I noticed that while quite a few bigger cats were mentioned, there seems to be a lack of bigger tris that are appealing to the audience.
Anything out there in the performance cruising camp other than Finn and Venom ? Throw in the Rapido 60 …
Thanks for the very clear explanation.
I agree with you that probably the limited reduction in wetted surface (given that there already is an appreciable heel to start with) does not justify the added complexity of the foil.
does this more conventional approach (e.g. G4) also work when the foil is retracted as in the pic ? I suspect there might be flow issues between the hull and the foil and that the surfacing might happen at higher heel angles than 8 deg (which might be considered a safety threshold).
please explain
my thinking was that when you have a “safe” heel angle of maybe 5-6 deg, at a reasonable boat speed the windward foil is going to lift some weight and add the remaining 2-3 deg heel needed to fly the hull. if you then experienced a wind gust this would be increasing heel thus...
I would love to get some advice from the pros on this forum.
It appears to me that the perfect sailing point for a performance cruising cat (e.g. Marsaudon or Outremer) is when one hull is just skimming the water. Unfortunately this condition is unstable and tricky and no cruiser would consider...
