You're absolutely right, and that's what brought me back to the no-remake camp. To still try to be fair, though, there have been great remakes. Yes, we know how and why the cycle happens - that's another thread. But there are some movies that should be immune from it and this is one. Even so...

Any time I get a "request" (ok, they used to call these "nags") from my wife the response is always "as you wish". She knows the reference too, so it works. Gets me out of doing a lot of stuff, but not always. And yes, I'm in the "no remake" camp, although if they didn't monkey with the script...
