Anchoring in a Current and a Swell

Yes, was wondering about that. I imagine getting a keel-stepped mast down will be a major job. Maybe best left for when the standing rigging is replaced in 3 years or so. I have a wind sensor that isn't working so there's another reason to go up the mast. (Not a job I'm keen to do)

Anchoring in a Current and a Swell

Great idea! Not sure how I'm going to pull the cables as I haven't inspected the mast head since I bought the boat. Sounds like a job for winter when it's not so hot!

Anchoring in a Current and a Swell

When my first search result came with a $1000+ price tag I thought "NO WAY!!!". But after reading posts/blogs for DIY ones I can't wait to start building! Thanks. I can already see one on the spinnaker pole and one on the boom! The next question is "how big?" (My boat is 31ft, beam about 10ft)

Anchoring in a Current and a Swell

From the name of it, I can imagine I DO!!! But I've never heard of such a thing! I'll Google it now 😁

Anchoring in a Current and a Swell

I'd LOVE to solve the cable noise!! But how do you do that? I keep all the lines in the mast tight so they don't move around but what can I do about the radio antenna cable and light cables? (I'm assuming it's these that are making the noise in the mast)

Anchoring in a Current and a Swell

Platypus Bay on the West side of Fraser Island is great to anchor much of the time: the Southern bay is good for winds from Southerly to Easterly. Further north you can get good shelter from NE winds and also escape the swell by tucking under Rooney's Point, but that's a full day sailing to get...

Anchoring in a Current and a Swell

After another horrible night at anchor I think it's time I sought advice! Since buying my boat I've had several nights anchored anchored off the western shore of Fraser Island in Platypus Bay where the small swell has made for a very unpleasant night, even though the wind is blowing directly...

Convince Me To Buy A Chartplotter!

I'm assuming you mean something like a wifi enabled sounder/chartplotter like Raymarine Element (which I'm currently considering) or the Raymarine Wi-Fish? Do you know of any other good wifi data sources?

Convince Me To Buy A Chartplotter!

I have a somewhat outdated electronics background, so the Pi approach interests me, and it wouldn't take too much to get up to speed with the specifics of programming (I had to program in hex and assembler in my studies - the Pi should be a breeze!). I'm not sure I trust myself enough to make a...

Convince Me To Buy A Chartplotter!

I discovered the Raymarine Wi-Fish - a black box sounder that processes sounder signals and transmits the images over WiFi to a phone or tablet. Supposedly works with Navionics Boating App so you can have a split screen (chart and depth). Anyone have experience with this? The idea is...

Convince Me To Buy A Chartplotter!

Absence of good depth and bottom structure information is my biggest concern. Not really happy with the Clipper Depth - I would like more info. Also, a hard-wired 12V power source is better than a USB charge point, so I have more robust nav options. Also, I can take the tablet from the dodger...

🤣🤣🤣 I'm becoming quite adept at it too! 😁

Unfortunately that won't do anything I can already do 🙁

FKT, sounds like you are happy with the Navionics auto-build bathymetry maps (one of the significant factors leading me towards a plotter/sounder). I assume that bathymetry map is being produced on your tablet? Which transducer is sending data to your tablet? Sounds like that might be a better...

Convince Me To Buy A Chartplotter!

The area outside the marina is a bit tricky. When heading to Fraser Island, boats travel past the yellow marker. Water near the marker is good (about 4m at low tide) but as you can see, the bank to the WSW is troublesome and changes significantly - I landed on it a couple of weeks ago but...

Convince Me To Buy A Chartplotter!

That looks terrific, but the space I have to mount the display isn't big enough for 2 displays without major hassles. I think a 9" would fit just nicely (the Element with the control buttons would be a snug fit, the Axiom with touch only might take the next size up.)

Convince Me To Buy A Chartplotter!

Thankyou for comments so far. I live in Hervey Bay - there are a lot of shallow shifting sand banks - but I have a goal of sailing the Queensland Coast. I've never used a modern chartplotter/sounder/MFD. Here are some reasons why I'm thinking one of these could be useful: 1. From what I...

Tablet sorta works for me. Navionics app on phone for backup, paper charts for backup backup 😉

Convince Me To Buy A Chartplotter!

I bought a 31 footer a while ago. It has a basic Clipper Depth sounder and a non-working wind instrument. I have a Navionics Boating App subscription and a 10" Android tablet that I mount under the dodger for chartplotting (with a USB charging cable plugged in). I've been looking at replacing...
