Kitty in Drag 0
To the crew of Hankerin and Whiplash past and present, Ted and whipper, I am truly sorry for the loss of your friend and Captain. Sash has run a wonderful program for years. He has done more than anyone to expand the sport of sailing in the State. The opportunity he has presented young people is truly selfless and generous. Big Dog Party has been the recipient of many great young sailors from Southport over the last few years. Besides the common thread of being very good sailors they have been wonderful people. This is Sash's legacy, he should be proud.

Sash did so much for our Southport sailing community without asking for anything in return and he will be missed. Most people don't know he gave WHiplash to the Southport Junior Sailing Foundation last year to help fund and bring long term stability to that program. Godspeed, Sash. alteredst88 1
Because my heart is bigger than my brain... BBQ at the Tiernan's, 8 Winslow Road in Falmouth, 5pm until 10 pm Friday the 13th (bwahaha). We will have beer, beef, and a few snacks. Feel free to bring anything else you would like to share (just keep the necessary prep to a minimum). Hope to see you there! Gerry and Genevieve PS - If you give me some idea how many of you bastards are going to show, I'll be a lot less likely to run out of beer. PM me. Thanks to everyone that came out. C Koch 1
Ouch! I spent my summers in York Beach as a kid, do I get any points for that? You want points? I'll give ya points! Points for clogging up the streets with traffic, points for long lines at the ice cream place, points for taking up all the parking spaces near all the beaches. I could go on and on but I don't want to thread jack too much. I grew up in York Beach -- was one of those permanent residents that barely tolerated the summer people, or "goatropers" as we called them. Hell, I probably sold you candy at the Goldenrod! Once I got a little older, I better understood the economic benefits and what not. But for so many years, it was "Why can't you just leave your wallet and go home?" That is just too funny. What a small world.

carvilli 0
Not a protest per say - a request for redress from one of the Etchells. How you do a redress regarding # of races, I don't know. I would love to have raced more than one race each day, but if RC makes the call, then that's it. It is not an easy job to be the RC, and sometimes you have to make calls that aren't popular. I certainly found it challenging to race on Sunday, and I was playing with GPS and instruments. Pilot was fun, it would have been better with more boats. I hope folks are getting out for Harraseeket next weekend, a fun race, pursuit format which is a neat change of pace, and hopefully a good bit of wind. sorry, I dont think the protest was A. C Koch 1
Good for me and the rest of the crew of Keemah. We saw a couple boats catch pots, and one guy aground. Winds were pretty steady 11-12kts. Alot of reaching. Good? I would say so!! You guys were freaking flying!! We didn't have a huge problem when you passed us to windward going up Whaleboat 'cause we knew you wouldn't waste your time getting by us. About a second and a half of bad air and you were gone! As Tyler said, lots of reaching, which is not unusual with that race because they basically send us around the islands. Except it was in reverse this time with the Geese to starboard instead of port. Got to shake things up once in a while, especially when the wind is from the north. BTW, one boat that ran aground violated the sub-rule of Rule number 1 of the Harraseeket River: Rule number 1: Do not go anywhere outside of moored boats Rule number 1a: Observe the moored boats around you and do not go where said moored boats are drastically different from your own. IOW, there is probably a reason you see nothing but small power boats in a particular part of the harbor. So don't go there in your 45+ foot sailboat. Fortunately, a local got the guy off. Oh yeah. There's a rock off the upper end of the Geese. Don't hit it.
stickboy 3
Harry Seek It? How was it? G Beat, reach, reach. Definitely a sprit boat day, Keemah looked like they were driving down I95. It was over pretty quick, they chose the short course as it was predicted to die but it didn't, the breeze stayed strong enough all day. Saw one very cool J35 round up, probably the folks on Phoenix would use a differnt description. Many thanks to all who passed us to leeward.

How many boats doing the SITR commute daily from moorings/berths in Boothbay Harbor or do you all move over to Ebencook Harbor for the duration of the regatta? For many (most?) of us it isn't a matter of moving over, since we're from out of town we are just based in Ebenecook Harbor. But having said that I know some Boothbay boats make the commute, just don't miss the bridge!

C Koch 1
Who went aground off Clapboard during the PYC Thursday night race this week? We were out for an evening cruise and heard on the VHF that two boats were on the bricks ... at high tide. Yikes. Hope all was resolved without too much damage/injury. Nice breeze last night -- had a great sail out of SoFreeMe around Chebeague. I love northerlies in Casco Bay; you can get just about anywhere.

