Went down to my boat to sail today out of Haleiwa Harbor. I noticed that the slip I've been waiting for on one of the floating docks finally came open. The temporary user's boat was sitting at a fixed dock ready to be hauled out. The harbor master previously told me to move right in as soon I...
Shrooms for my boat....a new Davey & Co mushroom vent. I will work out the exact installation spot once I'm done installing my new cowl vents & Dorade boxes later this week.
Thanks for the tips! Already bought two teak Dorade boxes. Adding lexan to the tops shouldn't be too difficult. Your mounting approach looks great! What did you use for the vent tube in the cabin top?
I spent some time working on a layout with a friend who is an incredible marine carpenter. We came up with a plan that includes two Dorade boxes, one 3" mushroom vent, and the existing solar vent in the head. The Dorade box configuration will be similar to rstone's, but the boxes will be farther...
Sure they aren't on my boat yet, but I just picked up two of these Davey & Company cowl vents for Kolibri and will be installing them soon. Pretty cool how the bronze reflects the sunset and the teak table.
Here's Kolibri's current home. People regularly anchor just inside the breakwater for a day or two so I guess Haleiwa Harbor also counts as an anchorage.
The bronze mushroom vent is pretty cool as well! I'm looking at how to improve the ventilation on my Annie as summer approaches. With the main halyard, reef lines, and staysail sheets routed to the cockpit along the starboard side there isn't quite enough room between the lines and the grab rail...
Brightwork maintenance day....grab rails. One of the few bits of brightwork that I don't freehand and actually use masking tape. Fortunately I have nice sun covers for the grab rails so I don't have to do these bits often.
Check out the Bogen Superclamp. I bought one many years ago and haven't had a chance to use it on Kolibri yet. I'll do so when I sail this Sunday and post a few pics. In the meantime check out this one from many years ago. f/11 @ 1/10 sec. Car speed was ~15 mph or ~13 knots. Canon 1Ds with a...
Getting this thread back on the first page. Sunset sail on Friday 3/3/23 had a lot of rainbows and whales. We also got completely soaked by a rain squall, but even that was fun.
Looks like she is heading more north now and has the opportunity to bend a little to the west of north if she wants. You never know, she may decide to take the Moitessier approach to racing, life, the universe, and everything.
I'm not a lefty, but I'm definitely a morning person and I love sunrises.
June sunrise at Latitude: 24° 56’ 31.032” N, Longitude: 143° 53’ 27.462” W after a night of strong winds.
A friend of mine was recently anchored just inside the breakwater in Haleiwa Harbor. He found a shopping cart attached to his anchor when he pulled it up.
Jud,
I used the SeaDog clamps that you showed and had some custom aluminum pieces made to adapt them to the rigid solar panel frames. I can't remember the dimensions of the aluminum pieces, but I can measure them in the next day or two if you want that info. I mounted the panels to the SeaDog...
I'm looking at picking up a ePropulsion Spirit outboard to push either an Achilles inflatable or a nesting dinghy. Any horror stories on ePropulsion vs Torqeedo that I should be aware of before pressing the "buy" button?
MiddayGun has it about right. Not much room to leeward, big rock not too far in front of him, high wind, broken self-steering wind vane, and only so much time before he will need some sleep. I'm hoping the best for Abhilash. He's in a tough spot.
Looks like Kirsten is set up to round the horn with a fair amount of sea room to deal with the storm. Abhilash has had good boat speed for the last few days. Hopefully he doesn't get hit hard by the storm and can continue making it an interesting race.
