Well, who knew?  Well done and thanks, Scot, for giving some of us a voice and a place to play.  And well done too for selling out when there's still lots of upside for the new guys.

What's next, "Wheelchair Anarchy?"

I am incredibly proud and remain as thrilled as ever by creating this place and working on it nearly every single day, 365 days a year.

And we've been with you, checking in with SA and the Forums 365, a daily part of our lives. Thanks for the ride!

congrats, scot

you actually lasted a commendably long time at the helm and the openness around airing your gaffs and legal journeys was very refreshing

in a world of ego burnishing on social media its so easy for folks in your position to present only buffed up positive elements and you set a standard for allowing the other less pretty side of human social interaction be it showing yourself, front paging stupid human tricks (AUS sailing officialdom bad actors ie), or just allowing members to act like complete idiots

good job!

I am incredibly proud and remain as thrilled as ever by creating this place and working on it nearly every single day, 365 days a year.  It is a labor of love that has defined me in many ways, allowed me to do essentially what I want while helping to bring this huge community of sailors together.

And on that note,  truly, it is you who have made this place what it is. I never had a mission statement per se, but the one thing that I have always tried to do is to not make Sailing Anarchy about me, but to make it about you, the sailors.  Sure, I put up my occasional vanity pieces, and I spout of editorially from time to time, but that's about it. That so many of you identify yourself as anarchists is something that deeply touches me. For real.

A lot of you have been with us from the jump, and to them,  all the way to the people who have just discovered us (where the fuck have you been anyways?) I give a heartfelt thank you. And in truth, I'm a little sad as I reflect on the last 22 years. Hell, a tear or two may have fallen, but don't you dare tell that to anyone!

Nobody thought we'd succeed. I should print the list of e-mails from the naysayers, haters and chumps who bagged on us literally from day one, but I never listened to any of them. Not one. Had I, I'd have been curled up in the fetal position, crying for my mommy. But my response then, as it is 22 years later has always been "Fuck Off".

And to the high-profile venture capitalist who wished me doom and unmitigated failure, you are long gone, and I am still here. Bite me, I mean if you still could...

This sport needed to be shaken up, and who would have thought that it would be us? Without boasting,  we have changed the way this sport is covered and reported.  My Senior Editor, Mr. Clean had a huge role in that, and I'll be forever grateful to him. Every single "journo" or publication has disliked or outright hated us, never gave us any recognition and certainly no props. But really, who gives a fuck? I never did. Our traffic numbers don't lie, and they are all painfully aware of that fact. The notable exception is of course Seahorse, with who we have been very good friends with for many years. It's no surprise that those who know what they are doing, get us, while the fuckwits just don't understand...

As for how SA started, I will forever be indebted to old man and bullshit artist Tom Leweck for refusing to print or even acknowledge a letter I had sent into his dumb little newsletter decades ago. His good ol' boy club hypocrisy is truly what motivated me to start SA.  And then when he gave it to his untalented glad-handing chump of a son, well that was just gasoline on the fire for me,  which as many of you know, is exactly the way I like it! Of all the publications, Craig's daddy's has been the most fun to bury. Fuck both of you!

Nobody dared to do what we did, and so many of them (and you fuckers know who you are) eventually copied much of what we started. Everybody rips everything off, but we were the originators. The agitators.  The anarchists. And we're still here.

Much love to all my people right here right now.

Well done Scot.

Have a great "Retirement". I remember the regular drinks in Sydney that even led to a wedding for some bloke with 5 heads!!!

We lost a couple along the way but SA's rallied around to comfort the the loved ones.

I recall Mr Clean comming to Australia, the lad seemed to enjoy a drink!!! Even at the expense of "Phil's"  front lawn!

So Scot go sailing and enjoy your fun!!

