keeping this thread alive.   15+ years of debauchery.

Happy Holidays everyone.  Just another semi-annual check in.  I sold my Dana 24 and bought a Valiant 40 in Mexico.    Bashing back up Baja soon, I hope!

Decided to retire early and do some serious cruising.  Keeldragger is heading to the Sea of Cortez in December.  Adios.

KD!!! Welcome back! Except for SA being a big-fucking-shit-hole, not much else has changed. Keep filling your KeelDragger youtube channel with fresh new videos, even you still own a 4KSB.

Go the ressurection of an 11-year old thread! B)

Time for the semi-annual thread bump.  We'll see if the thread sticks around for another 10 years.

Remember... TEAMWORK!

Happy Holidays!

KD

I guess this is the annual thread bump.

That’s awesome KD!  Make sure you get a Baja filter for your fuel.  Also, Ernesto in Turtle Bay (The fuel guy) REALLY enjoys porno mags so get some value packs before you depart.

Is Ernesto the gentleman I've heard referred to as "Boss Hogg"?      I've heard from several that Isla de Cedros is a better stop for fuel.

The boat looks beautiful, and everything tied down and ready to go...did you find it like this? Or, make it like this? Or, arrange for the work to be done like this in Mehico?

Dang thats nice.

Thanks!    Prior owner did a first rate job on maintaining this boat.

Keeldragger V finished the Baja Bash last weekend.  I hired a delivery captain and crew since I could not take all of the time off.  Managed to join in for the first and last legs: appx 200 miles out of the ~1000 mile journey.    First leg was from La Paz to San Jose Del Cabo.  Next window was to Bahia Santa Margarita, then to Isla de Cedros.  Plan was to go from Cedros directly to San Diego, but the weather window was only good to Ensenada.  Ensenada to San Diego to San Pedro to finish the journey.

While the boat has been well-maintained, I was a little nervous about the possibility of a mechanical issue coming up along the way.  She has a Volvo Penta 2003T with over 5K hours.  A couple of minor issues came up.  The raw water pump sprung a bad leak between La Paz and San Jose del Cabo.  Had a spare on board (spare is weeping and looks to need a rebuild as well).  The starter motor failed to engage at Ensenada.  Delivery captain and mechanic were able to get her started by banging with a hammer.   I met captain and crew at the CBP dock in San Diego.  We left the engine running during check in as well as during inspection at marina in San Pedro.  Good plan--she won't start now but she made it to her slip.   First project:  replace the starter motor.

I have a new appreciation for keeping a full stock of spares onboard.

Where in the Sea of Cortez? The place is wonderful.

Unknown.  No set agenda.  I'll likely make La Paz somewhat of a base and expect to spend most of my time on the West side.  I would like to explore up to Bahia de los Angeles.

@keeldragger I have perused your Youtube channel and did not locate the Teamwork video.

I was hoping to show it to my kids, who were not born when it was created! I do not have FB. Does this video still exist?

I, too, would like to re-watch the video if it still exists.

So I decided to repower before going on my next great adventure.   Hopefully I'll have the new engine and v-drive in before the end of April, but the supply chain crisis is impacting deliveries.

In the meantime, I'm still sailing locally and occasionally dodging tsunamis.

Funny.  I had not part in the making of the Fly the Cloth video.  Someone else posted it and took it down, but I saved it off and reposted it.  Still attributed to me 15+ years later!

Related question, what ever happend to Harry Manko, creator of the "Sail the Cloth" and "Star Bored" videos? They were taken down from Google video, and http://harrymanko.com/ is dead.

^^ Original source of the "Sail the Cloth" video.  It's disappeared long ago.
