live are zero point zero.  But I'm on the cricbuzz.com (by Times Of India of all people) website, where there's ball-by-ball written commentary.  Better than nuffin.

Having both UK and Oz passports (US too) I'm always torn for the Ashes.  But this time I'm truly Australian.  Good to see the 50 up.

Oops, spoke too soon, Warner's gone. 51-1

And yes on Bangladesh.  What an upset - beating the top team on their own patch.  Amazing.

No probs.

And Warner got out to his nemesis, Stuart Broad. Unlucky 13th time according to commentary on Cricinfo, which btw is another excellent resource with ball by ball commentary.

Plus the rain is back :(

OK, prediction time again.

Despite the continuing interruptions for rain, Australia get to 350 at end of play today, and declare.

England start tomorrow, lose 3 or 4 key batsmen early, and struggle to 175 all out at the end of day 3.

Australia make them play on, and skittle them out again for 175 for an innings defeat.  All over in day 4.

Australia will not make them follow on. They don't want to bat in the 4th innings. That's why they chose to bat first.

Plus if they enforce follow on then game will finish earlier, which is not good for Cricket Australia or SCG coffers.

Apart from needing a lead of 200+ to enforce the follow on, the rest looks plausible

Yes, I forgot that 200+ requirement for the follow-on.

In any event, Australia need to make a good score quite quickly, and skittle out some poms tomorrow and on the last day to avoid a draw because of the weather.

Strategy and tactics, but the weather will dictate a lot of things.  Just like ocean racing!

Aussie tail wagging again, although Khawaja just got out.

Might be good opportunity to post 400 then declare and have 8 or so quick overs at the Poms and knock over a couple of wickets, if the light holds up.

OK so we're about to start after an hour and a half delay due to rain.

90 minutes play before break for lunch, that's if the rain stays away, which it looks ok by the radar atm.

Bring it on.

2 down already...with one to Boland in his 2nd over.  He has a Test average atm of 6.88!!

Edit: Make that 3 with Boland now at 2/0 with avg of 6.11!!

Link to post

Boland - 2 wickets for no runs in 4 overs

Green - 1 wicket for no runs in 4 overs.

England are playing well - not at 4/36. 53 balls without a run.

Boland's astonishing effort, from dismissing Bairstow at MCG to now:

W....W..W.W..............W......W.....

His current numbers 4 4 0 2

And the Australian bowlers have 53 dot balls in a row, including 3 wickets.

What a mess.

Well well well...England have found some fight. Was about to write they've put on 200 runs with loss of only 2 wickets but Wood just nicked one that then hit his helmet then bobbled up to Lyon at point and now they're 7/245 with Bairstow 5 short of the 1st English ton for the series.

I tried, for a while I really did, but I can't stand the fucking brain numbing ads.

Then I went back and tried again and failed, switched it off.  How the fuck did we ever watch TV and put up with seeing the same stupid shit repeated once every six ball bowled.

It's just not worth the brain pain.

Kayo is your friend Random. I signed up on a $5 per month deal for 2 months to watch the Ashes and will cancel it after the Hobart Test.

And Bairstow got his ton and England finished the day at 7/258. Finally some fight. Probably not enough but at least it's something.

I second the Kayo approach. I have it for all sorts of sport.   Fantastic and can cancel it at the drop of a hat.

mmm...we may have a bit of a contest with Australia losing Labuschagne and Smith since lunch to be 4/91 atm only 213 runs in front.

But then England need to bat on this wicket so we probably only need a 150 run lead

So Australia declare at 270 or so, 390 ahead, and put England in late today for a few torrid overs, hoping to shatter some opening bats.

Then it's clean up on day 5, assuming the weather holds.

Revised.... Australia will wait to declare until Khawaja has his second match century, or is dismissed.  As above, serious bowling attack at the end of the day.

Done...Green gets his 50 and Uzzie gets his 2nd ton. Declared at 4/258 with a 380 run lead.  Looks about 17 overs to come for the day. Should be enough time to knock over 2 or 3 wickets.

Edit: mmm it seems that it's drinks not a declaration.

Come on!  Declare!  Australia 388 ahead.  388 has only been done once in a 4th innings in Test history.

England may escape out through the rain tomorrow otherwise.

But a splendid two centuries from Khawaja.  Very rare!

Done. Poms are up. Now they have to stay disciplined and play out the remaining time.

They should be seeing a draw as a win right now.

Amazing . Thanks for that :)

No probs.

England may get lucky this evening coz there's a BIG thunderstorm out near Parramatta that might dump a bucketload of rain on the SCG before 6pm.

Oh and just announced that almost $5m raised for McGrath Foundation

When was it that cricketers started the fist-bump thing after every run?  Like those annoying volleyballers.

The practice really shits me.  I'm going to ban it.

To Quote the 12th man doing Richie B- ‘the High five is just some bullshit the West Indies brought into the game- the traditional Australian pat on the arse, or a bit of a dry root is a much more manly way to celebrate’.

The man was a genius.

So...England have got past tea with 6 wickets in hand. Aussies now only got 29 overs to get the remaining 6 wickets. Odds swinging to a draw although the new ball is only 7 overs away. We'll see if that brings any joy to Aussies.

Edit: We didn't need to wait until the new ball as Lyon gets Stokes. 5 to go.

Finally a tight match for the draw or Australia win.  5 overs to go, and 2 wickets.  Any bets?

Now 270/9 with 2 overs to go.  Amazing