SA's new owner would like to thank Scooter for his years of dedication to the sport of sailing. The new management would also like to announce a slight change in the direction of SA to better capitalize on the recreational market. In the near future we will be inviting our powerboat friends to join us! I know all of the current members here will welcome our new friends with open arms. So it is with great excitement that we announce the new name of SA - Powerboat and Sailing Anarchy.

New CEO Joe salutes you Scot.

Good luck Scot on your two new future endeavors: one, to bring world peace and understanding, the other, to resolve the 2010 Etchells Mould 11 build-to CAD solid issue.  I know one will be a much more difficult task than the other...

I so look. forward to world peace and understanding in 2022.  Best and god bless.

The Mould 11 issue is all over, one of the 5 people responsible hit “Reply all” without checking who was on the address line back in March 2012.

It is just a question of the accountability.

But as with most things it is not the initial error that gets you it is the cover up.

And as the Australian Nationals got cancelled, well!

The Ed can get old with World peace now.

This is the message that has come out from the new owners of a couple of other forums I have seen.

Sounds like this might be next year for this one, after they have time to stitch in the new purchase into the Empire they are creating."

Hello everyone!

On behalf of the Community Management team, we'd like to offer you the warmest of welcomes to the XXXXXX family of forums!  Our team helps manage the site administration and maintenance duties of keeping ZZZZZ.com operational, and we wanted to take the opportunity to not only say hello, but also to share a little bit about what to expect.

Who Are We?

XXXXXX is a network of forum communities around the internet. The community management staff on our team help make the work of the forum moderators and administrators easier.

What Do We Do?

Community means a great deal to us - we're all community people, and so continuity and stability are our primary aim.  We bring reliability, support, and the infrastructure required to ensure that this community will be able to thrive for many years to come.  It is our goal to work with the volunteer moderators/administrators to provide the resources required to increase reach, attract new members, increase engagement, and better the community experience overall.

What Will Change?

From a cultural side, next to nothing, you will eventually see our TOS and Privacy Policies in place but you’ll find they’re the same as you already work with. From a technical standpoint in the coming months you will see some necessary software updates and a change in the look and feel as we have a platform we’ve built up that should improve performance.  Apart from that you'll now have access to better resources as well as community management staff for support and forum-related technical issues.  Community is the focus here, and we know that the members of every forum work to keep things going awesomely.  You're a huge part of that success, and we're here to ensure that the lights stay on, upkeep is tended to, and the infrastructure gets the attention it needs.

If you have any questions, ask away!

We're looking forward to working with the members, mods and admins here, and we're incredibly happy to be with you.

Warm Regards,

The XXXXXX Community Team

So we can expect a bunch of unsuspecting newbies to wander in here. Thank fuck I am retired. Rest up lads we are going to be busy.

Very best wishes!  It has been irresplaceable to "feel" connected to the sailing scene around the world from the engines that have driven SA for years- you and your team.  I'm in Oklahoma (Boomer!), so it is even harder to keep up and feel connected in this small oasis of what remains of sailing/ racing.  I emailed you earlier about trying to meet you in person, have lunch or dinner on me and (?) go for a sail w/you.  Bucket stuff for me for sure...hope that is still possible in 2022.  We are perhaps in a dying sport... and meeting up with you in 2022 for a sail and some good food would be a kick.  Glad you' are staying on to help "transition" w/ new slaves (er, owners? LOL) to this BEAST of a machine.  Well done.  Thank you.  Please let me know best contact info for you and let's plan a day next spring in 2002 if that is possible!  Sincerely, Anarchist Grant Gerondale (918) 694-3530   Tulsa, OK

Wow, sometimes you think good things will stay forever, and then you find they don't. What a bummer, but thanks for all the great stuff on SA. What I especially liked in all those years was the pure writing talent and the sharp eye for a story. I am deeply concerned the new owner will find it hard to replace that. Good luck and see you on the water!

One caveat. Based on a professional lifetime acquiring and sometimes selling businesses, it has been my experience that when the seller is proud to announce the new owners of the business, and the buyer thrilled to announce their new ownership, it has generally been good for the customers. When the seller and buyer are reticent to disclose names, the customer outcomes have been less rosy.

