    We have one of these on board as well as at home: It's useful for all sorts of things besides making sure the chicken is done. Waterproof, too.

    I was actually taking the mickey, since I have a fixed (hopefully) keel. Keel up is never a good look in most cases.

    I prefer to keep the keel down in any kind of weather.

    It doesn't look like you have a lot of meat on that original mast fitting. I would be tempted to double it somehow.

    Growing up in Saskatchewan, where the temperature range is -40C to +40C, we only had single-pane windows, so every fall we had to put the storm windows on and take them off again in spring.

    Some friends of ours did their house every winter, it worked well for them. Big windows, too. It's important to make it as airtight as possible.

    In light of the "around the world in less than 35 knots" comments, I have to say that Juan de Fuca Strait to San Francisco was an enlightening first foray into open ocean sailing, only a hundred miles off the coast. Despite good weather routing, we ended up off the Oregon coast in mid-fifties...
