    Best Recreational Beach Cat?

Stripped down the getaway can do well on corrected time under SCHRF. They also do well in the Everglades Challenge which is a good test of a boat

    Pi on a Boat

I really like the idea but rasp Pi's have gotten really expensive lately. I thought I could run opencpn on an Android tv box instead of the pi, but I ran into some snags getting Linux onto it. Before I got too involved in reflashing the android box, I tried loading navionics and other marine...

Congratulations to the solo participants. It must have been tough

Around PEC multihull long distance on Lake Ontario

This will be a first for my son and I. We're working on learning the boat and developing teamwork that will hopefully prevent me from launching the kid around the forestay.

    R2AK 2022

Either way looks like hard work. If a boat and crew can make progress against strong headwinds, they'll come out ahead or break stuff trying. I'm looking at the mobile version of the tracker. I only see wind markers, not current. Is that something visible on a desktop browser?

    Everglades Challenge 2022

Can we stop to consider the perseverance of The18thCamel? He's still on raceowl showing at Flamingo. It was clear during the event that he wouldn't make it on time, but he said that he would continue on the course despite that. Getting that far on an inflatable catamaran in those conditions is a...

I looked at Windy. They're becalmed

    Everglades Challenge 2022

Someone could probably write an entire book focused on answering those questions.  Being old guard with local knowledge would be very helpful, but anyone with seamanship skills and knowledge of tides can do it.  I found when I did my own homework and started asking educated questions, prior...

    Everglades Challenge 2022

I like that it's impossible to completely tear down the outside in any boat. It makes it far more difficult for a sailboat but I wouldn't want to see it set up any other way

    Everglades Challenge 2022

Meh. That would disproportionately favour more expensive boats. Racing, managing winds, tides, and the need to rest makes for a more strategic event and an opportunity for the tortoise to compete with the hare.

    Used F18 Sails

Simple, cheap, easy to learn. Not so cheap if you're sailing them competitively I'd imagine.  I'm taking mine for a second run at the Everglades Challenge which I doubt I will ever do solo on a Infusion 18

    Used F18 Sails

100% Also a light crew is a big advantage. I'm glad I bought it to transition from monohull to catamaran.

    Used F18 Sails

I looked at the diagram for measuring a sail and I kind of lost interest.  Then I installed a small spinnaker which would have really killed the rating. Then I bought a F18 and it became a moot point.

    Used F18 Sails

My replacement main for my Dart is a square top. The Dart already has a tendency to dive when pushed hard. The square top doesn't help that situation, but it's not noticeably worse either. It's hard to say if light air performance is measurably better. I'm not sure I'd do it again. I've taken...

    Used F18 Sails

If the new sail needs significantly more bend to flatten the sail, there's two issues. One, the hardware may not have enough power to bend the mast adequately and two, the h18 mast may not be designed for that much bend.

    Used F18 Sails

You should be. Excessive luff curve on a straight mast is going to make for a crap sail shape.

Those were all I could buy in Everglades City after I lost my shoe at Chockoloski. They were a little too warm for Key Largo

    NOAA Raster Charts

So I now have some of the raster charts in a kmz format using these instructions:   https://support.garmin.com/en-CA/?faq=cVuMqGHWaM7wTFWMkPNLN9   It's kind of a round about way of doing it, but the only way I could make work.  For some reason, I could only do half of a strip chart at a time...