We always ask the owner to stay on.  With a few exceptions, due to health reasons, it is one of my very few bright lines. If the owner is not reluctant to leave and reluctant to sell, do I really want to buy that business.? Scooter's mixed emotions about selling does him credit.

Older owners may only stay 1-3 years but we (if we are the new owners) do all that we can to make sure it is the best year of their business lives, so that they know that they have left the business in good hands. Some of them decide no to retire after all.....and put the energizer bunny to shame.

I'm assuming the "Anarchy" business model by now incorporates Google revenues but I suspect a thoughtful buyer can see ways of leveraging the brand without in any way diminishing the combination of irreverent humor and searching for the truth behind the headlines that we all so enjoy. "The status quo blows" is a style that could work in other places.

Good luck Scot, and may the next chapter turn out to be even more exciting and engaging than the last.

Here's something you likely didn't see coming: as of today I have sold Sailing Anarchy. After 22 years of creating, publishing, and stirring as much shit up as I could (while maintaining SA as a business), I feel like now is a good time to hand the tiller over to someone else.

Oh don't worry, I'll still be driving the content as I have been retained for at least the next 12 months, so we'll continue to have the good, informative, snarky, ridiculous and entertaining stuff we've always strived to produce.

But I have never cared for all of the other work that goes into running a business; you know the taxes and the payroll and the assorted other heaps of nonsense that is required to keep SA afloat. But afloat we have been, through thick and thin, good times and bad. We're like dogshit on your shoes; it never seems to go away. And the stink lingers for what seems like forever. 22 years of forever.

I don't know that this is an end of an era, as I'll still be here and I've signed a  relatively short non-compete with the new owners, but handing over the keys is still such a strange feeling for me.

Not at all surprised. Normal business evolution, or is it devolution?

Congratulations and thanks for creating  this sausage factory. You somehow made it work. Like many, I miss the "old days" but you can't go back and I value the people I've met and all the good times. A lot of very intelligent and supremely fucked up hang their hats here and make it a refuge from the daily insanities that surround us. Hope it continues but ain't countin' on it. Just the way it is.

Carry on. Keep stirring the pot and have fun sailing.

Thanks Scot for providing us a place to play.

Congrats on your "retirement".

Having said that, if fucking Garmin takes the wheel, this old guy is gonna be pissed.

Thanks Scot.  The  uncensored bit in particular. Disagree with some of your rantings,Climate Change mostly but, hey,I don't have to read / believe your misguided views. This must be one of the last bastions of free press and guess what. No one is injured, endangered,or harmed by an exchange of opinion. But it may, just may broaden that opinion. They'll alter/touch it at their peril. Rare is the new owner of anything that thinks they can't "improve" it.

Congrats on actually getting both an exit and a contract to stay on.  Thanks for this site. I am a latecomer but it's brought me all too many hours of fun, excitement, information, angst, ire and laughter. Good thing I used a burner email, eh?

Happy New Year!

If the new owners decide to "improve" things in a bad way, or "maximize shareholder value" the traffic here will just migrate to a new platform.   The real value of SA is the contributors in the forums.

Congrats and good luck on the transition.  You built something that made a contribution to the sport and deserve to be proud.  Our sport still needs much changing - but you've done your part.  Enjoy the next phase.

Quite a long thread for Christmas time.

At some point I may decide to explain why I bought the place.

in the meantime, I look forward to Scot joining the Austin J-80 fleet. His dock space can be directly across from Zuckerberg

finally: I do not intend to learn to use the flick tools.

I sorta like how Scot has allowed writers like  @Happy Jack, @GRUMPY

@VWAP, @Sea warrior, @chum, @Venom, @Dabnis2, @Bull Gator a chance to fully develop their reputation as destructive community despised assholes before throwing them out.
