I haven't looked, back further, but the attrition rate in 2018 was 19/53 against 18/55 in 2022. So, this round wasn't different than the prior round. There is always an element of luck involved and surely that came into play here for some even in less obvious ways than hitting a UFO (as...
Why not look at something like a pogo 12.50 which is, in short-hand, a cruising version of a class 40? The modern class 40s
(including most of the boats that are doing the RdR) are pretty solidly incompatible with adding even the basic comfort amenities. As a benchmark, 144 has a jetboil for...
As noted above, Drheam Cup starts Sunday with 38 class 40s. Many using this as a Route du Rhum qualifier.

Many newer boats have gone to the single-spreader Axxon masts with a lower CG than the previous two-spreader mast. While those 1 spreader masts don't have a material weight difference, the increase in righting moment allows weight to come out of the keel.
Most Solents/J1s are lashed in place and have a zipper around the forestay. The forestays are incorporated into a structural furler with a swivel at the top. The J1 is not allowed a structural luff. Proper luff tension can be a challenge. I believe that a few of the newer boats may have...
Raw, unedited 2.5 min aerial video posted by Hamble Yacht Services of a righting moment test for those curious to see what this looks like.

And a video of 173 a new pogo and the latest 40 launch:
Maybe look for an older pogo 40: https://www.pogostructures.com/fiche-bateau/pogo-40/?lang=en ?
For the new boats, it is really important to get the CG low to meet the max righting moment and min weight.
a bit of clarification: Tquila (#137 and formerly Manic and prior Narcos), Croatia (#130) and Vicitan (#134) are Mach 40.2s while #145, #151 are Mach 40.3s. The latter are the same design as #153 (putting aside subsequent bow mods). In my mind, this makes Tquila's result even more...
Les Sables - Horta start this weekend with 25 boats. Despite skipping the stopover in Horta, it looks like another great race for the Class. 2540 nm.

Normandy Channel Race start this Sunday (the 30th). 5 scows (#158-162), 3 Mach 3s, 1 Lift among a really strong field of 24 class 40s. Especially among the scows, it promises to be another good street brawl as it has been called in the past. And, this time the plan is to have a TS5 cat follow...
Structural furling forestays with lashed J1s are common in Class 40 though some boats are going back to hanks and a halyard. I believe that the advantages of the structural furling vs traditional furling are weight and perhaps some simplicity. Not being able to lower the sail from the deck is...
In looking at boats, it is worth keeping in mind the recent rule changes regarding the cockpit door (in effect now), new minimum weight (in transition phase now), and increased buoyancy of 3m^2 to 5m^2 (in full force at year end 2021 though tied in with the min weight transition). In the range...
hard to tell what it would really look like in the cockpit (though there are some other drawings online), but during the last two days of the Normandy Channel Race last fall we were really wishing for that extra protection. The drawings do suggest that they might still allow pretty good...
