Jamestown's 6-pack of 12x12 is priced reasonably, and sometimes you can find a free shipping offer. https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/product-detail/8758
I installed a B953 last season, selected because 1) I'd seen recommendations for Milltech Marine, who stocked Em-Trak units (and I was happy with their communication; I didn't really have to test their customer service, but I'd 2nd the recommendations I heard). 2) Em-Trak offered SOTDMA with...
I've always used improvised wire pullers. For 3mm (1/8"), I use wire that measures ~.035" (just something I had on-hand, but it's worked great).
For smaller Dyneema (3/32" or 1.75mm Lash-It), I've been happy with .020" piano wire (available in 10' rolls on eBay).
I tried .010", and I found...
Our C-22 has an A-frame sprit and a 278 ft^2 Cruising Code 0 on a furler. Great setup for cruising - we get to sail when we would otherwise motor.
But I wouldn't call it "Turbo" by any stretch. It's still a stern-heavy displacement hull (in my case, with a crew of 4 and all the #$*#%^ we bring...
My 14-year-old son is doing HBOT for long-COVID (fatigue, brain fog, cardiac irregularities and a host of other long-COVID symptoms). There's some research indicating HBOT might help, and a plausible pathway explaining why that might be (micro-clots in alveoli; I don't have the links handy)...
OP here. I learned a lot from this thread; thanks for all your input. My wife is grateful that I didn’t jump straight to a twin-wire skiff.
If I were ready to spend a few thousand $$, a Vago would be really high on my list. But…
Since I originally posted, our plans have changed, or at least...
Also a good idea!
For what it's worth, if I were starting over now, I'd still do A-frame sprit. But I would look at the next generation of anchors without roll bars (Rocna Vulcan, Mantus M2, etc.) And I'd try to do an anchor roller angled downward a little. That would put the anchor below the...
The sprit comes off in ~30-60 seconds with 3 pins and a snap shackle (well, if I plan ahead, I usually take 2 minutes to be careful about banging things on the gelcoat).
The aft ends of the two legs are secured by clevis pins to the fixed rod in the bow - I spliced little dyneema pulls on...

+100 on the asym! We added a bowsprit and a cruising Code 0 (on a furler) to our C-22, and absolutely love it. We sail in light winds when we'd otherwise be motoring.
A different asym cut would go deeper, but (IIUC) no asym will go dead downwind anyway. And the code with the integrated luff...
Laser Vago?
+ : 1 Trap (something we want to learn); Asym
- : Used market seems to want about the same $$ as new (~$7k or so). OK if that were to hold up and we could resell for a similar price, but it seems like the market for a class that never caught on will eventually drop.
+ / -...
@LakeBoyThanks for that clarification. I meant both (cutting from both sides AND starting in reverse).
Cut some from the outside until you can see the pilot hole, then from the inside out. And when starting (on either fiberglass face), starting in reverse seems to reduce chipping the gelcoat...
Yes, understood. And sometimes cutting backward at the start can help score the gelcoat so it doesn't splinter so much.
I have one more circular hole to go; for that, I have a good Milwaukee hole saw of the right diameter. That won't do the big rectangular hole, though. The Multimaster might be...
This seems like one of those questions that Google should be able to answer in seconds. But if so, my Google-fu is lacking today. And I’ve been showing my ignorance over on Dinghy Anarchy, so I might as well here too…
What jigsaw blade(s) or other tool options would be the best option for...
Thanks for the warning. From a cursory glance, it looks like they're mostly (or only?) available on the east coast, so not easy to try or to buy here in the PNW.
Thanks! That's one I hadn't known to look at. Added to the (growing) spreadsheet.
And thanks to all for the advice - I'm asking dumb questions and making a fool of myself, but learning a lot!
Say more on your reasoning? An FJ was low on my list, partly because I’d think I’d like to practice on a modern rig with a sprit+asym. But most of the boats the other options aren’t sprit boats either. As for speed (at least by Portsmouth numbers), a Feva rates even slower than an FJ (not sure...
