2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race: The Race Committee has lodged a protest against Wild Oats XI

“As soon as we went around Bradley's Head the Channel 7 TV guys started live streaming from the helicopter. The instant they started streaming, we lost all our instrumentation. We lost our wifi, and a lot of instrumentation went down on the boat." "Thecameraman told us "sorry guys...

2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race: The Race Committee has lodged a protest against Wild Oats XI

Tricky Fair point, however we are splitting hairs over the (almost) real time info from AIS vs the same info coming at 10 minute intervals from Yellowbrick. We are not looking at an alternative where there is zero information available. Yes instant is always better, but did it make a difference...

2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race: The Race Committee has lodged a protest against Wild Oats XI

No way MR regrets it. Last year when his afterguard advised him to do the turns he (allegedly) said “no fuck it we nailed him”.  And what is there to regret? Bunch of us moaning online about him but he doesn’t read this thread and wouldn’t care if he did.  Maybe Sandy does (regret it) but he...

2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race: The Race Committee has lodged a protest against Wild Oats XI

No they didn’t. They sailed an average race and got lucky that they were NOT in the lead on approach to Tasman Is. Comanche showed the other three that the transition was further off the coast than expected and they could all avoid it. Don’t forget that The Indian made WOXI look pretty stupid...

2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race: The Race Committee has lodged a protest against Wild Oats XI

Your points RM: 1. Confining the discussion to this race only, the YB data shows SOG & COG over previous 1m, 5m& 10m intervals.  2. Agree. 10m updates this race for data listed above.  3. Not advocating using sat phone to look at CYCA tracker, that will cost a bomb. However for the...

2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race: The Race Committee has lodged a protest against Wild Oats XI

My point (partially) was that every boat has access to the Yellowbrick data which provides more info than rolling your mouse over the boats AIS icon. So isn’t it a bit like missing the weather on the radio sked but still having access to the  BOM weather on your laptop?

Yes. It has never been mandatory before this year.

2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race: The Race Committee has lodged a protest against Wild Oats XI

I bet you were a fucking litter monitor or prefect at school and still have the blind focus on exclusively what is in front of your snotty nose.  I’m so far from an Oats sock it’s beyond your grasp of numeracy. A rule is introduced this year for the first time. Arrogant fuck breaks it. Sure...

2018 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race: The Race Committee has lodged a protest against Wild Oats XI

I accept that it’s pretty sad that the RC has no right to protest a competitor (or a number of them perhaps) for rule breaches, and that leads to the even sadder bit for the race and the sport that the Oats machine can continue on its merry way year after arrogant year.  However...

    Sydney To Hobart 2018

2015 was a glamour start then a very rapid change to 25-30 on the nose. Last two races were fast reaching/running.

    Sydney To Hobart 2018

It’s a total cock up. The jury was simply asked to rule on whether a spinnaker could be set at the same time as a jib on a pole. They answered “no”, which has always been the case, but for some reason known to nobody they then added a nonsense sentence about attaching sheets vs clews or failing...

    Sydney To Hobart 2018

JS I believe the issue with the one design A3 on the VO65 was that it was cut too flat and too small, hence they mostly opted for the MH0. Also it did not set as well for triple heading as the MH0 and did, as you say, stay in the bag. In triple head set up the 65 would run about 142-145 TWA...

Blackjack out again today, but not racing. Very quick repair job on the spreader, must be confident taking it out in 25+ knots in the harbour this afternoon. (This pic is yesterday)

    Sydney To Hobart 2018

Fair comment Curious, I was not wishing to be at all critical of your statement of the facts. I recall in the 80’s we would phone up the weather line on Saturday mornings to be told the forecast for coastal waters and it was given in knots, but if a warning was issued it was in Beaufort...

    Sydney To Hobart 2018

Yet the major problem remains the RC not communicating the situation fully and clearly (including potential maximum wind speeds) to the fleet.  Secondly, the term “storm” is simply the Beaufort measure for winds of that magnitude, surprising that any offshore navigator would misunderstand its...

    Sydney To Hobart 2018

Hydraulic (not electric) winch power has made a huge difference to the Indian. Watch them rapidly hoist or furl the big sails for a start, then add the ability to trim under full load without getting 6 guys off the rail. Puts them level playing field with the other 100s wrt winches, so boat and...

Seriously janbart and Recidivist??? Stan Honey would fabricate evidence, or tell only the part of the story that suits his case?? No way.  Go sailing with real people at the level of Honey and Spithill, the brush with honesty and integrity would do you good.

I have seen Stan Honey's navigation plot (right place, right time) and it is unchallengeable. Shows a perfectly straight track at 1 second intervals for the whole of C's starboard tack until heading up to avoid WO. And this from a mass inertia compass he says cost $190k with mm accuracy.  Your...
