A friend of mine has a Waszp. My hat's off to him as he seems to have the patience of Job. He spent 2 years bouncing around the bay without foiling for more than a couple of boat lengths at a time. Spent the rest of the time swimming. It was painful to watch, this coming from me, the most...
Contender is strictly a 1 person boat. The boom sweeps low over the deck so you need to duck deep. They're probably easier to sail than my RS700 as I see that they are stable at the dock. It is still a trapeze boat with a lot of sail area, so requires some degree of experience. You could...
Just bought a mast from Geoff at CL so he's still in business. He seems to be checking his CL Boatworks Facebook messenger on a regular basis, so that may be your best bet to reach him.
I am admittedly confused by some describing the need to alter the vang as a lead-in to every tack. On Contenders, some must let off the vang so that they can duck the incredible low boom. On the RS700, sailors talk of letting off the vang to prevent the leach from stalling the tack. In each...
As an aside, in response to the video, I would generally recommend mounting the board from the forward edge in order to avoid damaging the thinner trailing edge.
Cad99uk,
I know what you're saying. If the leading edge of the sail is pointed even the slightest angle away from the wind, then I do exactly as you describe by using the wind to pivot the boat. In this particular case, that method doesn't work with the leading edge to wind, as hovering the...
I use Kuny's Back Support Belt when it's bad. I avoid any heavy lifting, twisting, or bending. When my back isn't complaing, I found that hiking in modest winds strengthens my core. Planks are the best exercise for the core, but I can't stand indoor workouts.
I'm with Bruno on this. While inventiveness is great, for safety, you should stick with the tried and true. You don't want to create any new entanglement risks. With the droop harnesses that others have described, they're talking about a boat that normally does not capsize.
I already own a...
Sorry, Jim,
The video doesn't quite capture what I need to know. The RS700 is a much bigger boat, so I'll be standing on the board when the boat comes up. I can't bring it up by tugging on the centreboard like he did.
I suspect that as soon as the wind fully catches the sail, I'll need to...
The other day, I dumped my RS700 in substantial winds with the sail 45 degrees to the windwind. As soon as I got the sail above the water, the wind began forcing its way under the sail. It had the makings of a hard 180 spin and recapsize. In this case, I chickened out, turtled the rig, and...
If you ever decide to switch to a proper hiking boat, I recommend the Zhik T2 harness. While it's pricey, I needed something to cradle my back issues and support the core.
I am going to repair my carbon mast. It snapped cleanly at the gooseneck. I have ordered the necessary tube and ferrule. The ferrule will form a collar inside the old mast, connecting it to the new base tube. Has anyone attempted this repair successfully? Which type of glue should I use...
Question...
I may have stressed the mast during the capsize. You know the drill - boat goes over while you scramble over the side to the centreboard. That's 200 pounds of meat hanging off the boat as the mast and sail slap the water. That's quite the concussion for the mast. Is there a...
It's an orphan class. Not many produced. I just use it for sh1ts and giggles. Love blasting around with the spinnaker. I'll be going for the repair, and ride it until the sails are rags and the hull leaks like a sieve. Hopefully, it doesn't break on an east wind, otherwise I be drifting 70...
If there is good news to be found in all of this, it appears to be a clean break and does not involve the mast track. Should be fixable.
I also have an RS700, but wasn't going to sail it until the water warmed up, since it constantly spanks me for every mistake. So I'm getting that rigged in...
I'm going with wear n' tear. Nothing visible was obvious about the mast when I launched. I babied that beast, with fresh coats of UV inhibiting spar varnish, every year. Carefully covered it and put it away each season. Doubt that I jammed the stick in the mud, as I would have lost my tip...
Well, I'm choked. Broke my carbon mast on the weekend. Snapped at the gooseneck on my CL Stealth (similar to RS100). Was out on Saturday when the winds started gusting over 20 knots. Can't be sure, but my handheld GPS briefly recorded 21 knots of boat speed. I was having a great time. ...
I have been using an old android phone with a gps app. Able to download the gpx into some desktop software for polars and such. Phone is in a waterproof sheath. Used a handheld gps in the past until it conked out. This is working out just as well and has cost me nothing.
Got a 1 person skiff (Stealth). In winds over 10 knots, launching and landing always seems like a harrowing event. We have docks, no beach. My current strategy is tie down a wing with the kite line, and put in the boom at the last second before launch. Landing is turning into the wind...