Washburn & Doughty build (built?) some pretty neat tugboats there. Wonder what effect this will have on the Boothbay Boatbuilder's and Seafood Festival?

sailbad the sinner 0
Yeah any good stories, or horrific breakdowns? Anybody with PTSSD*? * Post Trumatic Sailing Stress Disorder PTSSD can be hard to spot among sailors because the symptoms are very simmilar to the normal aberrant behavior often exhibited after the race: stumbling around the front lawn of the Portland Yacht Club, with a drink in hand and too many under the belt, mumbling to anyone who pops into view about ones heroic, brilliant and very amusing adventures on the water. The more advanced cases spill over on to Commercial Street and last far into the night. Wikipedia Encyclopedia

suider 97
ahhh... the stories i'm missing this year, huh? competitive revo's, groundings, destroyed chicken chutes.... take a year off from gmora and all the excitement happens.... sheesh.... well, breeze was definitely on 'down south' as well, especially on sunday... we came in 4th (um, out of 5) which sounds bad until you throw in that richardson's barking mad came in 3rd (with terry hutchinson on board doing tactics!)... so, the competition was a little stiff..... still have to try and get out up here sometime soon.... so don't everybody completely fill up that 'wanted: surly, half-drunk bowman needed for abuse from afterguard.' position at the same time, ok? /c

carvilli 0
This weekend was fun. My boat was high and dry due to navigation errors at Harraseeket, sooo I went and played with the Etchells. Man those are fun boats! And they were great on Sunday, most of the fleet decided not to fly the chutes - which was probably good. Out of the two boats that did, only 1 carried for a whole leg, and on the next leg he blew it out. I was soaked well before the racing started, but man it was a blast. We only lost a pair of pliers and a bilge pump hose. What a great weekend! Have fun in Boothbay, I'll be in for Southport.

Catamount 0
CKoch, stickboy -- missed seeing you at Boothbay; are you coming up for Southport? Oh well, the weather sure sucked on day 2. Kitty and all the cats on BDP, my 10-year old crew thinks you guys are one of the coolest boats out there. Thinking of making a jump from Cruising to Racing for Monhegan (Manana), but I'm a lot short on crew still -- could use someone (or two) who could help me figure out dip-pole gybes, if anyone knows someone looking for a ride. Catamount 0
Way to go Greyhawk!!! Nice job! And a good-sized cruising class to boot! But no race 2? Was that because of weather coming through? The class looks a lot different this year. Lots of new names, and missing some old timers (like us). Day 2, wind speed = 0.0 knots most of the day in the start area. The RC was able to get Division 1 off, but then they basically sat off either side of Squirrel for a looonnnnggg time (the fleet split with two boats going to the east and two to the west of Squirrel). They tried to start Division 2, but issued a general recall a few minutes after the gun when it was clear no one was going to go anywhere. Eventually we could see the Div.1 boats starting to heel a bit as a little (just a little) bit of breeze started to fill in. We thought it would come up to us, so the rest of us might be able to get a race in too (in the rain), but it was very patchy and never materialized. After much discussion over the VHF between the RC and the Div. 1 boats about how it was going out there, they abandoned Div. 2, 3, 4 and Cruising at around 14:20(?), by which time it had started raining pretty good, with several boats already having retired. Catamount 0
Can anyone verify that Div 1 raced on Sunday and they were the only ones to race that day? I can confirm that Division 1 did start a race on Sunday and were still racing when the rest of us were excused. See Post #3786 for my previous report on that. The RC stayed on station for the Div 1 boats to finish, and they all (RC and Div 1 boats) showed up at the BHYC together quite some time after the rest of us had arrived. So it would seem sensible that they did finish the race that they started, but I don't know that for sure. The results list four races for Division 1, but only 2 races for Divisions 2, 3 & 4. It would make sense that Div.1 was able to get in 3 races on Saturday, with the 4th race being on Sunday.

Jangles13 9
Unusual request: Anyone who would consider, or knows of someone, taking a group of 6-7 twentysomething girls having a bachelorette party for a booze cruise around Portland Harbor or similar? This would be the evening of August 16th (Saturday). I'm not aware of any commercial outfits that might provide such a service. This would be preferably be on a sailing vessel of appropriate size and the vessel's skipper/captain/owner to keep things on an even keel. I will not be in attendance nor do I have any attachments to any of the ladies, simply a request from a non-sailor friend. Probably best to PM me...

C Koch 1
Wow! How hard was it blowing? Since we have no wind instruments, we relied on buoy reports. Portland weather buoy said 19 gusting to 25 with 2.6 foot seas but I say they were lying... at least about the seas. It was pretty rolly and confused out there. But the wind was no comparison to the MS Regatta from last year (or was it the year before last?) It got pretty squally at around 7 p.m. when we were between Fuller Rock and the Monument. Had full main and partially furled genny up and the old girl handled it quite well. Once inside the monument the seas quieted down but the lightning was a bit intimidating. Then once at Pound of Tea is was downright tranquil.
