Thanks to everyone who showed an interest in our restoration and sorry it took so long to get some sailing shots! Just Sail - again, cheers for sending the plaque over. Keith - I can't answer your question about whether the boat is still fast or not as we haven't done enough sailing yet. I hope...

And then we actually went sailing! 30th December at Blackpool. It was very windy and we managed to capsize four times and not get any photos. Nothing broke though, except me. Then we sailed the New Year's Day Pursuit at LLSC and got some good shots:

We have sorted all the control lines out now. We have gone for a pretty simple layout, with only 2 controls per side. We have chocks rather than a strut and the kite pole uphaul is cleated off in a clamcleat on the side of the mast just under gooseneck height on starboard.

Hi all, sorry for the lack of updates. It's only been a year! We didn't do any sailing at all from March 2012 up until Christmas but we have done a bit of work to the boat and made some new sails. It's all basically finished now. Over the Summer we made some new sails. The main is based on our...

    karma attack for Ainslie??

They showed an interview with Ben after the race. He is absolutely seething: "Both him and the Danish guy basically teamed up on me." "They made a big mistake because they made me angry, and they didn't want to make me angry." "It's bad, it's really bad, so I'm not happy with that. It's...

    "recreational" jib for a 470

I'm amazed that 2nd hand 470 jibs are hard to find, as people who campaign 470s normally have garages full of them. Why not put a wanted ad on the US 470 site or better still, email some of the top US teams directly. Tell them you were considering spending $200 on a new "club spec" sail and...

Well, we finally launched the boat yesterday. We worked a full day on Saturday and it still wasn't quite finished but good enough to go sailing. We took a screwdriver and plenty of tape out as well, just in case! We managed to pick the day of the club's annual pursuit race for the launch so we...

    Is It Wrong?

I agree with the previous posts in that I don't think you should get too hung up about trying to preserve the boat exactly in its original state. Some of the original control systems from that era will be pretty outdated and the important thing is that the boat is pleasurable for you to sail and...

Cheers. We wanted to preserve the things that deserved to be kept so that it looks authentic, whilst at the same time not compromising on anything that would affect performance. I actually sailed Croc JD in 2006 (about 3 owners ago), when a guy at our yacht club had the boat and remember that...

A little Croc JD update for those who are interested. It's amazing just how long the little fiddly finishing off jobs are taking. I seem to remember saying it was nearly finished about two months ago! Well, I mean it this time and we're planning a launch on Feb 26th to coincide with the Eskimo...

I did another day on the boat today and it's getting quite close to being finished. I wet sanded the mast with 180 grit to really clean it up and made the spreaders work, and took out, cleaned and re-riveted back on some of the sheave boxes. I managed to get the rig tension fittings all bolted...

Managed to get another day in and made some toestraps, fiddled with the jib bars and fitted the twinning line cleats, plus a few other bits. We could do with getting the mast up outside but it was pissing it down, so that will have to wait! I was going to make some kite bags but time ran out on...

Hi KC5212, thanks for the kind words. Glad you and your son had fun with the old Fireball, they sound like good times. Just Sail, I received the plaque in the post today. Many thanks for going out of your way to send one over - much appreciated. Work is going well on Croc JD. Most of the...

Oh, and another thing - a call for assistance actually. http://www.boatingaccessoriesus.com/proddetail.asp?prod=22-FP34 Does anyone know where I can get one of these plaques in the UK? I've looked but can't find one anywhere except from US sites which won't ship outside the US. It's not...

Maybe - it's just so much of a faff though, especially when you're up north. I wish they had the dinghy show at the NEC! We'll definitely be sailing the eskimo pursuit at Blackpool and Fleetwood YC on Feb 26th though, and I can see the most likely scenario being a launch one Sunday in Jan at...

Great pictures, thanks. I think it would just need grinding back to the bare hull shell and starting again. None of that wood is worth keeping by the looks of it. Possibly the centre spine structure or the centreboard case could be kept but we didn't really get a good shot of those. You're...

By the way, FreakIRL, what's the news on Dogbolter? If she's not been chopped in half yet, we'd be very interested in doing the same thing with her and having two boats on the water. We can arrange for collection from Dun Laoghaire. PM me if this is still possible. Cheers.
