Can a C880 safely cross Nantucket Sound?

My boat did the same thing when the lee ama buried, slow down (stop) and sit there (stern high) until you released sheets, then it would pop back up and off you go. Only happened a few times in 12 years. Worst occasions had rookie spin sheet guy or rookie driver and mainsheet wouldn't release...

Can a C880 safely cross Nantucket Sound?

Couple things about the F242--which was my first boat. It has a short mast and is heavy for its length compared to more modern designs. You can (I did) sail with no reef in winds above 25 and gusts to 35 (of course, the courses we raced were wind-lee, so easy escapes-little reaching, if any)...

That is a well cared for F242.

Can a C880 safely cross Nantucket Sound?

Things you will learn on a beachcat that you won't use on a C880--hiking, righting the boat, launching and retrieving a spinnaker from a snuffer... Things you won't learn on a beachcat that you will need to learn to sail a C880...parking with an engine, how to use a winch, how to unfold a...

Can a C880 safely cross Nantucket Sound?

Good luck with that. Best you can hope for is an informed emotional decision. While buying a beachcat isn't a bad idea assuming it gets used to learn on...I was thinking more of crewing on a race boat (keelboat beercan series is likely the best bet since keelboats need lots of peeps to race...

Can a C880 safely cross Nantucket Sound?

Why waste time now or wait? Find a sailing venue near you. Unless you live in Death Valley or the mountains of New Mexico, it is likely that there are sailors within a couple hour drive. Only way to gain experience is to do it (whatever "it" is).

Can a C880 safely cross Nantucket Sound?

It's more of a feel for your boat and how it reacts. What works for a slow F242 is likely not applicable to a C880. Weight of the boat makes a difference, as well since a wave that might cause a F242 to slam down across the peak might not be much of a thing to a longer heavier boat. A long...

Can a C880 safely cross Nantucket Sound?

Sailing in large waves is also a bit different on a tri. Do'able but takes experience. Surfing down the face is exhilarating, being lifted by reinforced waves makes you feel on top of the world, but pushing your sprit into the backside of one is scary until you've done it a couple times (and...

Can a C880 safely cross Nantucket Sound?

I'd get a year sailing in local races before sailing a Nor'easter, just to ensure you know what to do when something goes wrong (and racing will ensure something goes wrong while you learn the boat). Big waves are fun, surfing is cool, until it's not. Here's a video of a really good race team...

Can a C880 safely cross Nantucket Sound?

Why would it not? I'd stay tied up in a Nor'easter, but it's only 30 miles end to end. I've sailed an F242 to the Farralones and back a bunch of times in big wind and waves (about 50 mile roundtrip)--and so have a lot of F27s, F28s, F25Cs, F31s, .... Fboats are built pretty robustly. Corsair...
